When I was homeless, I learned from other homeless people how to survive without stealing or begging on a corner. I do not criticize or condemn those who do have to beg. A good part of urban survival is being invisible. If SHTF happens, and you find yourself "unskilled," find someone homeless and pay them (money, food, shelter) to teach you. For water jugs, I saved gatorade and powerade 1 qt bottles and filled them in bathrooms. I never gave a darn who saw me- no one said anything.

I have a foraging bag too! Its made out of two towels sewn together so it doubles as a towel. It has a strip on it for running a belt through and my kit goes INTO the foraging bag which then folds in half. It rides on my belt like a dream although it looks like a 9 months pregnant sweet potato. It weighs just under a kilogram.

That water key information is worth the entire video!!! Outstanding review of the kit and watched it twice. Although a hobo hear in the East is more prone to rail yards and back ways along the tracks and outskirts of small towns. I live near a "Hobo" village located across the mill property about a mile down the rail line. Usually approximately 30 to 40 hobos and sometimes bums can be found around there. The bums can be dangerous but the guys who call themselves hobo are alright . You can hire them out for day work for fifty and a meal and they will work their tails off. Bums won't work at all.

@@HoboRoadrunner yes ,I know sometimes those who wander are not lost . When I was very young I had a relative ( we called him uncle Jack) he was the son of my great grandmother's stepsister ( long story) . But he lived a hobo style life . He would hop a train and go to places all over the US . He even visited Canada and Mexico . He once was gone for two years and everyone thought he had died or been killed but he showed up with small gifts from Colombia. He would do odjobs around the village like painting houses and I would tag along behind him and listen to some stories he would tell . So he passed some knowledge of the hobo way. He told me of signs and markings but that's been over forty years ago. He lived till he was in his late seventies. The last time he disappeared was about the time I went into high school. When he came back he was very sick and he stayed up with his sister's house and family till he passed.

Mine is an old 3-compartment red cosmetic bag. Two zippered compartments and in the middle one flat with loopy thingies. Works like a bomb. I made a few mods. The whole thing took me about 6 weeks to fully get together. Designed, redesigned, put things in, took things out, reorganised things. Currently holds about 190 items...

James, thank you so much. I love this stuff and your channel is one of the best. I like to “hobocation” and do regularly. I travel by bus, anywhere I want to go, Urban or not and hang out for weeks. Thanks for your wonderful channel. I’ll definitely be trying and I’m sure buying this pack! I have traveled every kind of way EXCEPT nomadically and I meet more people and have more fun this way than ever. When I start to feel like I’m becoming feral, I’ll check in a nice little motel. Recoup, make a plan and then head out to another place.😊 Happy Friday travels my friend. Oh, I’m 57😂.

It should go without saying, waring cargo pants, with much of your stuff in them, is better than having a exposed pack, while being a " gray man". Even so a small kit bag or small day pack, bed roll and a few other exposed carry thing is a huge help. This is a nice compact kit, Making it look a bit worn would be nice too. I find that I learn more new stuff, when watching someone who knows his stuff. Here I learned about the little water wrench and water access points. Thanks James ;-)

A short piece of wire with a nut & bolt attached to each end acts as a opener for maintenence type manhole covers. Slip one end into a hole in the manhole and using the other end as a handle, pull up the manhole cover...instant access to a safe, dry urban shelter. Some of these can turn into underground mansions with lighting and power!

Great video man! I get that this is supposed to showcase survival, but I really wouldn't heat and eat straight out of a canned food container. They use some sort of lining on there (used to BPA but they use something else nowadays) and heating it over a direct fire will probably send it right into the food. If possible, maybe you can incorporate a small 500ml snow peak mini titanium cooking pot into the kit? It might seem bulky at first, but you can stuff other items into the mini pot itself

Gotta say I really dig that bag. I’ve just never found anything hidden woodsman I could afford. They have very nice designs just totally outside of my price range. I know it’s bad to say but I’d rather use a Chinese bag and have money to go out then sit home for months buying gear that’s not much better in the long run. I’m on a very fixed income that’s why some of these gear videos are pipe dreams. The other one that really gets me is knife prices. I now use BPS adventurer and a Old hickory custom for fishing. One other knife I highly recommend is Utica Ute-n2 neck knife. It is with me whenever I walk outside. Hard to lose something around your neck , unless your head falls off.

Hey Richard, I too have looked into Hidden Woodsman and yes, awesome stuff but not for my wallet. The most important thing I can say is get the best that you can afford. If that means china made so be it. Better to have something than nothing. This video shows what you can do with concepts that maybe we haven’t thought about ourselves. The gear he has with him including bag is probably between $100-$150 (I’m just talking a stab at the overall cost so don’t blast me if I’m wrong) but you can do the same thing for a lot less.
@richardhenry1969
@richardhenry1969 Жыл бұрын
@@TheHighAngler yes very true. It just seems crazy how KZbin went from people showing gear that’s not expensive and holds up. To becoming a commercial that never saying anything bad about the most expensive gear. Even worse is because it’s now trendy to camp hike an bushcarft anything that can be put into those categories suddenly jumps in value. When I was younger those 3 things were the same now they are separate ideas. What really blows my mind is the ultra light hiker an how much that stuff cost. Most of the ultra light people won’t even touch survival gear because it’s to heavy. It’s amazing how corporations have made outdoor activity a huge money pit. While alienating everyone. I guess making it seem special each area is a way to make people buy what they are pushing. Just my opinion.
