He is the King because during his time of play, he scored goals when it really matters. Scoring the winning goals against opposition even the difference was only one goal. Really enjoyable series you’re compiling, thank you. One point on Cantona’s score, his positioning was definitely greater than 7/10. I’m old enough to have watched him play and highlights probably don’t do him justice. He occupied what is now referred to as the 9 &1/2 role (not quite a 10 nor a 9 but aspects of both) and defences (especially in England) could not deal with him. Centre backs didn’t know whether to follow him into midfield to leave space behind or get a midfielder to drop in on him - neither option worked at stopping him having an impact, his skill and particularly his one touch passing was devastating. I will never tire of watching Cantona’s flicks and back heel passes! He arrived into goal scoring positions at crucial times, because of his outstanding positioning. He could have a quiet game for 89 minutes and bang... Cantona scores... 1-0... against the run of play... unmarked at the far post... how?... just ask Newcastle United fans how devastating the man was, Liverpool in the FA cup final and the many others he scored crucial goals against. His goal tally might not impress like other greats of the game but he didn’t need to concern himself with scoring the 4th and 5th goals of an easily won game - he scored the one of a hard fought 1-0. That’s why he’s King Eric

@@David-cm4ok Yes. The only trouble for him in France is the same for many other players elsewhere who did much more for their clubs than for their countries. Everything we won we won without him, so he cannot expect to have a privileged place in our memory despite his personality and his talent. The other sorry thing concerning him is that it is that personality that closed him the door to our team in 98 (or maybe it is Deschamps like many say): the coaching staff wanted a team, not simply a group of talented players. It worked there, like it worked in 2018, where the player they sacrificied was Benzema. Cantona's destiny makes me wonder sometimes how the Argentinian people see Messi.

Once I (french) met Cantona in a bar in Brest (France). I was with a colleague that was Scottish, she was quite a fan of football! It was a weekday, on a winter day, there was almost no one partying. With my colleague (she was there just for two days) we got shit drunk and we started bar/club hoping. We got into a club at like 1am, and inside there was only like 10 people! I remember my colleague getting all crazy and she was like "OMG, OMG I can't believe it's Eric Cantona..." but with her bad Scottish accent I didn't understood, I was like at her like "What the heck are you saying? err... contaneur??". Anyway, I was also shit drunk and wasn't seeing properly. Didn't recognised who he was so I though they were just casual people at the club drinking. I cheered with them, chitchated a bit, I remember asking "Cantona" stupid casual drunk question like "what's up dude, what you doing in Brest! Working at the harbour?". Then my Scottish friend was insisting that I took a picture of her and the guy and I was like "why do you want a picture with a random dude?". Anyway, I took the picture. The rest of the night is blurry (I didn't had sex with her tho). But the morning after she sent me the picture I took of her with Eric Cantona! And there I recognise him! So, yeah, that's the only famous person I've ever met and that's how it went! And I'm 36, I was a fan of him in my childhood/teen, I mean, he's a fucking legend in France too. Since I'm a teen I also love ManU and it's mostly because of him (and Giggs for no reason that I can remember).

Cantona might not have been the world best (winning UEFA or Euro etc) but he is and will be an icon for Manchester United. He was a thorough professional on the field as he would train thorougly and not skip training because he was a star. But he had a very bad temper and it was this that caused his meltdown, But the temper is there because he was very emotional about playing, the game and people. Cantona would have been a world beater had he got good manager and Agent to manage him. SAF managed him quite well and kept him away from media as much as possible. I feel all Eric Cantona wanted was a human touch to understand his anger bouts and they could be managed. Everyone at Manchester united and England knows how well he played as when he was off due to ban it cost the team a Title, everyone knew it, the man himself, the Manager, the team, the fan and even the EPL winner, but when he came back, he won it. He was the player that the famous class of 92 (Beckham, Nevilles, Giggs, Butt, Scholes) would all look at awe and fear, They would be scared to give a wrong pass as just a stare from him, they would know that the pass was not as per how he wanted, thus in a way Cantona was a person then future stars would look at and try to emulate, at least in the perfection of playing, His influence at Manchester united is still there. The #7 is coveted with any player wearing that expected to play as good as Cantona. After him the famous shirt was worn by David Beckham then Cristiano Ronaldo. Thus #7 of Manchester united has high expectations on their shoulders. Eric Cantona is still called "King Eric" at Manchester United. At UNITED, he is a Legend.

He certainly wasn't worlds best or Man Utds, he was the jigsaw piece that was needed at the time. Without him Utd were still a very good team. The no 7 comes from Bryan Robson. @@craigoliver8712 In Manchester united, #7 has been iconic, of course Bryan Robson is one of the great for Manchester united, before Cantona came, Manchester united had not won the title for long time, and he made an impact almost immediately. Also a point is that when Cantona came in there were the young boys who also joined first team, the class of 1992, and seems the arrival of Cantona changed the fortunes. Even Beckham and CR7 both wore #7 and both are iconic to Manchester united, but Eric Cantona had a different flair, he was sort of a guy who would make his own rules.

@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT It's because you cover players with huge fanbases who have great emotion and sentimentality over them. I wouldn't be surprised if your Ronaldinho rating got a lot of flack for this reason (even though unfortunately for him he couldn't quite do as much as the Big Two in terms of stats/consistency etc. so personally I think it's pretty fair but it shouldn't take away from his absolute Legendary Icon status). Even though I really like the scoring system because it really gave a picture of how the players fair, it might be in your best interest viewership-wise to remove it. Another note to consider is that in the past due to not as advanced technology/racism/etc it was probably much more difficult for old legends to acquire a trophy cabinet like today so on that note I would be more lenient towards them e.g. Pele (there's a lot of differences in terms of ability from back then to today as well because of sports research as well; George Best would never achieve his status in today's game with his drinking habits for instance). Teams back then were much more localized in terms of player nationality. Just wanted to point that out. I can't wait for the older players (e.g. Beckenbauer, Pele) review because I wasn't there to see them so they're quite unknown to me.

He had as much influence on the club as greats like,Edwards,Law,Best,Charlton,Robson,Keane,Scholes,Rooney,He his a God like figure to United fans who along with Sir Alex changed the whole mentality and ethos of the club at that time you really need to be a United fan to appreciate the seismic influence he actually had. This video does not take into account the times Eric turned what looked like being a draw or a defeat into a victory and also how he elevated the players around him up to a higher level. Near enough every match going Red of his time will tell you that Eric Cantona is one of the greatest ever to wear the Famous shirt of Manchester United, if you are not a United supporter it really will be hard to grasp what Cantona actually did,His enormous legacy is sealed in the history of the club.

7 Trophies with three Clubs in two different league should at least warrant him 5 points. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still playing brilliantly for AC Milan and so far leads the table in a top flight league like Serie A. So, it's only fair you re-evaluate his ranking after he retires. Thanks for the series

@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT I didn’t say that, but Cantona deserves a lot more than what he got. Numbers are estimates of what the real impact is, his impact on Man Utd and the world of football in general is massive. Definitely an all time great

@@Abood99222 I agree. It's also not reasonable to judge a player who performed consistently when he was on the pitch as having a 4/10 mentality. Pogba has more international success with a WC medal but ask Utd fans which player they feel has the more suspect mentality and they'd likely say Pogba (or they're 🤪). Cantona wasn't as willing to put up with shit from fans & referees as the typical players of his era. Now player power is more evident, as UEFA found out recently. And is there a more iconic player of the Premier league era? I appreciate all of this is quite subjective but he deserves a higher mark, even accepting his personal issues lost him a trophy or 2.

9/10 icon rating?? He's perhaps the greatest footballing icon in the history of English football. Or Beckham, but as a footballing icon it's not close. The 12 days of Christmas is sung by his fans with every thing in it "Cantona". He was a footballer on TV ads in the USA in the 1990s, which was a rarity. There's a motion picture about him. For Christ sake Oasis has a video homage him, long after he retired. The greatest ever manager rates him as his most iconic player. He speaks in countercultural, poetic flourishes. He's known simply as the King. He couldn't even bring himself to wear his kit in a non-iconic manner. He made English fans wave French flags. He made even opposing fans gasp with awe and admiration. Good video here, but go back now and rate him a 10 please. P.S. your trophy score here is way too low for him as well. He pulled a team from mediocrity to dynastic status which, again, the greatest ever manager credits him for. And no, I'm not a ManU supporter.

7/10 is not very generous (or realistic in my opinion) but Eric is unlikely to care about that. He was a man who had enormous impact in the football world and that's how you measure the contribution of players. He had more impact than many high profile players who are probably rated better than him in football - again he would not care about that. The reason he would not care is that although he was a brilliant player, he did not need football or recognition from it. Of course he enjoyed it, but he didn't need it. Football needed him though just like it needs Pele, Maradona, Cruyff etc to feed the hype machine that is generally quite badly under-fuelled. There are not many premier league players who have matched up to Eric's quality during or after his playing days and the premier league is supposed to be "the best league in the world" so again, 7/10 seems an underestimation of his talent. So, he doesn't care but I do, it has to be at least a 9/10 for me. He was a curious mixture of grace and power and excitement for the game with an eye for goal better than most and he inspired all those around him, not many can do that. What I don't care about is the suggested flaw in his character - there was no flaw, he just didn't accept any nonsense from anyone and he should be universally respected for that, not criticised. Yes, he could have done more in the game if he had wanted to, but he didn't want to because it wasn't everything to him especially when asked to compromise his own principles. Some people have greater and wider interests and values than just football - he did football until he got bored of it I think. If the football world was a better place he may well have stayed longer and achieved more in that time.

He is the reason, so many around the world became United fans, including yours truly. Just like George Best before him, he played the game his own way and was often light years ahead of everyone else. As much as he achieved, his talent deserved so much more. Regardless, every United fan owes it to themselves. To look back at what this great man did for us and what he means to the club.

Cantona was the Michael Jordan of the EPL in the 90s. He was the best player in the league and he knew it. His game was not just about goals. He fed a lot of assists to his teammates. Most important of all, when he played, he made all his teammates play even better. Its no coincidence that he won 4 titles in 5 years. Would have been 5 for 5 if not for the Kung Fu kick !
