11:11, you seem shocked 😂 when ARMY tells you Korean artists face racism/xenophobia in the US, it’s not exaggeration or a light comment, it’s real. Even with PSY, I was a kid while black peers/family called every East Asian they saw “look, Gangnam style!” while not knowing shit about Korean culture. Or Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc… we need to stop downplaying anti-Asian hate, it’s the reason why it escalated to what it became in the past couple of years. Disgusting :( as far as psy being a culture shock in his behavior in videos, look at all of the artists on MTV around that time that we didn’t bat an eye at because they spoke English. They did even crazier things in their videos, and off camera. Racism/xenophobia definitely had to do with PSY’s response, outside of the memefication(?). But I digress…

i like what you said at the end. bts never actually said they paved the way, they are always very humble. whenever they do a livestream after a concert they're always honest and saying they think they could've done betther (even though for us they were amazing). there is always that desire to work harder and be better. they get excited about meeting celebreties they grew up admiring even though they are at the same level of popularity if not more. they are truly very humble and down to earth

I have been thinking this..this are my thoughts and ideas why it is so hard for them to understand or not see the obvious (besides the things mentioned in the video. Which is funny now because anytime they talk about this they always point out at least one of these points from the video): 1. Jealously 2. They don’t understand what we mean by paved the way or will say 1&2 paved the way for BTS…which I can see both sides to this… 3. Just like how the Big3 control the media and everything people don’t also realize their impact. Especially since BP are big too but get more “coverage” because of them being apart of the big3 (also say that BP paved their own way) 4. I heard this so and so group before BTS

Originally, "BTS paved the way" was used by ARMYs as an hyperbolic expression as a form of praise or endearment within the fandom. It was like saying "slay, king!" or "you're the best!" or "my number one!" to your favorite artist. We used to write this comment under BTS tweets or when we were celebrating an achievement or a particularly impressive performance. When BTS popularity started to "explode" exponentially in the west, those Kpop fans who had been envious or dismissive towards BTS, they started getting triggered by this saying (when they invade ARMYs space online) and discrediting BTS or fighting with ARMYs. They took this phrase way more literally than intended, not with the light-headed humorous and cheerful tone that ARMYs used. Ironically, it was only later on, when western tv hosts and media gave BTS the label of "the biggest boy band in the world" and when BTS socioeconomic impact started being studied and reported on in more mainstream media, when the phrase became more "serious". And then ARMYs felt forced to use arguments to defend this posture, when others would demand us to stop "lying" or stop "being arrogant and ungrateful". Although there is certainly true on this statement, personally, I think it's a shame we can't praise our favorite group without people taking it as a personal attack or offense. In a way, "BTS paved the way" belongs to the same bag than "President Namjoon", "Golden Maknae", "Worldwide Handsome", etc. It's simply us expressing our love and admiration for Bangtan.

Whenever someone questions BTS' influence or importance, I will always talk about how when I was a kid, it was impossible for me to find and buy kpop albums. I had to either find a bootleg copy at a hard to find korean supermarket or on a shady website. And I lived through all the hallyu waves since the 90s hahaha. But once BTS started becoming big, I found BTS at a freakin' Target. And then more kpop groups and artists becoming available at Target shortly afterwards hahaha.

@@Jurnalist_ many early kpop fans found kpop from TV. I have heard so many early fans say they happened to have few Asian channels by chance in their tv package and came across some singers (eg. Boa etc.) But then some others found about it if they luckily had a kpop concert or kcon in their area. A few exceptions are countries like Japan. I would say what bts did globally Boa did in Japan. Not just due to popularity since i don't equate paving the way to just that. Like bts brought in investors and increased the market value massively, (alongside creating real sociopolitical influence with their music) and really got the media to a level where they just couldn't ignore the impact even if they wished to, Boa did with Japan. So in Japan, kpop is extremely popular inspite the already existing Japanese music industry. Part a reason why almost every kpop group since 2000s release Japanese singles or Japanese versions is because of the way boa opened up.

24:18 you gotta remember there are different beauty standards everywhere. People in Italy may like a certain type of man, as a whole, while in China the standard would be totally different. In places like the US, Australia, England, big burly guys sometimes with beards are hot. In parts of Asia, slim, "feminine" (by western standards) are hot. As for fashion, south Korea is super trendy and fashionable. It was true when I lived there in the early 90s when 1st gen kop was a baby. The fashion trends there when I 1st arrived, I remember thinking the outfits were cute but I didn't like the way they'd mix say, stripes and plaid. Now, 30 years later, I love it all. And personally, I love androgyny. I've always thought it was dumb and closed minded to assign genders to activities & items. Big burly dude with a beard wants to wear a dress and heavy makeup? I bet he'd look great. Woman wants to wear a tux? Good on ya. As long as the person is happy who cares right? 💜🙂 Thx for watching all of these. Poor PSY, I really wish people would take some time to get into his discography and career because he does deserve a second listen. I remember watching music shows as a kid with my grandmother and PSY just STOOD OUT, especially amongst all the impeccably groomed (and much younger) idols. He had strange dance moves, his music was comedic, and his lyrics were deemed controversial. Like BTS, he often spoke truth to power about social problems, and he self-produced his first three albums. He's won a lot of awards for songwriting as well. PSY's career is also really interesting; he studied music at Berklee and has his own label now.

I agree to this completely. Infact I doubt most people even realise that gagnam style is an imitation to mock many sociopolitical events. His music isn't my ever favourite but he surely is a true artist who carved out his own style (which has a vibe that anyone can bang their head to atleast occassionally) and he still slays at his age. And I wouldn't mind going to one of his super super hype water concerts cause that's a whole mood and experience of it's own kind. The west of course needed a reason to write him off. I do think his music may not hit personal to the millions like bts does due to their diversity and ever relatable lyrics but he is far from just a funny show and surely a deep thinker that is capable of making you think too if you dive deep!

41:00 Hahaha tbh, I do think this is one of the things that bts differs from the rest of kpop. They have the best team chemistry. They are the most humble and kindest, even behind the scenes and cameras. There's countless of staff stories about how kind they are and I just recently read a story from a janitor that said BTS were the only ones who helped and thanked them for cleaning up. BTS also does well to remember where they are from and note the people who helped them and influenced them. They don't hide those things like other groups do, nor do they try to uphold a certain arrogance that some people believe idols or celebrities should have. BTS' relatability is another one of their good points.

If I could I want to do the flexing for them. BTS just being Bangtan Sonyeondan humble and let their work and the results speak for itself. You will never hear it from them to say they paved the way instead would give credit to those before them at times or their inspiration. The narrator speak FACTS. She appreciate all the Kpop groups before BTS for introducing KPOP but those all Kpop groups never paved for other artists like BTS did. Because the Big 3 (SM, YG, JYP) companies never let others artists to shine and love to sabotage other artists especially artists from small companies. They are also the reason why BTS take longer time to get popular. BTS has made the path become more easier for others to enter. And now the Big 3 is busy trying to create the 'next BTS' and throwing away their artist natural talent instead of letting their artist to create music in their own way or style. All Kpop artists is unique and I don't want them to be 'next someone'. They can be big and successful in their own way instead of being in someone's shadow. Since I'm becoming Kpop fan in 2011, I love the diversity of music and style in Kpop industry.

There are a few ways that BTS is already paving the way for western artists in some respects. I don’t think it’s come up in any of the videos you’ve watched that when Big Hit went public and became part of Hybe, BTS were given shares in the company which was seen as unprecedented in both Kpop and western music. Musically there are western artists that have either mentioned them directly or have clearly taken inspiration from their success (Taylor Swift’s method of releasing physicals for her last couple projects have been very inspired by KPop tactics which I would say wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for BTS. I don’t think you’ve checked out the Rolling stone artist on artist interview between Pharrell and RM - I think you would be very interested to watch that (you can find the full interview on KZbin, the printed version cuts some portions).

So PSY, opened the door. Peeked in and slowly retreated, but here comes BTS, kicking that damn Door. The 7 Kings of Nobody, backed by loyal armies. 💜 And just a reminder.. Remember when BTS was ever first nominated for BBMA Top Social, how others kept hating, saying its just a paper award, that their idols do not need those.. All I can say, karma is a Btch huh, who's aiming for who now? 😏😏😏😏 Even other kpop idols and artist admits how BTS paved the way 😅and BTS themselves , humble as they are, always thank their sunbeinims (senior idols) for inspiring them... so stop hating and start supporting ur artist... just saying 😏

@ZariDV
@ZariDV Жыл бұрын
The PSY paved the way point was always so interesting to me. I suppose I could see why Koreans in particular had that point of view as people who had never seen one of their countrymen blowing up in such a huge way compared to others in the industry. For me, and many people I've spoken with, Gangnam Style was a viral pop bop that got popular then died out and we all sort of moved on without thinking anything more about it or PSY. Many people had no idea that he was Korean, that his genre was called kpop, or that he'd even made songs before or after Gangnam Style. So many people I've talked to considered PSY to be a one-hit wonder because they had no idea how popular and beloved he is in Korea. So it's hard to have someone pave the way when people never grew curious enough to look any deeper into him, his discography, his country, his genre, or anything. You can't make things easier for those who came before you when the general audience treats one of your songs as a fad and ignores you for the most part after that. To me paving the way requires a level of public or industry wide engagement and buy-in. It's upsetting in retrospect because PSY didn't deserve to be discarded the way he was in the West. I loved Gangnam Style when I was in high school because it was fun but it was an entire decade later (after discovering BTS) when I found out what the song was actually about, that it was kpop and that he had been in the game a long ass time with huge popularity. BTS in comparison has created so much content (as musicians, vloggers/KZbinrs, game show participants, etc) that people discover them in a bunch of different ways that cause once-casual fans to "go down the rabbithole". You have people digging into Korean culture and trying Korean food, movies, tv shows, skincare, makeup, fashion, music and travelling there. They are affecting tourism and the economy by how many people go to visit. Many fans get so tired of only seeing the watered down poetry that we get from subtitles that lack the full impact of the Korean language that people start learning a whole new language. There's an ARMY-run account that offers free Korean lessons to ARMY and their friends/family and they just posted about how they got over 940 applications from potential students hoping to get in this month alone. People only focus on the musical influence but there's a much bigger phenomeon brewing where a much larger reach is happening, spurred by interest in BTS. They have consumer engagement and buy-in. Lots of idol groups get songs that catch on temporarily in the global space but new-comers aren't exploring them too deeply after they hear the 4th or 5th plastic pop track and get bored. If people are going to go through the effort to look into your lyrics, often times they want the effort to be worth it. I could listen to "dance dance, party party, I'm in love with blah blah" tracks in English otherwise. English speakers are lazy. If you're going to make us work for it, it needs to feel worth it.

I'm into Kdrama before BTS but not into Kpop--I don't know I just can't relate with most Kpop songs. They sound good and catchy but that just it. Their lyrics don't bear much weight and substance so I did not get invested in it. BTS is... for me beyond a phenomenon! It's like having a full course on self-development, self-acceptance, self-awareness, etc.. Watching them makes me want to become a better person. I love the positive influence they brought into my life. Although I regret not knowing them sooner because of the Kpop stigma being too shallow (for me) but I'm glad I gave them a chance. 😊 Btw, what is that ARMY account giving free hangeul lessons? I want to learn ..jebal! 🙏💜

The cultural differences are really important and interesting. We tend to view BTS through a western entertainment industry lens but understanding the differences in the culture and industry in which they move is vital. Few people take the time to do it. Judging them through our lens is not just unfair, I think it's also part of the reason people misunderstand how they have done this. Learning more about it has been a fascinating journey for me (far from done).

32:17 Sunbae (선배) means a senior in your field of work, school etc. As you know, the Korean language is heavily influenced by hierarchy levels. So if you start working in something or studying something and there already is someone that has been working there or studying it longer than you, that person is considered to have more experience, even if they are younger, and you're required to refer to them as "seniors" (sunbae, sunbae-nim is just added formality). For example: BTS debuted in 2013, Twice debuted in 2015. So BTS was working as idols for 2 years before Twice debuted, therefore they are more experienced, Twice's sunbaes. Twice, on the other hand, are BTS' hoobaes (juniors). Just to be more clear: BlackPink debuted in 2016. One of their members, Jisoo, is like 30 or almost 30. Jungkook is 25. Jisoo is *still* Jungkook's hoobae, Jungkook is *still* Jisoo's sunbae, even if she's older, because he debuted in 2013 with BTS, 3 years before BlackPink.

Each rapper in BTS rapline have a verse where they explain how and why they fell in love with Hip Hop and the chorus is song by the vocal line. I recommed you listen to the lyric video FIRST then watch the stage performance. Please please please!!! I know its a BTS song and you wanted to wait, but it is mainly done by the rapline so maybe we can bump that one up? just an idea.... 28:44 "I dont know none if these ppl" dont worry bruv you about to xD I didnt mention all of them unfortunately bc we'd be here all day lmao but I made sure to get you the most popular ones. I'm working on a more indepth list just for myself because I have an obsession with list making. Being an Literature major brings this out of me lol 32:16 sunbaenim means "senior" in your career path or field. It can be toward someone who's done a thing longer than you and are more experienced, or a term of respect for someone who you feel are more talented than you are at that thing. 34:30 I would agree, but since we are talking about kpop music and artists, they cant say they dont like it when they are constantly copying or trying to make the same music as BTS. So I dont think they can use that excuse. It's definitely jealous. If it was a different type of genre then yeah I'd agree here. But they all trying to be like BTS so they obviously like the music xD 38:17 Im sorry my dawg but you are completely off here. It's not "culture" its literally capitalism. These are TV shows that are meant to cover and show the biggest hits in KPOP. BTS is factually the biggest hit in kpop, so covering them on your tv shows isn't selling out. It's telling the TRUTH in your media. It's similar to when a talented or famous black person is misrepresented in the media or completely left out because they are black. Its not the same as paying a journalist to tell a lie. It's purposely excluding the truth because they arent one of your "buddies". That is a prime example of capitalism. BTS are the biggest Korean act in the world, but they are RARELY if ever shown in Korea. You wont see them on TV, on billboards, on advertisements. Even HYUNDAI WHO SPONSORS THEM dont mention them in Korean stores. They are so egregiously disregarded in Korea because they have no power there. The companies that do only do so because of money and channels that have been sewn decades ago, and BTS arent willing to pay for respect like these other artists. As youve seen in other videos, when they are disrespected or disregarded they will simply stop attending and do their own thing. So they've never attempted to buy their way, I'm sure if they did they would succeed in the first place. So I do think you have it backwards here... The funny thing about this argument (it was and is still popular on twitter. hashtags started this argument) is BTS never said out of their mouth that they've paved the way. Not in any facet or iteration of the term. They do not claim to be hallmarks and trend setters. They do not claim to be the goto for Kpop. They always credit other artists: BIGBANG, Seo Teji, Epik High, Nas, JCole, multiple other black artists that inspire them. This whole argument and conversation came from the fandom lmao. So even though, in retrospect, BTS did pave the way, it's not something I say. That's not their goal. Their goal is simply to make music theyre proud of and help people, leave a positive impression on the world. They dont care about being the "ones who paved the way" even though they are :)

honestly i think the majority of the groups don't actually want to be bts, they might see them as someone to aspire to be like but they all work so hard and train so much that they don't have the space to think that. a lot of them are young and might be guillable and proned by people's words and their management to hate them for the success even though i've never seen any kind of hostility from other groups directly (my experience, don't know if there have been instances). i think the big brain behind all of this trying to bring down bts are the conglomerates behind the music market inn south korea. the ones who are looking for the next bts are the companies managing these artists. it's honestly so fascinating to me how bts at this point could be put in the same conversation with cultural changing acts like michael jackson, of course each their own time and space and yet they are never credited for it. i've noticed that whenever their success is being talked about, it's always referred to how they made a breakthrough in the US but never about their cultural impact. you never hear news outlets or even music critics speak about their music when talking about their success. in korea they praise the fact they are famous and get the streams outside of the country, in the US they 'praise' their huge following but no one ever stops to discuss their cultural impact, their life changing music and lyrics. the same way michael jackson revulotionised music and is considered the king of pop, bts's lyricism and story telling has inspired so many (myself included) in a way that has never been done before and the fandom is so big that you can't categorize it as something exclusive and for few people. this is what i think bothers a lot of armys. we see bts' impact and we know its big and its not just about the numbers and all the steroids that we get fed these days as you said (which is an unfortunate reality of the music industry). this is also why you'll find a lot of videos about their story, about their achievements made by fans because a lot of these achievements are not taken into consideration by the media and the general public. there's a saying between armys that 'you don't find bts, bts finds you' and there is so much power behind that statement. there's a very beautiful documentary done by a fellow army where they interviewed other armys about their bts experience and i think it holds a lot of power so if maybe later on, when you've listened to more of their music and understood a little more about them and us, you can check it out. here's the link for part 1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaaUpZ9jZclrodk

Idol groups don’t want to be called BTS because they’re their own perspective groups. I would say otherwise for the company though, SM created SuperM which was essentially supposed to be the “next BTS” (and they purposefully paid journalists to make articles about it, talking about this legendary ‘avengers of kpop group’ while not actually doing so great overall). These company have profits in mind (and will use HUGE mediaplay) and they will try to break whatever record BTS has and specifically that. That is why they’re in BTS’ shadows: it’s because they aren’t unique and they’re just using the formula BTS used and treating the path BTS paved as an instant path to success. Groups need to have originality as Boracity said. BTS are an anomaly in the industry that’s one of the reasons why they got popular and were loved.

Let me tell you how things used to be, before BTS for someone who enjoyed Korean music and media: it was niche, very niche. There were no official KZbin channels for any of the companies/artists, and no social media pages on sites that were used in Western countries. People used to go on Naver, despite not knowing Korean, just to follow their favourite artists. Fans used to spread music videos, clips, pics on KZbin and Facebook, and initially these used to be blocked by the companies, until they realised that they might have a market over here, and they opted to sit back and watch instead. More and more people started enjoying this content and at some point there was a strong and clear demand for albums and concerts to be exported. When I say strong and clear, I mean petitions, worldwide flash mobs (you can still find clips online lol) and international fans making accounts on Korean sites to vote for their fav. artists. I remember going to a flash mob in london for some fun, and the Korean news arrived there to interview people! I remember going to see Shinee at Abbey Road (they were there to record something, not to perform), and bein surrounded by 200+ other fans on the street. It felt so weird because I didn't know anyone who listened to this music before. SM, YG and JYP finally started attempting concerts (extremely expensive ones) on this side of the world, initially bringing over multiple artists from their companies to perform on the same stage, likely to test the waters. From what I remember, the Korean gov. was partly funding these, to support the Hallyu wave. It also became easier to buy albums from Korea as many (but not any cheaper!). At some point Big bang won top social artist award, and then Psy happened. There was a slow and consistent growth in the export of Korean media (not just music) so there was a path present ... What BTS did, in my opinion, is make the whole industry take a huge leap on that path, also opening new branches of opportunities for other artists to experiment with. They did this by taking many risks, while the big companies were often very cautious and too focused on making money quickly, rather than nurturing their audience for more long term gains. By the way, Japanese visual kei, Jpop and Jdramas were also popular around that time, but the country has very strict copyright and media export laws and they never opened up to the oversees audience, that simply died out. Sorry for the long comment, I love arts and find it really interesting to see how it's being experienced all over the world. BTS is like a renaissance in a way, I'm curious about the future...

@@anitasimon8698 Absolutely! So much has changed since BTS, and they were different from the very beginning. I've seen people say that BigBang did it first because they write and produce some of their music and have a lot of agency over their work and social media etc., but I don't think that's comparable because they only got to that point later in their careers, when they were famous enough to be indispensable for their company. BTS had values and a work ethic that separated them from the rest, and a big difference was also that they invested a lot of effort and time in their fans, in a way that other groups/companies did not

41:40 100% agree with what you said, but I think Kpop communities, Idols, companies and fandoms alike care about things like this because Kpop in general is analyzed to such a microscopic level: from physical albums, streams, youtube views, twitter trends, to something as silly as most instagram followers, most replayed part in a video, most mentions by other artists. These things are reported on constantly, companies publish articles about them, fandoms fight about them.All of these are used as bragging rights. In such a system, it is a direct slap on the face for any active group to outright say "BTS paved the way". Very few groups throw caution to the wind and focus on the music. It is slowly, very slowly changing I think/ hope.

I think that if you are secure in who you are and your gender or sexuality, you can dress more feminine or masculine and just be comfortable with who you are. There's this strange thing that I see with guys that you HAVE to be manly and you HAVE to struggle alone and I just think that leads to a very lonely existence.

if you EVER seen Ninja Assassin ( yeah the movie) THAT's Rain lol. He is a singer and actor. All the folks that you said you didn't know, ARE Korean. Epik High and Dynamic Duo (DaDU they are called for short in Korea) and verbal Jint, San E and Drunken Tiger (AKA Tiger JK)are pretty Legendary in Korean Hip-Hop scene in their own rights. I'm not sure if they are all considered Gen 1... I know Tiger JK is for sure. San E, Verbal Jint and Epink High are kind of in between. Baek Ji-Young is a singer. I'm not quite sure if she'd be consider hip-hop or R& B though. SHE is also extremely well know in Korea as a vocalist though. Rain's gener is... well... i guess kind of R& B. He is really well known for his dance abilities. Psy, I think is, oddly enough, considered to be... sort of hip-Hop and R&B... although I don't personally think of him as such. He is entertaining that's what he is lol. I love his humor, it's silly. And the songs are fun, MV has comedic feels to them. He is a busy man... He is a PNation CEO. I wonder whatever happen to him going into the his dad's company... I swear I Heard after his success of Gang Nam Style (oddly enough, I am from Gang Nam, Seoul originally) I hear his dad's company stock went up and his dad wanted him to work at the company... but few years later, he created P Nation. Which IS a Hip-Hop label

I know this is an old post, but still going to share my opinion. It's okay to not like the "biggest" act, there are plenty that were the "biggest" that I really didn't care much for their music. I still however, when asked, spoke with respect with what they brought to the industry, what they accomplished, even though I really didn't like them even today, there are many artists at the top, I just don't get how they are on the top, but I feel that majority of the people like them, like their music, so they are doing something right. I can't stand to see people and artists alike, make themselves bigger than they are, try to take more credit than they deserve. Part of what is appealing to me about BTS is they openly and continually pay respect to artists that have inspired them. I could keep going, but yes, I like artists that are not full of themselves, speak on and pay respect to other artists.

Korea is generally quite accepting of more androgynous style of dressing, men wearing a bit of natural makeup or having feminine clothing isn't too looked down upon, especially in the entertainment industry where they value fashion and looks very much, you can go crazy with your outfits and as long as they don't deem your outfit too slutty, it's fine It's a huge contrast to the way they then actually treat more feminine men or masculine women, Korea is still quite homophobic and misogynistic and they will slut shame any female idol who dresses "too promiscuously" and they do not quite accept gay people in the industry. The only openly gay idol in Korea was semi recently attacked and beaten because of his sexuality, and former idol Sulli was harassed and criticized heavily for speaking about women's rights, later when she opened up about the abuse she had suffered, they twisted it and blamed her, the harassment got even worse and she was bullied by Korean netizens to the point that she tragically ended her own life. A similar thing happened to Hara, another female idol who was relentlessly harassed for similar reasons, after her ex boyfriend posted revenge porn of her and she got blamed and ridiculed for it and the harassment intensified, she sadly took her own life as well. It's just so ironic to me that you can and should dress sexily but if you do it in an empowering way or for yourself, you will be relentlessly criticized. Same goes for how male idols should dress well and often in interesting androgynous styles, fan service is encouraged and lesbian and gay "aesthetics" are often used for music videos and photoshoots, but god forbid you are actually gay then that's crossing the line.

7:50 I think I recommended Psy in some other video (his latest album is fire for me, I love the man beyond his sweet 1-hit funny title tracks: Daddy, New Face, Hangover with Snoop etc), but more than open the door... I don't know, at least in my surroundings it was a mockery about what Koreans had for music, so Psy did many other things and had to bear with them (including depression and a lot of things he's mentioned here and there), but Kpop was perceived as "funny" stuff after him + factory made groups. So GP would never go for lyrics or artful presentations imho. And yes, it was racism. A lot. I lived it here in Europe, still to this day when you ask someone about the song or Psy, check their reaction. As if nobody before him had had funny tracks (SNL says hello among others). Nah, it was the "chinese" singing and dancing around for many people. And he's talked about it how he went global but sitll was received by konnichi was and ni haos. Nah, man. PS. Psy is a hip hop artist. He has a story like SUGA (Yoongi). He wrote for others, got ripped off or nobody wanted his stuff, so he decided to sing himself. He started in 2002.

34:00 The issue is not liking them or recognizing they are big. Paving the way for their fellow Korean artists doesn't have to do with any of that. It means that now, new groups say "I want to achieve BB HOT100, 200, Grammys" ONLY because BTS has done it. They broke the wall between dreams and reality. Even then in earlier years would joke "hahaha, yeah, we can get a grammy, sure" because they themselves didn't believe it was possible, they just kept working hard and accept the growth as it came and the awards associated. Whereas the industry right now teaches their artists "you have to do this and that to get HOT100 entry and you HAVE TO". They mess with the kids minds, making them focus on bigger goals instead of just being #1 in their country, getting some significant awards (rookie of the year, or song of the year)... Nope, they aim at what BTS got in 10 years of blood, sweat and tears. That's what BTS have done for them. That is paving the way. As she says at the end and you also: paving the way is not the biggest deal, nor does it mean you are the best ever. May be small groups much better than BTS (I doubt it but I don't know everything) at composing, singing, dancing... but still, if they are able to aim for something they never in their lives thought possible before... then it's thanks to BTS.

Great reaction! 34:00 I agree with you 100% that you don't have to like something even if it is the biggest thing in the world. Everyone's tastes differ but what I do think is even if you don't like something, that doesn't mean you can disrespect it. I don't expect everyone to like BTS. If their music is not your music, so be it. However, a lot of people kind of neglect their hard work and don't respect the influence they've had and that's annoying. Not talking about you of course but other people I mean.

Sunbae is a Korean word for senior, or somebody who has been doing something longer than you, in context for this video its someone who was in the music industry longer. But it can be used for example: a student who is in a higher grade level or a Co-worker who has been present in the company longer, or someone in a higher position, but higher ups are called by their title like "manager" or "president". The "nim" at the end is a way to make the addressment more formal or put some respect on it.
