I took a flight with Aeroflot onboard their Boeing 777-300ER in Business Class to see just what they're like these days, and if they've finally managed to shake off their image of days gone by.

As a 41 year old female Nigerian, I used to fly Aeroflot from Lagos via Moscow to Vienna on my yearly summer holiday with my mum. In the 90s, they were quite good when it came to baggage allowances, cheap, efficient and reliable talking from an African perspective 😊.

His perspective is his own bias British perspective. You could tell he had a superiority complex about everything Russian. Those British anglos have always had a negative view towards anything Soviet/Russian. Same people that tried to bring the Russian for the last few decades. I would guarantee that anyone else who flew Aeroflot, that is not British, would have good things to say about the airline.

@@agustin509 But he's right, you know. Aeroflot was a total mess from late 80's to late 90's. I have nothing to compare it with though since Aeroflot was the only airline i used at that time. I don't know what BA or Lufthansa for instance looked like back then. But Aeroflot 30 years ago and Aeroflot today are like North Korea and Switzerland.

In Aeroflot I am satisfied with everything but PRICES!!! It is simply to expensive to pay BUD - SVO direct 400 USD over 180/160 with transit in either AMS or CDG. Rarely (extremely rarely) Wizz Air to VKO for 80. Prices there and back of course. My friend from Russian embassy flew direct to Moscow with Aeroflot and says aircraft was overcrowded. So, are Russians ready to overpay that much to fly direct?

I recently flew Vladivostok - Moscow with Aeroflot in Airbus 330. Holiday time, so completely packed. 9-hour flight, catered as an international flight. Economy class. Meals entirely respectable and on a par with anyone else. Service and facilities quite respectable and clean, staff professional. What I remember most, though, is that the kids on holiday were so very well behaved. No yelling or trying to run around. A few years back, I also flew Hong-Kong to Moscow with them. Quite acceptable.

Thanks for reviewing Aeroflot. I flew last year from Istanbul to Moscow after flying Turkish Chicago-Istanbul. Let's add, I was 4 months pregnant and had my 4 and 2 years Olds. Aeroflot crew were much more helpful than Turkish. Food was great, crew provided toys, blankets and pillows. Once we landed, airport staff took my luggage all the way to passport control. Overall, awesome airline

You know Noel, it was my flights onboard their IL-86s/TU-154s that fuelled my love for aviation. Throughout the 90's I was lucky enough to regularly travel on Soviet built aircrafts, flying LHR-SV0-LHR - when I was a child. Those experiences created this deep devotion that I have towards Aeroflot. I still have their timetables back from 1991 onwards and their inflight magazines. It is indeed notable to me how they have immensely improved over the years. But I must admit, I would do anything to go back and experience SU back in the 1990's - they were just so unique!

I've flown on that particular 777 (named after Pushkin) several times. In fact, I've sat in the very seat that you did on this flight. I'm an American who lives in the Russian Far East, so I fly Aeroflot very frequently between Vladivostok and either New York or Miami (with a connection at SVO). I've generally had a great experience with them over the past 8 years. Their economy and comfort class are quite good, but the business class is hit or miss. The hard product on the a330 is outdated. It is quite alright on the 777. The new a350 business class hard product is much better, as it is 1-2-1 and has doors. The soft product is excellent across the board, though it's been diminished a bit due to COVID. I'd fly Aeroflot over any American-owned airline any day.

Besides the car tires being loaded into the aisle of a Yak-40 that I mentioned above, I've had my dinner (a boiled chicken breast in a plastic bag) thrown to me by an IL-86 flight attendant standing 4 seats away; been invited into the cockpit of a TU-154 to have a shot of vodka as the plane took off with me sitting in the cockpit jump seat, still holding my shot glass while I tried to find the seat belt. No, I'm afraid Aeroflot was not a "great" airline when I flew it back in the 90's!! And don't get me started on the crowds all trying to buy tickets and check their bags at the same time, or the crowds at the bottom of the aircraft stairs, all trying to push their way onto the plane....... What an experience!

I sincerely enjoyed watching this vid. In 1979 I spent 15 days touring the USSR including Moscow, Kiev, and Leningrad. Flew on two different aircraft and also rode on a sleeper train. I really had to laugh when the FA told you to keep the salt and pepper shakers. There was only one class on service on the aircraft in which I flew. On one flight, the inflight service consisted on an approximately 1 ounce of a vile smelling mineral water served in a little glass. Shortly after the glasses were picked up, there was an announcement in Russian. Our guide informed us there were six glassed missing, and that the FA would be coming down the aisle for the rest. Assume they got them as otherwise I might still be on the airplane. ROFL. Many funny stories about that trip and the differences between Aeroflot and ANY OTHER companies at that time. My lifetime career was in the US airline company for almost 45 years.

I still have a picture somewhere of the plane on the tarmac at Gatwick (would be interesting if someone could identify it). I remember we had to refuel in Riga, which was part of the Soviet Union back then. Didn’t Aeroflot have an excellent safety record in the 80s, or was that all propaganda?

From what I know, Aeroflot had a similar safety record to Western carriers back then. Keep in mind, back then everyone crashed. There were major air disasters almost yearly. in each large nation. The thing with Aeroflot and the USSR was they lied about it all the time, so everyone including the Soviet people assumed the Aeroflot crash rate was much higher than western crash rates.

I don't really remember any major aeroflot incidents in the 80's. However, a big issue for Aeroflot is that they handled all of USSR flights. It's not like in US where you had Delta, Pan-Am, American Airlines etc.So they might have registered more incidents overall. Especially consideirng the conditions they had to operate in. Safety records, especially in aviation, are rarely only a matter of the 'operator', you could be a fine airline and a guy in the control tower of a foreign country screws you up.

I flew with Aeroflot London to Accra in the 80s on an IL-62M to Moscow and a TU-154 to Accra via Tripoli and Cotonou. The IL-62 was like a rocket-ship on take off from Heathrow, but the TU154 was a heap of junk, bits falling off everywhere...especially on Tripoli's very bumpy concrete runway! Came back to the Moscow from Nairobi on an IL-86, too.

@@michaeldunham3385 I have felt the same often. But counterly if you see the politician bashing video when he went to the Moldovan capital. It made the politicians change the pavement and the broken bits of infrastructure . So maybe subtly he wants the govt to do good for them.

@@travelwithsounak I can't say I've seen that video so can only really comment on the ones I have. I avoid watching anymore because by doing so I'd be indirectly funding him. I'd be surprised if he actually a significant difference in Moldova, point a camera at a politician and they'll often say what you want to hear. Moldova is an extremely poor country so finding issues with the infrastructure isn't going to be much of a challenge and a KZbin video isn't going to alter this. Showing poor people in Russia isn't going to improve their lives either, the only person benefiting is Bald

I've practically forgotten what flying/flying business is like. Lovely video. Interesting that your flight was so expensive, Aeroflot has a reputation of undercutting a lot of SkyTeam long distance fares, at least out of the US. I've only seen two or three videos about Aeroflot, all seem quite positive. As one frequent traveler to another, you were not wearing your shoes during your London takeoff. Bad habit to get into. Little FAA tip I got from them in Oklahoma City one year, always wear shoes for takeoff, (and don't wear synthetic fiber socks, either, like that is possible...) God forbid the plane goes splat on takeoff, you don't want to be running through jet fuel, possibly burning jet fuel during emergency evacuation. Take the shoes off after take off. Just a suggestion, but it does make sense. And believe it or not, I've been doing this for more than 30 years, and I have NEVER had a crash on takeoff. Works every time! Best wishes.

I have just recently found your channels. Thanks for the reivew - it brought back memories of my first flights on Aeroflot as a nine year old on a trip from Australia to visit family. We flew New Delhi - Moscow and after a night in a hotel on to Tallinn the following day. I remember the flight attendant meaning business when addressing passengers but she was very kind to me. The inflight meal consisted of a cold chicken drumstick and a whole cucumber - loved it!

I remember reading articles years back about their crews being forced at times to ask passengers for funds to pay towards parts etc because no one would give them anything without being paid first anymore. Does anyone else remember that?

I've flown Aeroflot a number of times - London to Moscow plus Moscow to Vladivostok, Irkutsk and several other cities. Every flight has been comfortable, n time, with great food, drink, entertainment and plenty of seat space. I'm at the back of the cabin in economy and I'm 6ft 4inches. The flight crew have always been courteous, pleasant and efficient. I've flown with many other airlines and in my opinion Aeroflot ranks as one of the very best.

Got to fly Aeroflot flight from Shanghai to Moscow almost 10 years ago with perhaps one of the oldest 767 then without the entertainment system. But like the legend said, RU flights did fly fast and could take off regardless of the weather (was raining heavily plus strong wind at PVG). In-flight meals were ok and flight attendants smiled all the time. We landed in Moscow with loud applause given by the passionate Russian passengers, however, due to the delay at PVG we missed the connection flight to Helsinki, we were escorted to an airport hotel OUTSIDE the international terminal without any transit visa, did see police with guns around us and the hotel was special in design, that all stairs and elevators were locked unless it became your time to catch the next flight. Staying there for one night and couldn’t expect more for the morning to come so we could get back to Finland - what an experience :)

I flew with Aeroflot back in time. Approximately 2 years ago when tickets on my route were cheaper. Now it worth to fly with 2 transits, instead of 1 but from I would say Aeroflot has quite a good service on interninternational routes and their catering is slightly better than even AF or KLM. I am relatively big (~195 cm guy), so I could tell Aeroflot legroom is also good. It was A320 to Moscow and B738 to REN. The same story on my flight back and also BUD - ICN via SVO with A330 to Korea. Was nice.

Maybe try recording from an angle that doesn’t show the person sitting next to you? If someone asked me if it was okay to record, I’d say no problem because I wouldn’t want to be inconvenient, but I’d still prefer if the person recording had the respect not to show my face. It’s pretty inconvenient, especially since most people pay the extra price for business class because they want to be more comfortable.
