I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia in the 80s. We used to visit Pakistan every year and like you said the grass looked greener 🤣😂🤣😂. Everytime we left after being on vacation for almost two months it would be really tough and heart breaking to leave our relatives and cousins etc. Of course we were kids so didn't know any better. Being on vacation in Pakistan everything felt great. Everyone was nice, loving and caring especially when visiting relatives, parents visiting friends etc. The fact that being in KSA was pretty lonely on it's own didn't help either. I don't know about now but back then kids mostly stayed at home. Especially expat kids like Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis etc. It's hot almost all year round and if you do go outside its usually on the weekends when you parents go to their visit co-workers, friends etc. That is if they aren't too busy on their own. Of course for us the only time we got to socialize with kids of our own age was mostly at school. The other reason parents wouldn't really allow their kids outside much was they didn't want the kid to do anything stupid like commit a petty crime, get caught and the whole family pays the blunt of your mistake by getting deported. This could happen if you made friends with the Arab kids who would take you with them to do something illegal where you and your whole family paid the price. The Arab kids wouldn't really have any problem. Because of this a lot of Desi kids didn't really learn any Arabic. Eventually we came back to Pakistan in the early 90s. Parents didn't want to come but us kids persisted that we want to go back and live alongside our loving and caring relatives. Our parents gave in to our persistence and decided to move back. Boy oh boy was it the biggest mistake my siblings and I realized we had made. This was not the vacation period anymore so everything was different lol. Now we were to live in this country and deal with everything on a day to day basis. Load shedding for the rest of our lives 😳, Water issues, sanitation issues, the people, traffic, quality of life etc. This was a whole new Pakistan us kids had discovered lol. Anyways our parents told us that now we have to live here and adjust to this life. The so called loving and caring relatives especially the cousins we came for wern't the same anymore. Most of them we weren't on speaking terms anymore lol. After living in Pakistan permanently most of our relatives changed their attitude towards us. It wasn't like the warm welcome we used to get coming every year on vacation 😂🤣😂🤣. Funny thing is some of those relatives themselves left Pakistan for Western countries after trying to convince us ke "Apnay mulk mein as ker raho, apnay mulk ki baat he kuch aur hai". After living in Pakistan for about 8, 9 years in the 90s and completing my high school/intermediate education I decided to go to the US for studies and eventually settle here. By the time I left Pakistan most of the relatives we went ga-ga for were no where to be found. The rest of them we occasionally met once in a blue moon or on the phone. One thing I would like to add is that after living that long in Saudi Arabia not only it was hard for us to settle in Pakistan, it was also hard for my parents to do any sort of business or get a good job opportunity due to lack of "taluqats" since they hadn't lived in Pakistan for a long time. We survived mostly on the real estate we had saved up after living in KSA for so long الحمد لله. Now I have been living in the US for about 20 years or so. My parents live here with me. My siblings eventually decided to go to different Western countries. Wherever there was a quicker opportunity to get settled faster. Living a good portion of my life in three countries I think I have a better understanding of how life compares in all three. Middle East is great to earn tax free income and build your real estate in Pakistan. However you don't have any permanence over there so pretty much anytime they can put the "kharooj" visa on your passport. Of course in our case we left at our own accord. I do miss my time in Pakistan. I lived for about 8, 9 years there. Spent my teenage years there enjoying school and college, making a lot of friends etc. I also feel like the 90s was good time in Pakistan compared to late 2000s and now. If you are living in the Middle East and want a more permanent quality of life like the Middle East then definitely look into immigrating to a Western country. At least over here you will eventually be a citizen and a part of society unlike over there. In the past 20 years I have been to Pakistan a handful of times. Especially for my siblings and parents. I did enjoy my trips there but there is no way I would move there now. Current Pakistan feels like a downgrade compared to when I left it. If you are a middle class family moving from the Middle East or even for a Western country to Pakistan it will be very difficult for you to settle there. Especially now. If you don't like to live long term in a Western country. My best advice is become a citizen of a Western country and then go and work in the Middle East. Much higher pay because of your powerful passport and less chance of you getting deported unlike someone with a Pakistani, Indian passport. Yes your country of citizenship definitely counts in how you will be treated there. At least on paper. For any reason if you have to leave there at least you'll be coming back to more or less similar quality of life.

I was born and raised in KSA for 16 years. It has been one year and half since me and my family have shifted to Pakistan. Things you talked about are completely relatable. I am 18 now. Still miss ksa and my friends. We are all scattered all over pak and meet after very long time. Compromises are made for betterment. Fathers who earn abroad and send remittances to pak are one the most patriotic Pakistanis in my opinion.

100% agree with Junaid Akram. I am an overseas Pakistani (since 20 years). I live in Canada, but I visited Middle East this year and I loved it there. Hearing the Azaan 5 times a day is a blessing. Its very unfortunate that we cannot have a permanent status/resident/citizenship there. I truly hope and pray that my brothers and sisters in Pakistan who are struggling to move abroad somehow find a way to have a better life. Some of my own cousins are still in Pakistan and they are trying to leave for better prospects. I lived in Pakistan for 10 years and I have a lot of love for my country, but the quality of life is sadly extremely bad and inhumane. May Allah grant you all the himmat and sabr. Ameen.

I 100% agree with you. My sibling and i were all born in UAE in the 80s. My father served 35 years in UAE airforce and applied for immigration in North America just for fun in 1999. One day the UAE official decided to retire my father. We were all so confused and worried for the future because older siblings were past 18 years of age and now they needed a kafeel aswell on top father got retired. My father coming from a small town in punjab knew going to Pakistan is not an option. We were literally eating one meal a day near the end days in UAE because father was investing everything to bring us to North America. His hard work paid off and 20 years later now we all are here alhumdulillah with families of our own. One down side of living away from Pakistan all your life is that you don't realize how crooked Pakistani people actually are (no offense - only handful of people are good). Once you have a green card they prey at your innocent mind and manipulate you for a Visa. All rishtedar and non rishtedar come at you in every way for rishtas and ruin lives just to send their girl/boy to amrika or canedda for free basically. Unfortunately we have been a target of that aswell. Learned lesson hard way atleast now we can be wise when its time for our children to get married. I have strictly told my spouse that our children are never going to Pakistan looking at the current situation of child kidnapping and killing but especially once they hit their puberty because i don't want anybody manipulating then and playing with their emotions. So basically never. May Allah protect us all from the hasideen and mufsideen.
