My absolute favorite thing about the fight is how Falin's human body is animated as Leading her movements. The way she twists before the tail strike, or moves her shoulders in anticipation of her wings...it looks so COOL! And on top of that, it actually takes time both to move parts of a body that large, as well as send the signals through the nervous system that call for that motion. This is an example of Falin's human parts, being smaller, also being "ahead" of her new draconic body. Love it so much.

My personal favorite example of this is when she winds back her arm while her wing does the same only moments after, and that even though the doesn’t ball her hand into a fist, the claw on her wing does it instead. Honestly I kinda wish Laios hadn’t interrupted. I love seeing winged characters actually using them like arms

Her expressions are also inedible. Hauntingly full of rage. That comes from Kui, but the animators did a good job of carrying the momentum of her expressions through each shot. And I especially liked the shift in expression from interest to rage when Kuro bit her hand. I also just noticed her eyes are wide open the whole time. Perhaps her eyesight is better as a dragon? Or the dragon part made her forget how to squint to see better?

The way it claws at the wall and fails to get a hold on it at first, the weight of it all… I had to rewind the episode a few times to get over how good it looks. Also, I think it’s a great character design detail (or creature design ?) how much more gaunt and boney the dragon part of Falin looks compared to the red dragon, it really lends to this idea of something not meant to exist.

The lean body of the new dragon form is particularly attributable to the fact that mad mage had considerably less dragon flesh to construct the chimera body to begin with since a significant amount of dragon meat was consumed by Laios party and revive Falin. thank you for pointing out toshiro's background!! a lot of people seem to think his fight with laios is purely a "autistic man who can do no harm gets bashed for being autistic" moment when really its such a bare bones analysis. both of them struggle with communication, both of them are acknowledging that through fists and shouts, and both of them end it on a better note. they never TRULY hated each other and i don't like how this scene made a lot of people villainize toshiro and subsequently baby laios purely because of his autism being seen as an excuse for anything remotely bad about him. they're so nuanced, i wish more people approach them with open minds
@cassdraws066 ай бұрын
yeah, I think one flaw that people have when takling about this scene is posing one method of communication as better than the other when, for each person, the one they've learnt is usually the best. i think the anime and manga do a great job expressing both perspectives as right, but with flaws. It's not that Laios is wrong or that Toshiro is wrong, but that they clashed.

For them, the scene between Laios and Shiro hit extremely close to home, as they had lost many friends who admitted to them the same things. That they had tried to "drop hints" that they didn't like my partner, but never just directly told them. After learning about all they've gone through, you summarized so well about how Laios associates himself with monsters more than people. My partner has explained to me that throughout their life, they often times called themselves other creatures, such as Goblin, as it felt more fitting than being a human. When someone's all over you and won't leave you alone, and you try to softly say not now give me some space without hurting their feelings and they don't hear you, and don't even say your name right... and then they get mad, that's rough. I'm in a situation like that now, actually, with a coworker who's gone and told me stories about getting back at people who've been rude to them and it's just really argh. The idea that there's one way to communicate that is good and right and all others are obviously horrible and only favored by people who are Just Wrong is simply not correct. Immideately critiques the creature design => "SO COOL... That said it has too many unecessary parts. Has feathers AND scales?" Falingon is overdesigned 🤣 5- Finally: Everyone that survived is/were at Laios party, or saved by a member of Laios party => Chilchuck hid with Mickbell beneath Senshi's pan; Holm heard Marcile warning and protected himself.

Respectfully, I think he went over the line by being condescending towards people who are rightfully tired of this ship being forced on them by a certain subset of the community. As someone who has read the manga multiple times you can believe me when I say that there is far more evidence that Marcille is not romanticlly interestedin Falyn than there are. In a previous post I have already mentioned that I would not have problem with people shipping if they were not so toxic about insisting it's an undisputed fact. As for our green armadillo friend... by also insisting that Farcile must be canon without even entertaining the counter arguments and instead belittling comments, I have to call into question his observational skills for the rest of the show. Who is to say that he also did not emblemish other points he made in his videos. Unfortunate loss of credibility and I really hate to say it because I still believe he is a talented individual.

Nobody is forcing anything onto you. You just have a different headcanon to the rest of the fandom. It happens. No need to play victim about it.
@mariaantonia-op8qc6 ай бұрын
@@vincentmokujin8117 Also respectfully (no sarcasm), even if you don't like the ship or simply doesn't interpret their scenes as romantic I think is just as condescending to try and imply they aren't deliberately written in a way that can be read as that. Farcille is the biggest ship in the fandom for valid reasons, it is a reasonable interpretation of their relationship to say that they do have feelings for each other even if nothing ends up happening between the two. There's plenty of toxic shippers like in every fandom, yes, but I feel most people get defensive about the ship precisely because it IS presented in the narrative as a clear possibility so it's tiresome to see people saying it isn't meant to be read that way, and that it's somehow a wrong interpretation just because they don't ship it. I get that it's also tiresome to have a ship don't care about being pointed out all the time and have your own interpretation of their relationship being platonic being beaten down, I get it, but I must also ask that you understand that the signs are there, they are in the dialoge, in the framing, in the character's actions, so even if you don't interpret it that way I don't think it's fair call into question the observational skills of people for noticing those signs and pretend they are seeing things that don't exist. Anyway, hope you have a good day.
@vincentmokujin81176 ай бұрын
@@mariaantonia-op8qc First of all, thank you for being civil. It is refreshing after the vitriol I got from Farcille shippers at various other platforms. Sandersystreams123 might say I'm playing victim right now, but I truly believe that my past experience with just about anybody who ships these two characters is a big part of why I genuinely can't stand it. The other reason is that I simply see no indication in the story that it is true. As you mentioned maybe I really miss interpreted some of the scenes and if you would indulge me, I would be interested if you could list the examples you believe are a genuine giveaway. For now let me list the parts that have convinced me that there is no romantic attraction between them. The definitive example in my mind is the succubus chapter. If Marcille was truly in love with Falin, how come the succubus transformed into General Halleus, a character from one of the love novels Marcille reads? The latest omake revealed the characters name and now we also definitively know the characters gender since it's hard to tell with elves being androgynous. The other important one is at the end when Marcille is drowning and her life flashes before her eyes. The last image she thinks of is both Touden siblings, not just Falin. That to me implies she cares about them on the same level. To that end there is a minor example from within the Golden Land arc where Marcille is shown being flustered while showin Laios the dress. And now for the actual reason why I really don't like this ship. To me it undermines Marcille as a character. Allow me to explain. One of the defying characteristics of Marcille is her fear of outliving the people she cares about. To me the main driving force behind why she desperately wants to save Falin is not something as simple as love but something much more intricate, combination of different factors, chiefly her trauma. In my mind simple romance make Marcille so much less interesting and at the end of the manga I believe it is shown that Ryoko Kui thought so too. Because it's genuenly one of the best climaxes of a story I have read in a while. That's it. Sorry for the long post and thanks again for your civility. Like I mentioned I would be interested in your take. Have a nice day.

I must be honest with you, I'm only reading the manga up to where the anime is adapting them so outside of the chapters covered by the anime I haven't read it. All I have to go by is what's shown in the anime and the incredible amount of spoilers I got, now counting with the spoilers I got from your reply as well dhsaudadsa, but I don't have any problem with spoilers at all, they make me more interested to see how the story gets to that point, so don't worry about it if you decide to reply again. This is going to be so long and I'm so sorry, but here is my take on why I, personally, really like this ship: I agree that if Marcille's motivations to save Falin were JUST romantic it would undermine her as a character, but that is what makes the ship SO GOOD, the fact that it isn't just that, that it isn't a easy, straightforward romance. Marcille's complicated relationship with death is so interesting and one of the things I'm most excited to see more of in the anime. Her fear of losing the ones she loves to time is so heart wrenching and her falling for someone with a shorter lifespan the same way her mother did, the anxiety of ending up just like her mother was when her father died... is a parallel and overall a concept I love to think about and feel would bring even more complexity to her character, not take from it, after all having complex fears and feelings and being able to confront and surpass them makes not only for a good romance, but for good character writing as well. Although It’s also why I don't feel any romance between these two is possible during the main story, since she's still learning how to deal with her fears in a healthy way. One thing I really love about this show as a whole too is exactly what you said happens when she's apparently drowning??? (another thing I didn't know and am looking forward to now dhaudasd) She cares about Laios JUST AS MUCH and I think that's both beautiful and doesn't take at all from the ship. If there's a trope I genuinely dislike with romance stories is when they make the love interest the only person that metters in the character's life, like this type of love is the most important, the only one that matters. Marcille loves her friends so much and she would do anything for the ones she loves, her feelings towards Falin being romantic or platonic doesn’t change that, I just think that if there were repressed romantic feelings for Falin on her part alongside that undeniable love she already has it would make for juicy conflict and character exploration outside of them just having good chemistry and being cute together, but again, any actual romance plot would have to happen after the story ends, the show isn't even about romance in the first place, it's just that the foundation for a possible romance IS there (Out of topic, but I'm not a fan of marcille with Laios romantically precisely because the story focuses on their bonding more, even if it sounds counter intuitive.I just prefer the main casts to focus on this familial love and bonding instead of having romance shoved in there. Falin and Marcille work for me because they already developed that bond in their school years and the story can explore their feelings for each other even with Falin being away most of the time just based on that foundation while also focusing on Marcille’s relationship with the others that are directly on scene with her, same for Laios and Falin's relationship, I love the siblings even Falin isn't there most od the time). On your other point, I don't think the succubus scene confirms there's no romantic feelings there either, I always hate getting into the discussion of the sexuality of characters when it isn't explicitly stated because it just turns into a endless fiesta of headcanons and projection, but I'll just say that it's normal for even lesbians with basically no interest in men at all to have fictional man crushes, Marcille could very well be Bi, or something else, but that doesn't matter as much, the main point for me is that it would make sense for a succubus to capitalize and transform into that idealized, unrealistic vision of a crush we have, it’s something that would immediately make you follow it without many questions and to me it makes more sense then using very conflicting feelings that would make someone stop and reflect about themselves and their fears (but again, I have NOT read this chapter just seen some images and memes so I could be wrong with how the succubus work, my bad). Now the second thing I wanted to talk about (I'm so sorry this is so long) Is how the story presents their relationship on camera, or manga panels in the case of the manga, because it also points to romance in a more subtle way. It isn't a novel fact that outside of what just happens on a scene the way it is presented also matters and changes our view on the actions done, well the thing is... they use a lot of signaling that is usually relegated to romance in the scenes with these two. To actually go into detail I would have to have the clips and images to show or else it would turn into even more yapping with me trying to detail a whole visual scene with just words, but to summarize: The way they focus so much on touch, a lot of times even slowing the scene to let it breathe for a moment and bring up the importance of the action; the way the point of view shots of them looking at each other is presented; the looks; the way they met and the flashbacks both to their academy days and to when they met again some years later and even the music used is VERY romance coded. I'm by no means a filmmaker, but I'm studying to be one so I would like to think I can spot these things. Just to finish things off, thank you very much if you actually read all that, I want you to know I'm not trying to change your thoughts on the ship, you can very much not like it for your reasons and not see it happening in any way, it isn’t canon after all, but it is fun to talk about these things and analyze characters. Again, thanks and sorry for the enormous reply.

the laios toshiro fight is one of my fav scenes in the whole manga! i'm not autistic, but i love a lot of people who are, and the scene really hits when you've (accidentally) hurt someone in the same way toshiro (also accidentally) hurt laios.

I think it's important to note that Kabru didn't *casually* consider murdering Laios, but rather *instinctively* did so after being PTSD triggered by monster stuff. it's a thought about how to protect himself from the memories of the Utaya disaster, that he then shuts down and doesn't act on.

I have to agree. This is my favorite episode so far. I'd imagine that's the case for a lot of people since it's absolutely packed with some of the most stand-out moments. Laios and Shuro's fight has to be my favorite moment of the manga, as it hits close to home, having lost friends because I couldn't pick up on their social cues. Even with that beautiful moment of storytelling, the next episode will cover my favorite chapters of the manga, so I'm excited.

I’ve been looking forwards to this bit of the adaptation for a while - the chimera fight really delivers, but I’m super glad the human interactions of the latter half got the spotlight they deserved. The fight between Laios and Shuro is painfully relatable, and it’s rare to see something that feels so real (I’ve definitely been in both of their shoes before) while still being sympathetic to both sides.

when i was watching the fight/argument at around 11:12, I was trying my best not to cry.. As an autistic person I always grew up with people being angry at me and describing me just like how Shuro described Laios, that specific moment was so real to me and it's also another great example of Laios having to deal with the fact that he is neurodivergent (AT THIS POINT I CONSIDER HIM CANONICALLY AUTISTIC IDC) I also love the fact that they took his "silly autistic guy with a special interest" character trait a lot more seriously, and portrayed how someone in the neurodivergent spectrum might struggle in making friends and maintaining relationships in general anyways, great video !!! love your dedication and attention to detail :D

Never apologize for video length, because every moment of these is a delight, haha. (Though from an editing and sanity perspective I totally get why you'd wanna keep some brevity). Loved that little gag of Business Casual Kabru. (And general appreciation for your jokes/commentary on him in these videos overall, because they very much give the impression that you've got a solid grasp of his character, even when you're keeping things spoiler-free. The manga is pretty slow and deliberate revealing what his whole deal is and he's constantly lying through his teeth, so his motives and personality are often misunderstood, even by people who finished the manga).

One detail I love about the animation this episode is how it's ambiguous whether or not Falin is attacking because of orders or because she is defending herself. Almost all of her actions are reactive, and she often looks confused at being attacked. The ninjas would've naturally attacked her on sight like the harpies, so it makes sense she'd kill them. But when Falin lands she's smiling and doesn't go after anyone else, they attack her first. We hear her cry out in pain when hit, and her eyes change form calm to angry before striking Kade with her tail. When she sees the kobald Falin actually reaches her hand out, almost as if she's about to pet a dog, before he bites her. In reaction her expression changes and its then she attacks him. With the undine she looks memorized by it's beauty, until it stabs her. So she of course stabs back. Falin's eyes go back to looking human when she's reaching out to Laios for help, but the attempt to reach back is cut short by Kabru. There's an argument Marcille understood Falin best when she said she's "just confused". An attempt to deescalate the situation may have prevented more deaths. 9:52 I appreciate this breakdown. I'm fully with you here and love this attention to detail

They actually got me freaked out for a good portion of this episode, not so much that I forgot resurrection existed but the fact that they started with killing off comparatively minor characters so I thought we were doing a "wipe the floor with a bunch of people to establish how terrifying she is" moment. That's just a testament to the original writing pacing, but holy crap the *ANIMATION* this episode. And you're absolutely right that I think they did a fantastic job portraying Laios as canonically autistic and how that clashes with cultures that rely on subtle social cues. I honestly think he's some of the best autistic representation I've seen in media.

I get Laios so much in this episode. Falin looks cool as fuck (but it's hitting that this happened to her), and it's soulcrashing to see how much he loved Shuro while he secretly despised him. It's a fear I've had most of my life, although through bullying, learning to stick to "my people", and asking for clarifications I've learned to avoid it... But yeah. Just say something! If you raise that your other cues aren't working, just explain your problems! Laios is such a nice passionate guy, and it sucks how much judgement he gets while he's out there giving so much of himself.

Falin is gorgeous as a beast and you know I never noticed Shuro there but you're right it being him and Marcille staring as Falin shows off her Mexico t-shirt underneath the white shirt really helps nail home that they both feel the same about her. the episode was so good and your analysis made it even better!! there's too many scenes in this episode that i liked, but ones that stood out to me the most is when kabru tried attacking falin. everytime he landed a hit i went "OUCH" and also "HELL YEAH" despite knowing his efforts are useless (well, not completely, the fact that it didn’t work is also good information!) other than that it's definitely the hurried sequence where falin tries to escape, the animation is just so heavy and frantic that it really feels like a very large creature is cornered and is trying to leave by clawing through everything. thank you for crediting the animators as well as the lovely commentary!

The more I watch DUNMESHI the more I see myself on Laois. Very easily excitable on his hyperfixations, surprisingly very knowledgeable on certain niche topics, has difficulty discerning social cues, prefers straight-forward/transparent communication, highly values certain practices that some often deem trivial (ie taking care of one's self). Granted, I still havent gotten an official diagnosis for myself yet since i dont have that kind of luxury at the moment, but I truly do understand him, and I feel kind of at ease with how he is represented in a more positive light than ridiculing the way he is.

I'm just going to say this, Falin and Laios are cut from the same cloth. And Falin-Marcille relationship is similar to Laios-Shuro's, the difference is that Marcille completely accepted Falin affection and returns it.

I think it's telling that Chilchuck gets along with Laios better than Shuro does. Probably for the reason that Chilchuck will not hesitate to tell you how he feels about something. Laios actually calls Chilchuck "Chillu" sometimes and he gets away with it.
@praxis-cat8706 ай бұрын
Yeah, Marcille is also like Chilchuck in that she's very open about her wants and preferences, which I think speaks to why Laios gets along so well with her and Chilchuck, while Namari and Shuro were more reserved. Namari was open about her desire to engage in more money-oriented tasks in the dungeon but I don't think she ever explained to Laios *why*, which is vitally important to him.

My favorite part of this episode was when they fully revealed Falin's new form. They panned over what was originally a still frame in the manga, showing the monsters and the carnage but not giving your eyes the chance to fully look at it. In my mind, that really portrays how you might process a terrible scene like that in reality.

Too long?? I can't get enough of your DunMeshi Analysis videos. Why would I complain. Anyway, this episode is probably my current favorite of this series. I love how the anime portrayed Falin in this mini-boss fight as someone so dangerous yet so beautiful. Her inhumane scream and the way her body moved looked and felt so large and intimidating, The interactions between Laios and Shuro and how different they saw things, and the way Kabru snapped when he said how many lives must be taken for this one person. The directing and the animation left me in awe. I love this episode so much.

I really liked this episode not only was the story beats really well executed the characters details as mentioned before were spot on. You can tell the writing of these characters isn’t what you’d expect particularly with Laois a lot of how he acts reminds me of someone who is on the spectrum he kinda acts like a version of my eldest sibling. Hell in the next episode he does these little hand movements to get prepared to bark like a dog. And that kinda made me also think he could be seen as on the spectrum

one thing i sorta noticed, but i'm not sure if it's real or if i'm imagining it; during their fight, Shuro and Laios seemed to be animated just slightly differently. Shuro got things like exagerated impact frames, the camera following his movement a bit more, drawn out rebound, jump cuts, and so on, whereas Laios' hits back seemed to be laid out with a steadier frame-rate and consistent camera movement, and a plainer focus on his "improper" techniques like fish-hooking and hair pulling. In short... Shuro was being more formal and deliberately presented, whereas Laios was being blunter and more frank about his actions. ahh, parallels
