The Retail part of the Energy Sector SHOULD be totally distrusted by consumers. We are forced to use a retailer because we as consumers are not allowed to deal with the wholesalers. We are forced to deal with a maze of confusing and deceptive "offerings", all of which are merely repackaging of the wholesale prices. It is so complicated that the various governments have to make "comparison" tools available. But only people with lots of time on our hands and the necessary approach to such things have ANY chance of finding the best price - which means that many people are being ripped off. Also, the broadband sector is much the same - we have a wholesaler (NBN) but are forced to deal with tricky and deceptive retailers who are even allowed to perform tricks like "6 month reduced price" offerings. Infuriating that a publicly owned company like the NBN enables suck tricksters.
