Trifle was my dad's favorite dessert and I made it twice a year: Father's day and his birthday. Over the years I went from doing it all from scratch to "semi-homemade" with store-bought poundcake and pudding from a box. But I absolutely had to have fresh whipped cream and the fresh berries. I never would have thought to put pineapple in the pudding--sounds delicious! I don't know if I'll make trifle this year since my dad passed away at New Year's. My mom would sometimes try to make trifle and she said she couldn't ever get it to turn out like mine. It's all about the bowl. You gotta have that straight-sided clear trifle bowl. My other family members would request that I make trifle for all of our family functions and I said, "nope. I only make it twice a year because if I made it more often, it wouldn't be special." Thank you, Sara for sharing your version--it looks great! And thank you for letting me share about my dad.

I just made a similar triffle for my son’s birthday a few days ago. I make it with a white cake, homemade custard and whip cream. I use strawberries, blueberries and kiwis between the layers. It is my kids favorite! I think they will love your version with the juicy pineapple. Can’t wait to give it a try. Love your channel !

You should add port wine jelly as a layer as well. My family in Australia make it as follows: diced cake, 1/4 cup dry sherry, fruit (usually a can of two fruits), custard, cream and strawberries. Yummmm

This would also be good made with chocolate pound cake for the cake layer and pitted cherries for the fruit. Yum. This makes a good summertime meal dessert, since it's cold and fairly light on the tongue, but my diabetes would never allow me to enjoy it-- too many carbs. Maybe a spoonful or two I suppose. But for those who are not glucose intolerant, I believe I said yum! Yum!

This recipe would taste best made with homemade whipped cream anyway, and be a lot better for you. Cool Whip is convenient but very fake and full of stuff that's not so good for us. Whipped cream OTOH is just fresh dairy (probably cream, but even skim milk can be whipped), some confectioners sugar and some vanilla. Whip it up with a mixer about 15 minutes before serving, start the layering, and the dish can go on the table very fast. The real thing would taste worlds better than Redi-Whip out of a can IMO. So just my two cents.

Where I'm from we would put fruit in first, then make up jelly overtop of fruit. Let that set. Then layer with sponge cake, more, fruit, custard, layer upon layer. Then whip cream on top, grate some chocolate on top of cream, n add fruit like strawberries n peaches. Hmm yum
