Unless you were a kid during the height of his fame you probably cannot even begin to grasp how beloved he was. I’ve read that many believe McMahon wasted the opportunity to capitalize on JYD’s star power and as one of those kids that loved him, I’d have to agree. He wasn’t the Hulk Hogan of the south, he was bigger and badder. Always was and always will be ❤️

Damn skippy, JYD was not promoted very well in the WWF/WWE. JYD was greater than Hogan.

JYD once lived across the street from my cousin in Natchitoches Louisiana. On occasion we would see him outside mowing his grass or doing yard work. We got his autograph of course and he was the nicest guy. This was the early 80s.

That is one of the things that JYD was know for was being nice to fans even when he was drugged up. One unlucky fan saw JYD in a gang house during and getting drugs to sell. It had effect on this young man that lead him down to the path of joining that particular gang. The hurt in this man eyes, when he told the story was heart breaking.

The first time I saw JYD on TV was when he joined the WWF and back then, they were playing "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen for his theme music; as soon as that music played, the fans went nuts and JYD quickly got over due to his incredible charisma. In fact, he was basically #2 in popularity -- right behind Hogan himself... he was something else! RIP, JYD!
