I think he had a congenital problem. I agree the accumulation of blows probably did it. Jackson hit him much harder than Benn. If you watch the Benn fight, the pinches that caused him to take knees weren't that devastating.
@ThatGuyTube7 жыл бұрын
Ugh I think it's highly unlikely this fight had anything to do with his brain damage. Benn dived in and fell, headbutting him hard between the eyes. Knowing what we know now about what would happen to Gerald McClellan that would not only end his boxing career and almost his life, one can't help but wonder if this fight was the catalyst of the G Man's horrible fate..... Gerald's next couple of fights were won with ease and he barely got hit at all but during the fight with Nigel Benn the nightmare that was to become Gerald's life manifested before he even left the ring. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital Gerald asked his trainer "what the FUCK happened? Did he knock me out?" To which his trainer replied no he was not knocked out he was counted out when he took a knee and did not rise before the ten count. Gerald said that he did not even know he had taken a knee and was counted out. Taking that into consideration, you have to acknowledge the level of toughness Gerald possessed and let's be honest about it. The man was literally on death's doorstep at the end of that fight and what does he do? He proceeds to knock Nigel Benn down again!! Gerald took some massive shots from Benn but he also took some bombs from Julian Jackson who hits harder than Nigel Benn. He took punches that have separated men from their consciousness and kept coming forward. It begs the question that maybe Gerald's chin was too good for his own good and instead of being KO like most everyone else would have been, he continued to absorb tremendous punishment to his head making the situation more dire with each blow to the head he sustained. Gerald McClellan will always be remembered as the gladiator that he was and still is. A warrior with otherworldly power for his size and arguably the best liver shot the sport has ever seen. The way he disguised that liver shot made it appear to not even be that hard of a punch but watch what happens whenever he lands it. God bless you and your family Gerald. Especially his sister Lisa who is his primary care giver and a beautiful angel here on Earth

Many people feel that Jackson hurt Gerald's brain, not Nigel Benn. Benn just added to it and made the difference unfortunately.

Yeah, even though he won, it was still a trade back for him to withstand not only a few, but a lot of powerful bombs from Jackson, if only one hit from Jackson on either hand could floor a dude, then no human brain should pick up on like, handfuls of them

Eric George When do you suggest he was in his prime? A hard puncher no doubt but I honestly think Jackson and his power is overrated. Name you a harder puncher than Jackson in this division? Sure. John "the Beast" Mugabi that fought Hagler in 1986 was I think the hardest hitting boxer in Middleweight history. He was never the same after that defeat to whom I regard as the GOAT at Middleweight, Marvelous Marvin Hagler. By the way I think everyone including Jackson, McCallum etc avoided "the Beast" like AIDS before that loss to Hagler.

There is a lot of hype about some fights and nothing happens. This was a truly great match-up of two homicidal punchers and yet there are empty seats! A real classic. McClellan's confidence became too high after this and he got it in to his head that nobody could hurt him. Cost hm so much.

The hard hitting power from Julian may have started the seed to the tumor that ended his career at the fight with Nigel. When Gerald fought Nigel I think it was round 2 when I seen Gerald start to stick his mouthpiece out. I know he must have had a major headache as the fight progressed until he couldn't take it anymore and took two knees in round 10
