On the last ride I decided I wanted to get a valve clearance check done a bit early on the ZX-10R since the engine had previously been apart for a valve issue. With Fall riding right around the corner, I decided to get at it the very next day.. Here's what we found

I remember watching your first vid about the retainers and the valve dropping, I also switched the retainers on my gen 1 for gen 3 retainers, disturbing to learn what happened to yours again! It's such a weird thing, I can only imagine there are hundreds of bikes out there running fine with broken retainer fragments under the tappets, and actual issues arising from it seem pretty rare, still you don't want that nagging feeling that something could go wrong AGAIN!

It's something that really causes you to worry because there's no sign that there's any problem until all of a sudden there's a HUGE problem. Then there's all of the ones that I didn't change this time.. Who's to say they didn't crack the very next day? Needless to say, this bike is going to be running a VERY short valve inspection schedule

I feel your pain. My valve gave out on my 06 last season and ended up putting a whole in my piston. I'm at the stage now where I'm waiting on crank bearings and new valve retainers. Which makes me ask what retainer are you using now.

When this first happened and an intake valve dropped, I replaced them all with 3rd gen retainers. That was the agreed upon "Fix" for this. I replaced these two with 3rd gen parts as well. If I eventually go back in there again, I may look to Kibblewhite or something along those lines.

Hey there bud, I’ve got an 05 Zx10R with 28k on it. I noticed a little vavle tick at low rpm around 2500 to 3000rpm I’m thinking of replacing the valves and keepers and springs just to be safe. What aftermarket keepers to you recommend? Vavles as well for that matter

I've really only read that some 1st gens are affected by the valve issues. I've personally never seen any. It may only be 2nd gens that are really affected by it. If I had to guess why, maybe stronger springs that the retainers can't handle? Not sure. Either way, if I were you, I'd get in there with the intentions of just doing a valve set and get eyes on it to begin with then go from there. As for aftermarket parts, I know Kibblewhite has retainers but I've never looked into anything beyond that. I've pretty much decided I'll cut the bike loose before it comes to that
