Just Delicious

Here's an animation I made last spring. It's based on the story "Just Delicious" that was featured in "Scary Stories 3," a book I read all the time when I was little. Freaky, freaky stuff. I know my simple "style" pales in comparison to Stephen Gammell's drawings, but I tried to make it a little more like his illustrations.
And yeah, go read those books, they're for kids, but dammit, they're awesome.

This animation is based of a Mexican(?) urban legend. So lets call this woman, Maria. Maria, lived with a caring, loving husband. One day, her husband bought her raw meat to cook. After she cooked it and tasted it, she accidentally finished it. She was very scared that her husband might do something bad to her. What she did, she went to a church and decided to take a dead persons liver and cooked it. After she cooked it, her husband ate it but not her. Then at night, there's this one entity/spirit(?) that came and asked, "who has my liver?" maria pointed at her husband, then the spirit attacked her husband and took his liver. I think that's how the urban legend went, kinda same as the story.

Here’s the original ending: She told him how she had eaten the liver he bought. She told him how she had crept into the church next door. She told him how she had slit open the belly of the corpse, deftly cut out the liver and brought it home to cook it. Her description was so vivid, her husband could almost see it happening before his eyes. As he listened, he grew more and more angry. Then she told him about the ghostly voice she had heard and he grew more and more fearful. The man was terrified of ghosts. “I’m the one who ate the liver,” he said. “That means she will be coming for me to wreak her vengeance.” He got out of bed and, without a word, he went downstairs. His wife sat in bed, wondering what he was going to do. A few minutes later, she heard his footsteps coming up the stairs again and when he appeared in the doorway, she saw he was holding a knife in his hand. She screamed and screamed. Later that night, the husband crept into the church next door. He approached the open coffin and placed a fresh new liver in the belly of the corpse. Then, he went home and climbed into bed. His sleep was never disturbed again… and nobody ever saw his wife again.

Goth Nerd excellent point, but this story was written in a time when embalming wasn’t that widespread, and depending on the area, some bodies were buried fresh; with the only preparations being a bath for the dead person, perfuming them, grooming them (shaving them, combing their hair), and dressing them in their best clothes, complete with jewelry, a handkerchief wrapped under their chins and tied on top of their heads to hold their jaws shut, and coins on their eyes. Also, the funeral and viewing would take place Only a few days after death, so the bodies would still look like they were only sleeping (apart from their pale skin and lack of breathing), and they wouldn’t smell or stink that soon; so in those times, this story was very plausible, and the husband could have eaten the liver with no bad effects.
