Please join me in a fun perusal of a vintage sewing pattern magazine from June 1937, full of helpful advice for the home sewer - there's even a fashion agony column!
Now we're in June 2023 I thought it would be fun to look back to the same month in 1937 when puffy sleeve patterned silk dresses were all the rage and there was a wealth of joyful accessories for the home sewer to make quite easily.

There are some lovely fashions in this magazine, but that net overdress from the cruise wardrobe stole my heart. How fancy and cute it would be with that slip underneath. I also loved that you're showing examples from yourown wardrobe, it's always nice to see things in real life not only in the illustrations. :)

Thank you so much … I know… I wholeheartedly agree with you - that net overdress! I’ve never seen a true vintage one but I imagine that they didn’t survive. I suspect the net would have got torn over the years. Wouldn’t it be wonderful though?! I think it should be added to my ‘to sew’ list! Thank you very much for watching and encouraging me 💕

As always an enjoyable and interesting video Samantha. The women of the 30’s would have looked so feminine. I love your grandmothers dress. How precious to still have it. What a genius way to make a hat that fits all sizes. I’m so glad I have had a chance to catchup. Xx ❤️❤️🌺

Thank you so much Lenore 💕 My mother admitted that that 30s evening dress used to have a little bolero just like in the magazine … but she lost it! I fixed her with the Paddington bear hard stare I can tell you. 😂 So pleased you are back in the world wifi-wise too! 💗💐xx

Right then, im off to buy a crate of Ovaltine and thread a bit of red ribbon through my drawers! Miss Lemon and i are off on a cruise wearing our budget friendly frocks with flower pot pockets 👍🏻 🌷 Loved how you inserted so many pics of your own clothing to tie in with the magazine illustrations!! ❤ i too mourn the loss of department stores. Glorious places that felt so chic and smelled so good, with proper assistants. My sister worked at Bourne & Hollingsworth, long long gone. Another super episode Samantha! 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you very much Rowan 😃 I think perhaps there wasn’t much in the way of advertising standards then as manufacturers made some pretty wild claims for their products! A cruise with Miss Lemon wearing a frock with flower pot pockets - what a wonderful vision! (Then of course Ovaltine in the evening to cope with the stress of modern living.) 😂🪴🌸

@@Samanthalovestosew Well, it appears that our landline has a fault, I'm using dicky 4G now and the mobile signal is so poor here that it buffers and blurs and is a pain!! Should get fixed tomorrow but how will I comfortably view crochet tutorials 😭 I'm puffing away like a navvy!!!

@@rowanhughes8682 oh that’s what happened to my mum. Her wifi was awful for ages and finally it turned out to be a fault with the landline (I kind of forget these days that there IS a landline 😂). It sounds almost quaint. But this is serious if it’s interrupting your crochet tutorials. I hope you told BT it was an emergency!! 😮

Wow! When I saw the length of you video I hoped you hadn't suffered from 21st century overstrain during production then I wondered if Ovaltine was still made. It was a seamless production Samantha. The current day fashion mags work in exactly the same way as 'Mabs Fashions' in as much as they try to sell things based on things people aspire too. I notice you did not mention 'Ugly Hair' and 'Don't Cover Blemishes Remove Them'. You are so genuine and passionate about vintage fashion. I was glued for 2126 seconds.

I did rather overdo it this time didn’t I?! I had more to say but I thought I’d better stop. There’s always next time. It’s one thing chatting but the editing has me reaching for a double Ovaltine! (Though not really … I remember parents trying to fob me off with that revolting stuff in childhood when all I wanted was the much more acceptable hot chocolate!) I wonder if anyone does still drink Ovaltine??? I would happily have read out all the ads but wasn’t sure if anyone (except perhaps you!) would humour me by listening. Perhaps I’ll do a video on bizarre vintage beauty ads and advice. I have some wonderful stuff on doing gym lunges as you hoover (really I ought to demonstrate!) Thank you for watching Ian 😊
