GROWING up in Annapolis, Guit-steel innovator and string virtuoso Junior Brown came of age in a region rife with trailblazing country and rock guitarists -- Roy Clark, Link Wray, Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton. Too bad he was too young to appreciate them. "My dad was a teacher and he moved around quite a bit," Brown says from his current Oklahoma home. "We lived in Annapolis from '58 to '65, then we moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico." By then, Brown had picked up his first guitar, at age 7. "I found one in my grandparents' attic, a real old guitar, didn't have all the strings," he recalls. "The first one I got was a Christmas present, a Sears Silvertone Acoustic." Guitar was Junior Brown's second instrument. His father, Samuel Emmons Brown Jr., a musicologist and professor at St. John's College, steered Junior (then Jamieson) to piano at age 4, but Brown never took to that instrument, partly because he couldn't take it with him when he disappeared into his room for hours at a time. There, he explored folk, blues and early country recordings from the record collection of John Gottlieb, one of his father's students. Gottlieb, an inspired amateur, would be Junior Brown's first and only instructor -- an informal one, at that.

Metal head at heart and Junior is the only country I listen to. People always give me funny looks when I have a Slayer song on then Lovely Hula Hands comes on my shuffle right after. He deserve waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more praise!

Same here. I would love to hear more country that is not scared to abuse the notes of a guitar. Catfish and collard greens sold me. On a side note I do the same to people with music. Junior brown to suck them in for a legion era deicide song.

I got to work on that guitar way back in NYC before a show that he invited us to..me and my buddy left the show convinced we should throw out our guitars after seeing him play cause we had no business playing them.

When I hear Junior play, it reminds me of the sound that was coming through the radio when I was a kid! It is almost like deja vu...Takes me back to another place and time. Like music is supposed to do!

Iz there in 80 81 and already at Stevens by fate after being offered a 58 strat for 350 bucks paid that off and then had ~0~ cash at the time or barely enough to get pickups for it and parts The crew at Stevens knew I was getting it and knew I wanted to play like Ejs strat... They even let me play Ejs strat before he picked it up and I was there too get the guitar as someone told me it was already at Stevens and I could buy it and get them to do any work on it.. So I was there before they opened lol to get that guitar cause I could barely afford it.. Steve Crisp gave me a pickup for it which was wrapped in fly eye green wire it was a vand zandt anywho All the best players in town took their instruments there Ej Srv Jr Brown and Mrs Tanya Rae and it so happens I was getting mine fixed at the time Jr and his wife came through and his wifes guitar would not play a D chord at 2nd fret right due to scale and no buzzy Fieten tuning system yet so Steve Crisp removed the fret and cut the tang back where the fret could be bent sharp some... just a bit till it would allow a D chord to be played there just like a Folk D chord and stay in tune. When I saw that and played it I could not believe what my eyes were telling me.. Right on the spot I knew I had to be able to do that and so I kept bugging them to let me work there and NO was the answer.. But by being there anyway while they did the work on my instrument I learned so much from them Bill Collings was there also at the time just those 3 Mike Stevens Steve Crisp and Bill Collings. Changed my entire life meeting them and they lured me right in with some pranks.. They Fixed Jrs wifes guitar on the spot and at or about the same time is when Srv broke #1s neck and brought it in holding on too it so tightly because the headstock snapped off. ENTIRELY an the only thing holding it on were 6 strings still and Stevie was crying with tears streaming down his face and Michael came out and said let me have it and had to kinda take it out of Stevies hands and he looked real serious at Stevie Ray and put his hand on his shoulder and said YOU FUCKED IT UP and I LAUGHED SO HARD I COULD NOT BREATHE YOU coulda heard a pin drop in there before that but not after I laughed so hard it made Stevie Ray start laughing and I had to apologize while still laughing and then tell Srv they will fix it and you wont even be able to tell.. And what Stevens did was use me to break the ice..... I will never forget that as long as I live but if you cant laugh at yourself your in trouble... When the guitar was finished they called me down to watch Michael shoot my 58 neck after doing the radius and they showed me how Srvs guitar was fixed and indeed I could barely tell it was ever broken as they glued it back together and layered thin wood over the break replacing the Fender logo and replacing the Ciggy burn back in on low e side and painted it back to look as it did before the break.. ! I was really hooked at fixing them then. I still fix and repair guitars if anyone one needs it. North Texas now... Do some repairs on amps also.

Rumour has it that junior brown taught srv how to play or gave him lessons! I don’t know if that’s true but both guys I guess were in the Austin Texas area were Texas seems to sprout so many great guitar players and pickers like Ernest tubbs and Eric Johnson who got a Grammy in 89 I believe for cliffs of Dover that being said I’ve been listening to junior for 20 years now and never get tired of his immense skill tremendously underrated guitarist who should be much more recognized a true gem then and now as he keeps getting better every year and yes that’s a classic 65 Rivera with the clamshell headlights a total classic best year Rivera ever made especially a Riveria gs with a 425 nailhead engine with dual quads
