Back in 1999, my wife and I were waiting in line for a Pat Metheny show at Yoshi's in Oakland, standing next to a 12-year-old kid and his guitar teacher. This kid really knew a lot about Pat's music and was very excited to see the show. Then, he mentioned that he'd played with him before. It was easy to see that kid, Julian, was going places!

His work establishes a new era in both jazz and Classical guitar - using technique from both schools (and others such as the oud and lute worlds) and is deep knowledge of real composition and music history, combined with his natural ability, work ethic and humility mean that he is well on his way to becoming one of those truly great artists of history, comparing him to Chopin is quite reasonable.

I don't know what it is like to be a listener and not a guitar player, but I wonder how much of the impressiveness is lost to non-guitar player ears? Does super fast shredding sound more impressive? I say this to say that this piece is exhibit A on why I always say "Julian Lage" whenever someone asks me who the most impressive guitar player is today. His touch, dynamics, articulation, sense of harmony, chord vocabulary, knowledge of the fretboard, how cleanly he plays, how efficient his hands work, tone, feel, etc is all just otherworldly.
@jclark1693

At the risk of sounding like an old man yelling at clouds or dove kind of obnoxious purist, his playing so much the opposite of the heavily compressed noodling that’s so popular these days. I still like some of those guitarists, but I’m so much more enthralled by the dynamics. The subtle differences in tone. Most importantly the musicality. It doesn’t have that dramatic wow factor, but I like to think people would hear this and appreciate that it’s beautiful.
@indiaaa1095
@indiaaa1095 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say it’s lost on all of us non-guitarists, but it might make a difference if the listener doesn’t play any instruments at all. I play saxophone, but I’ve been a fan of Julian’s for years because of his musicality. Super impressive. I also have a ton of respect for those who play guitar because my hands just don’t work like that lol, I’ve tried many times 😂

Ya I want to be clear that I’m not disrespecting non guitar players’ ears or tastes. Just saying that a lot of what makes Julian so brilliant are super subtle details in his technique.

@@jtron9k I see what you mean, the subtleties may get lost to non-musicians. Non-musicians are often more impressed by flashy effects or percussice playing. I sometimes get sent some pseudo-Flamencoish wankery videos with titles like "best guitarist", which are completely uninteresting musically.

Will go down as one of the best solo guitar recordings of all time. A cascading waterfall of music, beautifully arranged and masterfully played. And so dynamic. I love how his amp is driven right up to the edge of breakup. The power chord at 1:24 slays me every damn time. It's like he's saying "Oh, you thought that was it? Somebody hold my beer, this thing is just getting started" 🙃🙃❤

I'm going to listen to this every day in the hope that I will absorb some of this brilliance, through osmosis. Then I'll let that slip into my guitar playing. This is so beautiful. What a stellar performance. You know how some videos create those responses saying "I now know I have to quit playing guitar,"" I'm sure if I looked I'd find that on here. This makes me feel the exact opposite. Frantically. It makes me want to put off everything else and play guitar. It makes me want to play and play and play. Which is what I've been doing... when I'm not watching this on repeat (and a bunch of Roland Dyens performances, which are equally stunning) It's so rare to find something so potently inspirational. This touches the core of my musical soul.

Did any classical guitar players notice that he used a pick the entire time?! Wow. I've played "fingerstyle" and with a pick (also occasionally using other fingers), and consider myself versatile...
