I'm right there with you Pete'... even though I'm in Australia lol. Same things happen here, people come to you wanting a race engine assembled, after god knows who machined it for god knows what purpose. If you give them what they ask for & it fails- YOU are deemed the biggest CAaNT. I never just assemble something, don't trust someone else with your reputation.

Pete you aren't kidding about the Dart blocks being "rough". Every one in the past few years, especially the Windsor blocks have been so far out, we've set them up in the Tobin Arp line bore to get them close before attempting to get to finish size on the hone.

Simply as a mechanic, I refuse to work on stuff others have started. The moment I see parts in the seat or hear "Well it's been at so-n-so's shop and they're unable or unwilling to finish the job." or whatever, pick your excuse, everything stops. No more conversation or roll it right back out the shop. I could care less about the money. Not because I don't need it. No, I don't need all the headache and grief that comes with the job. Normally, there's a good reason the other shop couldn't or wouldn't finish the job, and normally it's not the "job" that's the problem. Normally it's the customer in a situation such as that. But since I'm the boss, I have that "luxury". But on the other hand, I don't make anyone take that job either.

It's good that Dart leave as much metal as possible there for good shops to be able to work with, so the first life cycle of the engine can have better-then-factory tollerances and longer lifespan under hard use. Align Boring seems to be skipped by many people, even rebuilding a stock passenger vehicle engine can benefit from it, in reduced friction losses of the crank, and reduced vibration from crank flex, freeing up power that would otherwise be lost as heat. It's one of those things that make engines last longer and use less fuel at cruise, there is never any downside to having it correctly done. It's as essential as an acurate dynamic balance of the crank assembly if you want to spin a motor to high RPM's.

I’d be curious to know how the engine owner reacted when you told them about how much work would be required to make this engine right??

Sometimes saying no is the right thing to do, even if it pisses the customer off. I'll never forget telling the bigwig friend of my boss (owner of the company I work for) that I wouldn't put his bald summer tires on his fancy Infinity G35. I don't think he was used to people telling him no, especially an 18 year old kid. (at the time) He tried hard to get me to do it, but that was just a waste of his and my time. He left with his snows on, having a bit fit on the way out the door.

With respect to the bore and hone job and your statement about honing it again no matter, so that you know it will seal - if you use a profilometer (misspelled?) to check the finish, then it should seal, as long as long as the diameter is right, correct? It sould save you time and the customer money.

I picked my block up from the machine shop, went to start putting it together and my main clearances were whack. I reached out to the guy and told him the mains had taper. He picked the block back up to fix the issue, and found that it was his dial bore indicator that was damaged and was entirely too repeatable. Dodged a bullet there. Do you have any advice for someone looking to upstart an engine machine shop?

Your video was very good. The line hone can fix a lot of weird stuff. A year or so ago I had a guy bring in a 6.0 Chevy block. He was building a stroker with a 4 inch stroke crank. His clearances were right at .002 on all of the mains yet the crank would lock up. I trimmed the caps, line honed it, cleaned it and checked it, .002 all positions. Torqued it up and the crank turned perfectly. This block was just a little bit wacky and out of alignment. The line hone corrected the problem.

Not only do I nit take a customers word on its ready to go I don't trust the machine shop (I have 2 I do because they are one man shows) to get me parts that are good. Had an expensive aluminum head one shop ruined by setting it up wrong and milling at an angle. Customer kept blowing head gaskets. Brings ut to me and I can feel a difference taking deadbolts out. I always disassemble by hand to feel things out. Looked at the head and I could see the cut on one side was lower on other by the casting reliefs. Took to the shop sure enough. It was max milled one side and had about 030 more on other. The deadbolts weren't seating proper so they loosened up. Customer had to buy another expensive head and I git subpoenaed to court for the suit against the shops that did the previous work....asshole.

It soothes my soul to see someone putting in this type of effort into their quality control. I used to work for a shop that built 4cyl for midget cars. We had some pretty big contracts. With honing mains and the cam towers we went as far as line honing vertically to prevent flex as our particular hone when run on a horizontal plane liked to oval out the last couple mains. I saw people get fired over using an impact when they should have used a speed handle. Everything had to be done just so. If you didn’t do it the way they KNEW worked. Every time. Without fail. You would receive a talking to and if that didn’t shape ya up you got let go. It was one of the most intense but enjoyable jobs I’ve ever had. Aircraft levels of attention to detail. Thanks for not only sharing quality content but being one of the few willing to do a quality job because your name is on it.
