For me…It’s that $65 price that gets your attention with this and the fact that you can go places with this if you wanna invest in this as a regular in your lineup. You can pull a nice retro/fun sound out of this with some EQ/compression without that $250 Shure 55 price tag.

Absolutely

I couldn’t believe how heavy that thing was!! Impressive is all I could think. And! It sounds really good!

Yeah it’s seriously a great one at the price

I'm a sucker for cool looking mics, but also want them to sound decent. When I first got into mics I soon acquired a Shure Super 55, which is easily the best looking mic in that category. But I didn't love the sound and didn't use it enough. I missed the look so I got a 5 Core one, and I quite like it (they're only $33 right now on Amazon). After Mike Newman's review on the Memphis Blue it went back on my curiosity list, and to my ears it sounds purtee purtee purtee good.

Agreed…especially with that low end boost and compression

I am guessing that, that style of mic was originally used with a floor mic stand and the proximity of the cable jack to the mount was intended to provide a streamlined profile for stage presence. But hey that is just a guess. I do like it though. Was wanting a mic like this and had my eye on the 5 core chome/blue and it seems to be no longer available. would be interesting to see how the Memphis blue sticks up against the 5 core and the Super55. Thanks for sharing everyone! Great to see teamwork in action!

Shure sells a mic arm extender to help combat the XLR cord clearance issue - think its like $20 on Amazon

I have a few but don’t love using them. Luckily this mic was a borrow lol

I picked one of those up a few years ago and I like it. It's pretty easy to build an adapter for the boom arm but that's about the only downside for me.

Yeah I’m sure if I was keeping it I could get it rigged up. But for the video…JUST DO IT!

I think it will look and work well on a straight mic stand and a female vocal....

90° XLR adapter needed. Does your boom arm support the weight though.
@ObscureMics5 күн бұрын
Weight yep. My 90 degree xlr cable doesn’t sit the correct way for the mics xlr port

@ObscureMics I have one that let's you pivot it 180° so the right angle can point either way. Then I was looking at the washer looking surround on your boom arm 5/8 threaded area, and that may be the deal breaker anyway.

Well, my ears will pass on this beastie for voice. Missing too much low and mid low action. The top side is clear, I will give it that, and it is not sibilant. AND, you can drive tent pegs with it when you go camping, no additional charge. Monoprice is hit and miss. I have a few of their mics, and the one that stands out is the Monoprice 600800 - I actually own a few of those. We ran blind tests in the studio and across the board, folks were stunned with how good that mic sounds on various vox and overheads.

@@ObscureMics i buy old 55s for cheap and put the super55 capsule in it since the design hasnt changed since 1950. It all fits. Capsule is $119. Ive gotten 55s as cheap as $25 for busted up ones

$65?!? Hell. It's $153 here in Canada on Amazon and Walmart. And with the exchange $65 us should be $92... I hate it here.

I think with EQ this mic can easily be a daily driver. The key to boomarming one of these it to hang it. That's why the back looks the same upside up or down. The aesthetic thing Pyle and Monoprice (and most other "retro" mics) get wrong is the finish. Fingerprinty mirror chrome looks like plastic. First thing I'd do with one of these is take some 1200 grit to it and satin up that finish. Then it'll look classic. The look is an interesting combo of a Shure 55's profile, and an Astatic WR-40's face, on top of an Electro-Voice 630's switch neck. It is all 1950s mics at once!

I must agree to disagree. To me it's thin and cold sounding.

An ugly boxy 55. It actually sounds like a vintage 55 lol. Thin in the bottom end. Id grab that to turn into another lamp. Lol
