In another documentary about George Best I saw (might have been one of those "Football's Greatest" ones), he did at one point suggest that immediately after winning the European Cup he was personally hungry for more success and trophies, but he looked around and felt like for everyone else, that victory was the end of the journey, the end of their ambitions. He then stuck around still because of a fondness and loyalty to Matt Busby and the club. Seeing the club's winning qualities decline, his own professional ambitions declined also. I also heard somewhere the suggestion that his "playboy lifestyle" was actually more lucrative for a while than his professional football career. Being a face got him appearance fees, advertisements and god knows what else. Even if that isn't exactly true, it is easy to see how a young man's head might get turned considering football alone wouldn't have been making him rich anyway.

I was lucky enough to see George play [for real] during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was by far the best player I have ever seen. Simply mesmerizing. Even in a star-studded team that featured the brilliance of Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and Paddy Crerand, George was on another level. He could do things with the ball that no other player at that time could do. I became a life-long Manchester Utd fan [even though I'm from the Midlands], grew my hair long and modeled myself on George as a young boy at school. I would wear the iconic blood red long-sleeve Utd shirt [gripping the cuffs, Best-style] whenever I played. I became a pacey left-sided winger and once scored 5 goals in a school match. People use the word 'genius' lightly these days - but nobody in football deserves that title more than George Best. He single-handedly revolutionized the game and inspired countless young boys just like me. Thank you George.

The Manchester United 1960s side, massively underachieved. Boasting three ballon d'Or winners ( Charlton, Law, Best ) . Two world cup winners ( Charlton & Stiles ). A top Scottish international in Crerand. They should have won numerous domestic league titles, FA Cups & at least have made it to at least, three to four European Cup Finals between 1963 to 1969. Two league titles wins. One FA Cup win & one European Cup win is a average return, for a side boasting so much talent... Put *_that_* into perspective with Di Stéfano Real Madrid, five European Cup wins & numerous domestic league title wins. Cruyff Ajax, three European Cup wins & numerous domestic league title wins. Beckenbauer Bayern Munich, three European Cup wins & numerous domestic league title wins. C. Ronaldo four Real Madrid, Champions League Cup wins & one European Cup win with Man Utd & numerous domestic league title wins. Messi Barcelona, four Champions League Cup wins & numerous domestic league title wins & it's obvious how Man Utd & Best, way underachieved, compared to those other illustrious luminaries. Best was an extraordinary player, with unbelievable ball coordinations & balance, which enabled him to pivot on a six pence away from defenders in tight tricky situations. Being brilliantly ambidextrous, allowed him to switch directions at a seconds notice. However, he wasn't able to carry Man Utd to the sort of European dominantion like the players i mentioned.

Don't forget they had to start from scratch after 58 munich disaster. Yet winning 3 balondor plus European cup is impressive

Well they would’ve won in 1966 if Best didn’t get injured for the semis, and they were robbed in the 1969 semi after Law’s goal was incorrectly disallowed. It was more difficult to win league titles back then when playing in Europe as travel was more difficult and squads were smaller.

Man Utd should’ve sold Best to Inter Milan, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in 1969/70. They were at serious fault for dampening the ambitions of a player with such great talent. It’s no wonder he got bored, and overindulged in his playboy lifestyle. The professional regimen at other top European clubs would’ve shaken him down for sure. I think he would’ve got his shit together and won more trophies with these great teams.
