Making an accurate Jurassic Park™ Embryo Cryocan V2.0

FOR SOME it may have gone unnoticed, but I was informed by keen fans that the Jurassic Park cryocan prop replica is not correct. For many years the replicas have been made from newer cans, which show clear differences to the screen used prop (even in some cases 10oz volume instead of 11oz). So I went and upgraded my replica to make it as accurate as possible!
EDIT: The fans who helped with this have now allowed me to credit them, so special thanks to Milan Livada, Paul Elder and Jennie Wood. It was Jennie who suggested the use of the adhesive vinyl.

Love the how to! As an aside, I found it better to remove the bottom of the can using a "safety can" opener that cuts through the can bottom edge, leaving a very smooth edge to the bottom of the can. Keeps the can's integrity and makes it much sturdier... far less malleable and definitely not sharp. 😉

Actually, from what John Bell(the guy who chose the can) said is that that for him the script said “a shaving cream can”(but with specific no brand like Gillette mentioned), so in result he chose the can from the store he got it from himself.

I would just use an empty paint can of a similar shape, paint the top white, and since they are usually longer I would trim it down to the shaving cream can length(I actually take advantage of the extra length so I can stop to a point where the length will enable me to have the “11 ounce” part higher compared to using an old shaving cream can which you might just end up shortening them length of it in result of removing the bottom and sanding it down). Oh and put a Barbasol cap on top of it.

Walmart’s store brand, “Super Tech” brake cleaner is in steel cans suitable for this project. They’re taller than you’ll need, so you have plenty of extra to cut down to size.

I believe multiple cans were used in the making of the film, the can being held when its first shown is different than the can in the river/water fall scene at the end. I believe its because of lighting and the way they chose to shoot the scene. correct me if im wrong, I the size of the can differs in that regard as well.

In the novel it was a Gillette can; I cannot find anywhere the reason they went with a Barbasol. Either A. Gillette declined, or B. the filmmakers thought Barbasol cans looked cooler and more eye popping.

True, I do my best to convey this in the video, as its been a journey of many years - however Chronicle Collectibles are making a licensed replica which will be available. Since making this video its even come to light the inner aluminium mechanism is different, with diagonal struts coming off the shaft. So I will be reviewing that when that comes out

use a sdarp knife on bottom, place can on a towel on its side so it can roll. then put blade against the seam at the bottom and rock it. you will get a perfect cut.

I see one fairly major problem with the purchased replica. The compartment seems rather snug when trying to remove it from the barbasol can and seems to take quite a bit of force to open. This would be a problem because the barbasol can itself is only a thin layer of metal. When pulling the compartment out, using too much strength would result in dents forming in the can. Your personal made replica looked like it took significant less force to open, giving the prop a far better appeal.

Thank you. Yes they are quite snug, this is mainly due to the rubber o ring which creates a near vacuum seal and means it takes a bit of force to open. Its common on these replicas but you're right a smoother release is desirable

The official can shape? I'd always recommend getting as close to it as you can. I've heard builders say that they've found similar aerosol cans for other products. This was just the best way I could make sure it was from the right sort of time period 80s-early 90s so it matched the shape
