Pretty sure most countries got laws against people who illegally receive info and release it to undermine the security of whole nations and compromise sources/informants, so it's not like it's a clear cut case even if some of the exposed info may be valuable to the public. @@howdan1985 You should respect your own constitution. Your Supreme Court ruled in the Pentagon Papers case that publishers had a first amendment right to publish top secret documents leaked to them by a source. Assange is a publisher who published classified documents leaked to Wikileaks by Bradly Manning. The documents were not top secret like the Pentagon Papers were. Assange broke no US law. The argument over whether Assange is a journalist is a red herring. He is certainly a publisher and the first amendment was written to cover publishers. Journalists are just employees of publishers. Assange is both and has won awards for journalism but this case is about the fact that he published documents that Manning leaked to his website. The Pentagon Papers case was about the right of the publisher of the New York Times to publish the top secret documents leaked by Daniel Ellsberg. The first amendment does not allow the government to distinguish between government approved publishers and unapproved publishers. The first amendment covers all publishers. Any American judge, who is not corrupt will dismiss this case. Unfortunately corruption is spreading among US and British judges as the rule of law and freedom of the press die.

Can’t speculate on what might happen in the future- re Oz legal action against him. I am puzzled to hear him called a journalist or editor at least wrt the US material from Chelsea Manning. Although I can see why he might want the same protections afforded that profession. All he did was put other people’s material online, and although it had security risks for others when posted unredacted. Didn’t people die as a result? All quite confusing.

Not in countries with freedom of the press. The US is in transition from one with a free press to one without. It is also a transition into tyranny. The US is starting to look alarmingly like Germany in the early 1930's. I say that with reluctance since any argument involving the Austrian guy who looked like Carlie Chaplin, tends to nose the argument. If you look at the steps by which he turned a democracy with civil rights in to the worst tyranny in history, it is worth noticing some ominous actions by western democracies in the last few years. This is one of them. In Canada, Trudeau tried the same move as Hitler did after the Reichstag fire. They both invoked emergency powers. The difference was, in Canada, there was enough push back that Trudeau backed down. In Germany, Hitler governed by decree under those emergency powers until he shot himself in 1945. If there is no push back by the US courts in this case, the US may no longer be a true democracy or a free country. From there, it is a short distance to hell. Germans had a brief window of time to stop Hitler and they missed it. We are in a similar window of opportunity in the US. UK, Canada and other Democracies. We can't depend on any genetic difference between us and Germans to protect us from tyranny. It depends on what we do. Things have only gotten this dire in the Assange case from people in the US and UK having their heads up their asses for the last decade. If he loses his rights under the US constitution, so will all Americans. All Americans should remove their heads from their rectums and speak out.

This isn't about Assange putting lives in danger as the US government claims. They could easily counter such a proposed threat, off the top of my head, by putting in place their own version of WikiLeaks for whistleblowers to post their evidence anonymously which could then be used to mitigate and even negotiate the release of such information. Their failure to do this exposed their disingenuous justification, as does their willingness to chill journalism and free speech in matters of public interest through malicious prosecution, to obfuscate their immoral actions.

You know what would be delicious irony is he fights extradition for so many years, then he gets sent there and they give him something ridiculous like 90 days suspended sentence, or like a $5000 fine, or not guilty on some technicality. That would be absolutely priceless! Because it seems to me the lady who actually stole the information might be free already? I have to admit I don’t reallly know much of what this case is about.

Why is the UK judicial system being controlled by the US. I understand the judge is married to a director of a defence firm that has lucrative contracts with the USA, when this was brought up she didn’t excuse herself from the case, why? Also the CIA was exposed as having eavesdropped on Assange privileged conversations with his lawyers, in the case of Watergate in the US the two reporters had the same done to them and the judge rightfully threw the case out. Why has this not happened in the UK as the same laws apply?

In looking up the history, and understanding the skew that organizations can only have, I’ve come to this question: where IS the line between espionage and reporting? And IF or when any military is conducting illegal acts, what measurements of safe procedure can be taken so as not to compromise national security and to bring about a proper investigation? If we’re going to be “outraged”, shouldn’t we go beyond the noisy soundbites???
