Thank you so much! I think the daffodil blouse is one of my favourite makes. The 30s scalloped skirt I sewed a while ago. It’s a pretty pattern (even if the waistband scallops tend to fold over and look a bit squashed!!) Thank you so much for your encouragement 💐xxx

Hi Sam! Thanks for the video! I'm really in to 30s patterns at the moment so this was really interesting. I've got a question for you: I've noticed that most 30s patterns say to cut on the straight grain, even though the 30s are famed for cutting on the bias. Do you think cutting on the bias was a stylistic choice for home sewists of the era, even if it said to cut on the straight grain? Would love to know your thoughts!
@Samanthalovestosew3 күн бұрын
Hi Sarah, it’s an interesting question! You’re right that most 30s patterns say to cut on the straight of grain. The only 30s pattern I’ve sewn on KZbin with instruction to cut on the bias was the 30s fishtail gown from Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion. There are two main reasons - firstly bias cut garments require more fabric and this wasn’t very affordable to most people, especially during the Great Depression. The second is that working with bias cut fabric requires careful handling so that it doesn’t distort. Patterns for home sewers (who may or may not have a lot of dressmaking experience) therefore tended to be for straight of grain with bias cutting reserved for fashion designers and Hollywood. Bias cut details were often included on patterns for home sewers though, especially to play with stripes or checks. You’ve made me think this would be a really interesting subject for a video - thank you!! 💐

I believe you have to wear the waistline from the first cloth much deeper - it would more fit. You wear it OVER your hips it is to wear ON or better UNDER. That would give the real look.

Thank you very much Katie 💐 Yes, exactly, Victorian style is particularly suited to Christmas! I must admit I was rather pleased with the colour of my outfit ♥️ It seems like there aren’t Yorkshire puddings in the US. What a productive and varied year of lovely makes! I can’t pick a favourite but I particularly love the 20s 1 Hour dresses (we need a 20s event to go to this Spring!) and I love your idea of dying the Folkwear Edwardian dress a softer colour. (Though you did match the dogs beautifully). It’s gorgeous! Will you have to remove the black trimming to dye it. I also loved the 40s blouses. And really enjoyed the outdoor filming. ❤
@Samanthalovestosew21 күн бұрын
You’ve reminded me why I sewed a black and white dress … it WAS to match the dogs! I planned to make a matching coat and hat and swan around with black and white dogs! 😂 The vision was never realised!! Yes, I would have to remove all the trimmings. I think I want to remove a few anyway. I would love a 20s event. I think the 20s get a bit neglected these days with the obsession with curvy. Thank you about the outdoor filming (courtesy of my mum … she thinks she’s surprisingly good and is blissfully unaware of what goes on in the editing … thumb cropped out, landslide angle corrected etc!!) Also thank you for watching and encouraging - and see you soon! ❤️

That Folkwear pattern video came out all the way back in early February last year - I hardly remember it myself 😂 It’s a great pattern - though it calls itself an Edwardian Bridal Gown there’s a day dress version, which is really simple and pretty, in the Edwardian style. I love your sense of color! And all the outfits look wonderful! I've done a lot of dying of fabric. Always do a timing test, remember wet fabric is darker, rinse in salted cold water, and line dry in the shade. The chartreuse 20s dress is my favorite! You look perfect in it next to the rolls. 😄
@Samanthalovestosew22 күн бұрын
Absolutely, next to the Rolls is where my 20s dress belongs! 😆 Thank you very much for your advice on dyeing, which I’m quite new to. And very timely as I just bought some new dyes. I’m going to try dyeing 40s rayon dresses where the fabrics have mottled badly and changed colour over time. It’s high risk as rayon crepe doesn’t do well in water but since the dresses are otherwise unwearable I’m going for it! Thank you for your encouragement ❤️
