I remember a game where it was mid january or something and it was so damn hot. in the second half Romario moved out to the right wing because it was the only side of the pitch with shade. the ball never came to him, and the game casters were commenting on how lazy he was being, that he had to get involved, and a couple minutes later a play down the left flank, Romario jogs to the box and scores the wining goal with what seemed like his only touch on the ball all game. he left the shade to score!!! baller.

Great video! I'm brazilian and it came across as shock to me when I find out that Romário is kind of underrated in Europe (or, at least, in the UK, it various from each european country)! Here, he's unquestionably seen as one of the greatest of all time! For example: in Brazil, it's pretty popular a debate about who's better: Romário or Ronaldo. In Europe, this type of discussion is pratically non-existent, as Ronaldo played most of his carreer in front of the eyes of european public. However, I think it's important to highlight that the technical level of Brazilian Domestic Football through the 80's and 90's was higher than now, since the exodus of players was not as large as it is today. Even though it was on the late 80's and early 90's that the financial difference between Europe and South America started to turn into a technical difference - as european clubs also did start to buy more and more players from here - it was still a gradual process. So, it's important to keep that in mind, so we don't commit anachronism. For example: I have no doubt that the domestic level of football in Brasil throughout the 80's was far superior than England's. It's not simply "nationalist bias", it's just considering the level of the teams, player and competion in the Brazilian Leagie at the time, and comparing with the rudimentary playing-style and financially broke english game at the time (even though it had great teams, such as Liverpool).
@Rander423 жыл бұрын
until the Bosman law the Brazilian and Argentine teams were much superior. currently more than 1,000 players leave for Europe each year. nobody would watch premier league, or the league without foreign players.
@brushark9090 Жыл бұрын
The issue is most relatively young European football fans think the state of the game was always like it is nowadays: Europe is head and shoulders above everyone else. They still think we were always a farmers league even when our teams were thrashing big European clubs. Just a reminder that it was only in recent years when they overtook as most Intercontinental/Club World Cup winners compared to SA. And these same people still wanna call out Americans for not knowing about anything outside of their garden...

Great video! There is a 90's song here in Brazil about him with the chorus "Train for what? If I already know what to do?" The Baixinho was a folk hero and a true genius on the pitch. By the way, thank you for understanding the differences between being an idol in Europe and a legend in South America. To be the latter it requires more than skill and numbers, you must have a story to tell with your game and your attitude. Romário had it, Maradona too, but a guy like Messi lacks it. And to be honest, as a brazilian, I hope he never gets it, at least not with a white and blue shirt.

To think a player who was consider unanimously great when I was a kid is labelled underrated today... Romario was scary as hell, while Ronaldo was the better player all around, Romario was the best goalscorer, no doubt. Always able to strike the ball from whichever position and be deadly, whether he was using a polished finish like a lob or just hitting it with his big toenail because it was the fastest way to strike a ball. The most amazing thing for me was when he took powerful shots, his strikes were dry and clean, and his leg always looked like a spring after taking one.

Anyone who lived in that time knows it was Romario. All Brazilians knew, all the press knew, all the players knew. Not because he was the OG, but because he was just better. He wasnt as likable as Ronaldo. Not even the coaches at the time liked Romario, they just had to put up with him because of his greatness. To be clear im not saying Romario was just a better scorer than Ronaldo, he was overall better. Its like Messi and CR7, the large majority knows Messi is better, but CR7 is stronger. He is one of the best ever strikers. My dad always said he was the best. Sergio Aguero used to remind me a little of Romario. They both had very similar instincts and styles

Rivaldo should get one of those videos too. One of the best players I've ever seen, yet rarely mentioned today

If he never cheated @ the 2002 WC he would have been held in higher regard, he will be remembered for that more than his ability

I feel that the younger generation are obsessed with stats these days. So if they didn’t watch a player regularly and there isn’t a flashy KZbin highlight reel. They’ll think you’ve lost the plot if you reckon they’re a top player

Ive seen highlights of him versus Baresi and Maldini. He was a beast The penalty box was his playground.

Romario is an example of how coaches sometimes need to accommodate for players. He actually played better when he was rested and had had fun the night before, but he had huge intelligence and skill to carry him. A lot of today's players are just athletes with no skill and that is really sad for the lovers of the game. Some times the game needs to be slowed down. In the Brazil of the past, the players would have fun passing the ball and using their skills and make the other teams run like made until they break through and score. The beautiful game needs to return....
