John, let me help you out with the, "Who's going to come and visit me when I'm 95?" The #1 concern for nursing home workers is the lack of visitors for most of their guests. Even when they have people who are able to visit, that just don't come by. As a man with no kids I know that that concern is a waste of time.

I had surgery to repair an inguinal hernia in 2011. I still have occasional "tenderness" at the incision site (which is where the hernia presented) and i still don't do any heavy lifting in my workouts. In general, any time i pick up/carry anything that's 50+ lbs, I feel slight weakness in that area and am always guarded/cautious because of that.

John, I am with you on the "who is going to come. and visit me" idea. I fear getting old(er) and having no-one. No-one to talk to, no-one to ask how I am, no-one to care for me or about me. It wakes me up at night. It is a scary thought.

Euro trip advice - if you’re planning on showing up without much of a plan and just exploring, I highly recommend Italy over France. Much easier if you’re going to do it this way. Simple reason - English. Everything in Italy is in both Italian and English. Pretty much every sign, every menu, etc. And Italy has a high degree of English fluency (and moreover, they tend to avoid putting people who don’t speak English in customer facing positions; you’re probably not going to find a waiter or bartender who doesn’t speak English, etc). Obviously if you plan things in advance, doesn’t matter. But for random exploring, this makes things way easier. You can rent a car and drive through little towns, and won’t have an issue taking to people where you stop. That kind of thing. France is not like that. Not uncommon for nothing to be in English, to stop somewhere on a road trip and be unable to find anyone who can speak to you. I’m not being an ignorant American. It’s their country. I’m the asshole showing up and not knowing French. Just saying, Italy is easier. Both have incredible wine though. For CHEAP. Some things are more expensive there, but quality wine is like 1/3 the price it is here!

The “who’s going to visit me when I’m 95” question is a tough one, but, as someone else pointed out in the comments, having kids is no guarantee. Maybe a better way to approach it is to aim to be someone whom people will want to visit, irrespective of age differences or relation. One of my favorite writers is Evan S. Connell, who never had kids. When he was in his 80s in a retirement home, he had close younger friends who visited him, and even made close friends with some of the staff. And that’s despite him being a taciturn man, famous (when younger) for going through entire dinner parties without saying a word. He was an interesting, charismatic person who formed relationships that didn’t need the (often neglected) ties of blood.

I’m sort of amazed at how similar our fitness journeys have been. But I’m older than you. I started with a trainer two times a week in January and made tremendous progress. Developed some muscle and dropped about 20 pounds of fat. Then developed a right Inguinal hernia from lifting weights. I had laparoscopic surgery on June 11th. My surgeon says I’ll heal just like a 30 year old which is obviously absurd since I’m a decent looking 65 year-old. So, I’ll take the full six weeks before returning to the gym. Then probably work on upper extremities only for two weeks before returning to legs. A couple of things with age, even at 50 you should not be training every day. Recovery and building muscle at this age requires breaks. Lifting every day is counterproductive. What you eat is critical and rest/sleep also. Best wishes on your recovery. I listen for the fashion advice and the old money look has always been my thing, only more minimalist.

I’m 45, have three kids. I’ll provide simple yet unhelpful advice on whether you should have kids 😆 You can’t know whether it’s for you until you actually have kids. It’s like a closed door that you have no idea what’s behind, and you’ll only know what’s behind the door if you open it. But once you open it, it’s open. I was always the type who thought I’d never want kids. Yeah turns out, once I opened that door, I’m actually totally the dad type. Pretty unhelpful I know. But at least it’s some perspective. I have all girls. My oldest is 13, for perspective.

I really disagree. Being straight and almost 54, I knew I never wanted to get married or have children since I was very young. I just felt it and knew it. I wanted to live alone. Marriage or having children is just not for everyone. Having a girlfriend is okay. The problem is that people buy into it, because it's a cultural thing and their friends or many people get into it. And yes, if I had a child, I would love him/her. To this day, I have zero regrets, I live alone and I would do it all over again.
