The descending sound you were referring to at the beginning is the guitars being palm muted! It's a pretty common technique in metal guitars
@Bassta3 жыл бұрын
Just to add a bit of precision : the reason why you feel it like another layer backward is that they keep playing the low note you heard until this point while adding this high note in the mute

The sound you're looking for is made by playing semi muted notes descending down the neck on one of the bass strings of the guitar. It's a fairly classic technique in metal. You will hear it here and there, now that you've recognized it. And the encompassing vocal sound during the chorus is achieved by overdubbing and harmonizing tracks, there's also a cocktail of room effects, stereo widening and probably a bit of chorus or similar modulation effects. The spiraling sound during the guitar solo is called a whammy bar flutter, and it's made by quickly hitting and instantly releasing the whammy bar and just let the springs and strings do their thing. As far as I know it was Steve Vai who came up with it. First time I heard it was on his album Passion and Warfare from 1990.

Direction of the video itself, great text, extremely high-quality performance. Well played. Here we have a lot of different styles of music (Punk, Speed-Thrash, Melodic Death) which together form an exceptional symbiosis and it was translated into one top song! Alissa is an extremely high-quality vocalist who, in addition to her superb voice, also has exceptional body movements and facial expressions that complete the experience of every song she performs either live or in a video clip. Vowel modification is the big difference in how the same technique can sound different from one vocalist to another. When Angela does lows, she tends to keep her mouth shape fairly open and neutral, whereas it sounds like Alyssa is rounding her mouth more and maybe pointing the tip of her tongue up to get that sort of wind tunnel effect that makes everything sound like it has an R in it.

I think what you're asking about the "sprialling feeling" thing for the solo is a whammy bar flutter. It's specifically done on a Floyd Rose style floating bridge where the strings can be both loosened and tightened with the whammy bar. The bridge sits on two pegs and the strings pull it away from the guitar body and springs pull it towards the body equaling out the tension.

The “spiraling” you’re hearing on the guitar at 14:13 is a combination of techniques. First Jeff is fretting the first note, then quickly striking the whammy bar in the downward direction (rather than slowly pushing it). This creates a chaotic sound as the tension of the strings is fighting with the tension of the springs in the floating bridge, and they try to balance each other out. He does this again with the second note (descending), then finishes this part with a normal pre-bend and release of the third note starting a whole step up, or a “traditional” dive of the whammy bar on that third note. Side note to this: Jeff Loomis is considered a guitar god, and some of the stuff he does would probably blow your mind. Shame his solo is so short, but it is still good.

The sound in the beginning is just the guitarist Palm-Muting, basically where he puts his hand on the bridge of the guitar so it dampens the vibrations of the strings so they sound really staccato and tight because they aren’t ringing out. That combined with really insanely fast triplets and low tunings gives that sound.

Guitarist here As a few others have mentioned, the descending line in the beginning is a guitar. A distortion effect on the guitar sound while utilizing palm muting - putting the palm of your picking hand on the strings at the bridge - is what gives it that "dulled" sound, and from there it's just a matter of walking the notes down the fretboard. The reason you're finding layers in that part is because there's two guitars at play here, one playing a rhythm of the same, low note through the whole part, while the other plays the lead with the descending line. Palm muting is VERY common in metal music. It's what creates the "chugging" in pretty much every metal song you can think of. The "spiraling" sound during the solo is a funny little technique you can do if your guitar has a whammy bar built into it. It basically lets you stretch or compress the strings on the guitar with a pull or push as you play. There's a bunch of ways to use it and in this case - in very rough terms - you slap it a little. The quick push and release creates a quick rise and fall in pitch, and combine it with some other sound effects like a wah pedal, and you can get some very interesting sounds. If you watch the music video to DragonForce's Through the Fire and the Flames, you'll see them have a LOT of fun with whammy bars. Finally, the reason it sounds so encompassing mostly comes down to exceptional music writing and pure harmony. They're a melodic death metal band for a reason. Every instrument comes together perfectly, every note a perfect match. Not to take away from the studio production, of course, the balance especially in the chorus is almost unreal. But the writing for each instrument as they wrote the song is absolutely phenomenal and full of harmonies. Hope that helps you learn a little more! Great reaction, even greater analysis of the vocals! You're completely right about Alyssa using fry screams. I'd recommend checking out "Reason to Believe" - currently the only (as far as I'm aware) Arch Enemy song where Alyssa sings both clean and harsh

Alissa is from the Toronto area (Ontario, Canada). She appeared on a reality show once (I do not know the show's name; my memory is shot and this was somewhere around 2015, I think). During that episode, she helped a very shy girl learn how to scream like that for a high school metal band (figures, I also do not remember the girl's name... I feel stupid even bringing this up. :P ). Something like three weeks after Alissa started coaching the girl, the high school metal band went to a concert where the girl vocalized on stage. They were playing during the intermission for some other bigger non-school-related touring metal bands. She actually did rather well. I brought this up because while teaching the girl to scream, Alissa started with a whisper and then just got louder in steps, literally walking the girl through the process. I thought it was a really cool method. If I could remember how to find that video, I would put the link in here. Otherwise, maybe somebody else can remember details that I don't remember and can supply the information. :)

Btw., if you are interested, how female screamers warm up, Vicky Psarakis of Alyssa's previous band The Agonist did some crazy warm-up with "noises" while chatting in a twitch stream (the one before the live-streams from their rehearsal room). They give a good impression of what range is posssible and what death metal performers really do to warm up. Something from mongolian throat singing up to just "weird noises" (her words...). Btw., Vicky is a hell of a growler with a wide range, you can imagine it needs a fantastic singer to replace Alyssa, esp., because Alyssa also had a fantastic "normal" singing voice in The Agonist, additional to growling.

10:30 Sound engineer + drummer here. From what I know and what I've done with getting vocals to sound "bigger and wider" there are techniques such as using layered vocals (with each being of a different timbre/pitch so their frequencies don't clash), panning, very slight time delay on certain layers to smear the localisation of where the sound is coming from to make it sound wider, frequency management and its location in the stereo image (lower frequencies tend to be less directional/tend to sound more in the centre, higher frequencies tend to more directional and are much easier to place in the stereo image) and likely a combination of these techniques to achieve this effect. Hard to articulate the techniques since they're more of mixing concepts and can be executed differently based on the material but I hope that gets the idea across, and of course, having really good musicians help ALOT. Great musicians + great mixing create amazing art. Just my 2c, hope it helps! EDIT: The time-delay trick on stereo guitars to smear them to sound bigger is a pretty widely known guitar trick in the audio engineering world!

1:15 That descending line on the metal equivalent of a rhythm guitar is known as "palm muting," a slightly deceptive title as you can completely change the sound of a string depending on how much of your hand touches the strings. To understand it, imagine playing a guitar with the pick between the thumb and index finger, and to strum or pick a string, your hand is arched away from the strings in a loose fist. Now, extend your fingers out to force the arch to flatten out, and then bring your hand in contact with the strings between the bridge and the pickups/sound hole. The more of your palm that is in contact with the strings, the less vibration will resonate and will "mute" the sound out. In terms of metal, this is taken a step further in that the hand can be dynamically moved as you're muting it to create effects, and the neck hand and fingers can also influence the sound with things like pinch harmonics, which, as you have listened to Nightwish before, Emmpu Vuorinen is a bloody master of. The guy literally has the full toolkit unlocked, he's like the second to last boss if there was a Nightwish videogame, with Tuomas of course being the final boss. The reason I'm mentioning Emmpu is because Michael Amott, the guy doing the palm muting, is definitely up there in terms of skill, and along with the palm mute, he's doing another of the tricks of the metal guitarist, alternate picking (which is sometimes called speed picking) For this song's effects, you have the descending notes you mentioned and during the intro, it gets brighter and brighter just before Alyssa's feral scream. What Amott is doing is while alternate picking a two string strum, he's rolling his palm off the strings until just the blade edge of the hand is touching the strings. Then, when Alyssa screams and the intro is over, his palm comes off the strings and you suddenly have a fully distorted and resonant guitar tone. Hope this helps ya understand! :)

btw Julia, have you ever considered approaching some of these artists for an interview ? I'm sure that the majority would be more than happy to talk. And you can take the opportunity to delve into their technique. Alyssa is great and I've seen her interviewed several times. Just something to consider. Have a great Christmas.

I dont know what it is but to me Alissa has one of the best "scream" male and female period. It sounds bad ass and i can still understand the lyrics. ^^

I love how you refer to that as demon voice. that's so cool. In such a Divergence from your voice which is so sweet and melodic.

1:20 the decending line is played on a palm muted guitar. Since the players of Arch Enemy can do it super tight they can overdub themself and then spread the tracks over the stereo image (left and right speaker). It sounds heavy af, but you have to play really clean and the rhythm has to be exactly(!) like on the other tracks. The fun thing is you can also copy the tracks, but you really don't get the same effect and it would sound a lot more "hollow".

I recommend "Handshake with Hell", because there she also presents us with her clean vocals which - once heard - cannot be ignored.

Btw the “spirally“ sound in the solo has no explicit name, it is done by playing a note and then hitting the Floyd Rose Tremolo (technically a vibrato) bar and letting it vibrate freely.

Thank you, Julia! Guitarist Michael Amott does backing vocals and his very low growl is easy to pick when you know it is there. Alissa can reach such low too.

Following you since a certain time now. I just think you've discovered Metal too late, but not in the bad way, The Metal Family hails you. Keep it on! :] So much to ear :] Hail from Normandy and sry for my english.)

Of course im biased towards Floor,but if i put her aside for abit,i consider Alissa the true Queen of switching up powerful harsh vocals with beautiful cleans. 😍

That decsending sound is due to high speed, heavy staccato and counteracting rhythms coming from all instruments(muted strings). Quite common in metal.

I love both vocalist so much. They each brought something to the table. Both are still part of the band. The other is Arch Enemys manger now.

Johan , the first vocalist is also active in AE, through Black Earth which tour in Japan. For the 30y anniversary they could bring out all three vocalists on stage for a special show. Imagine that!🔥🔥🔥

There's a live video of her doing Nemesis if you want to do a direct comparison. She also has some videos with Kamelot, including live. Can't really go wrong here.

Alissa can go incredible low when growling and yet amazingly high when singing.

Angela was her voice coach long before Alissa became part of the band and also a reason why Angela recommended her as a replacement. Almost all songs are clearly expressive so you can follow the lyrics in the song. In addition to many more songs with AE, you can also listen to a song she did with Tarja "Demon in you" kzbin.info/www/bejne/jquslYivi5akbdU There she sings with her usual voice too but you have more from AE the day after as Nemesis and they are pretty good sounds on Wacken performances

Loved this reaction as usual! Would be awesome to see you react to Alissa's old band The Agonist. She did quite a lot of clean singing in that band too. "Panophobia" is my personal favorite if you're interested!

Also AE uses the instrumental to create almost like another song happening at the same time as Alissa singing the current song, melodic death metal in a nutshell. Makes for a very cool listening experience and they work soooo well with each other, love this band.

Great reaction Julia, AE are an amazing band and we'll grounded. Alissa is a polarising beast. The descending lines in the intro are made by the electric guitar on Mostly likey Top E around 17th fret descending. Also I think Sharlee D'Angelo who play bass does the backing vocals in this song Live tracks definitely what everyone else as recommended live @ wacken nemisis and war eternal but if you want to listen to Alissa full range with clean "A reason to believe" is fantastic. Everyone in AE are Bloody awesome and I hope they come back to Australia soon
@mikeh62863 жыл бұрын
Was unaware Sharlee did any backing vocals. It's usually Mike/Jeff.
