The scorer of a supposed 1,000 goals, the best player at the 1994 World Cup and perhaps the most ruthless goal scorer of all time, Romario considers himself to be the second greatest footballer to have ever lived.
Here in Britain, the Brazilian legend doesn't seem to be held in quite such high regard. In this video, HITC Sevens assesses the talents and career of the former PSV and Barcelona star and examines his place among the pantheon of all time football / soccer greats.

I remember a game where it was mid january or something and it was so damn hot. in the second half Romario moved out to the right wing because it was the only side of the pitch with shade. the ball never came to him, and the game casters were commenting on how lazy he was being, that he had to get involved, and a couple minutes later a play down the left flank, Romario jogs to the box and scores the wining goal with what seemed like his only touch on the ball all game. he left the shade to score!!! baller.

Great video! I'm brazilian and it came across as shock to me when I find out that Romário is kind of underrated in Europe (or, at least, in the UK, it various from each european country)! Here, he's unquestionably seen as one of the greatest of all time! For example: in Brazil, it's pretty popular a debate about who's better: Romário or Ronaldo. In Europe, this type of discussion is pratically non-existent, as Ronaldo played most of his carreer in front of the eyes of european public. However, I think it's important to highlight that the technical level of Brazilian Domestic Football through the 80's and 90's was higher than now, since the exodus of players was not as large as it is today. Even though it was on the late 80's and early 90's that the financial difference between Europe and South America started to turn into a technical difference - as european clubs also did start to buy more and more players from here - it was still a gradual process. So, it's important to keep that in mind, so we don't commit anachronism. For example: I have no doubt that the domestic level of football in Brasil throughout the 80's was far superior than England's. It's not simply "nationalist bias", it's just considering the level of the teams, player and competion in the Brazilian Leagie at the time, and comparing with the rudimentary playing-style and financially broke english game at the time (even though it had great teams, such as Liverpool).
@Rander42
@Rander42 3 жыл бұрын
until the Bosman law the Brazilian and Argentine teams were much superior. currently more than 1,000 players leave for Europe each year. nobody would watch premier league, or the league without foreign players.
@brushark9090
@brushark9090 Жыл бұрын
The issue is most relatively young European football fans think the state of the game was always like it is nowadays: Europe is head and shoulders above everyone else. They still think we were always a farmers league even when our teams were thrashing big European clubs. Just a reminder that it was only in recent years when they overtook as most Intercontinental/Club World Cup winners compared to SA. And these same people still wanna call out Americans for not knowing about anything outside of their garden...

To think a player who was consider unanimously great when I was a kid is labelled underrated today... Romario was scary as hell, while Ronaldo was the better player all around, Romario was the best goalscorer, no doubt. Always able to strike the ball from whichever position and be deadly, whether he was using a polished finish like a lob or just hitting it with his big toenail because it was the fastest way to strike a ball. The most amazing thing for me was when he took powerful shots, his strikes were dry and clean, and his leg always looked like a spring after taking one.

Romario is an example of how coaches sometimes need to accommodate for players. He actually played better when he was rested and had had fun the night before, but he had huge intelligence and skill to carry him. A lot of today's players are just athletes with no skill and that is really sad for the lovers of the game. Some times the game needs to be slowed down. In the Brazil of the past, the players would have fun passing the ball and using their skills and make the other teams run like made until they break through and score. The beautiful game needs to return....

55 goals in 70appearances for Brazil ,that is a strike rate of 78.5% and he carried Brazil to victory after 24years in the wilderness. The man scored every kind of goal,chipping the goalkeeper from 25 yards on the run,lobbing the goalkeeper from distance,beating the keeper at his near post.Dragging the ball with outside of his boot and then stabbing the ball into the net with the tip of his boot.He had a change of direction and a change of speed,which simply threw defenders off balance.Today,players play far more international games than before.Messi,Cristiano Ronaldo,Neymar and all these big names do not have that kind of average.You should look at a video of Romario scoring with freekicks,the same way he took a penalty he took a freekick.I doubt that there is any footballer who played with more self cofidence.Romario was a player at a different level,the irony is that he was notoriously lazy when it came to training.On the eve of the 1998 World Cup the great Tostao writing in a Brazilian sports magazine said that Romario could have played on the 1970 squad.What more is there to say? Romario is definitely, one of the greatest strikers in the history of the game.

There are some "not quite wright" statements. Romario boyhood club was never Vasco, it was Flamengo as he stated many times, and he always held a special place in his heart for Aemrica-RJ, his fathers club. Romario never fell out with Cruyff. He fell out with all the other players that after the 94 world cup, demanded Cruyff to punish Romario for not returning to Barcelona in time for pre-season, instead preferring to stay in Rio for a self extended holiday, after achieving with his country, as Romario said in a dress room meeting with all players and manager "what none of you have ever done".

He was so good. Such a natural player and poacher. His instincts were other worldly. The issue though was always his attitude. But... it was that edge and attitude that Brazil sooo miss. He was so Brazilian that guy. But not "pc" as odd as that sounds compared to Ronaldo. O sharp witted though... He was various.

If you say Romário is not one of the top 5 strikers, if not of all times, at least from 80's until today, you are missjudging him for one of two reasons: either you didn't see him playing... or you don't understand bollocks of football. Here are some facts about the 'baixinho'' besides the one in the vídeo, as a vain, shy and pale atempt to exemplify is brilliance: 1)Tostão, one of the greatest playmakers of all times, champion with Brazil in 1970 and in some senses compared to Pelé, said Romário could play as a first team in 1970 Brazil, in the place of... Tostão. So in his opinion Brazil front line should be Rivellino (Maradona's hero), Pelé (no comments on this one), Jairzinho (First player to score in all games in a World Cup) and Romário. Tostão btw, is also a journalist and one of the most respected football experts of all times. Also, acording to Tostão, the goal Romário did in 1994 against Holland was one of the most dificult moves he ever saw in football. The way Romário ajusts his pace to compensate for Bebeto's short cross, catching the ball in mid air is brilliant and really rare to see. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3ibpaWrh5d3q6c 2) Romário is considered by several other football experts (the real ones at least) to have been even better than Pelé, the GOAT in person, inside the box. Ronaldo 'Fenomeno' was more fast and versatile, Ronaldinho Gaucho maybe had more flair, but inside the box, Romário was umbeateable. Besides his incredible abillity to shoot and find small gaps, he was ice cold in one-on-ones situation. Wanna link asomething to illustrate what i'm saying. In the vídeo you'll see Romário marked by Amaral (Alexandre da Silva Mariano - Former Brazilian National team player and Bronze medal in 1996 Olympics) on the left wing. Romário then, in the shortest of spaces, performs one of the most amazing "elastico" drible (a.k.a. flip-flap), wich almost breaks amaral spine in two - It's really fast, so pay attention to it. After that he ends marked by 3 Corinthians players and the line, without angle to shoot. So i wanna ask you: what any normal striker would do? Go for the cross? Throw a power kick trying to surprise the goalie? Maybe try the luck and put the ball between goalies legs? Not Romário. The 'baixnho' calmly aproaches the keeper wating for his definition, and when he sees Corinthians goalie trying to close the angle for the shot, he lobs the ball surprising everybody. And then he celebrate as if this was a goal on a friendly match at the beach... And be aware, is not a frontal or diagonal lob. He is almost walking above the line, with no angle at all. Ice cold genius. Take a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXK8koaIg6qXrbM 3) Romário, like Maradona in 86, won a world cup in a not so brilliant squad. Brazil 1994 team was not that magic of team. It strugle in the qualifies, only getting to world cup in the final match against Bolívia. Was the most fragile and least 'flairy' Brazilian squads that end up winning the cup - and even some squads that did not manage to get the title where much better. 1994 Brazil was: Taffarel - (Briliant Goalie, Goalie Trainer of Brazil nowadays), Leonardo - (Former São Paulo and Milan multichampion - Director of PSG - good on the left side, but not brilliant), Aldair - (Best defender we had - Former Roma Captain), Marcio Santos - (Second Sub for Central Defense - Ricardo Gomes and RIcardo Rocha injured), and Jorginho - (Good but not Brilliant - Former Bayern Munich, could play as winger to on the right side); in Midfield, Dunga - (Was not skillfull at all but was a good defender - Ronaldinho Gaucho humilliated him in the end of his career), and Mauro Silva - (Not skillfull but really efective in marking and positioning - Former Deportivo La Corunã Spanish Champion with Djalminha), Zinho - (average to good, important for versatility as midfielder) and Mazinho - (Brilliant - maybe better than Veron on his prime in Lázio. Could play in any position in the midfield). And the Strikers where Bebeto - (Really good but no brilliant second striker) and Romário - (Fucking Genius). If you compare this squad to Brazil's 1958, 1962, 1970, 1982, 1986, 2002 or 2006 you'll see that Brazil 1994 was the least brilliant of them all. But we had Romário... 4) Romário scored between 772 and 1002 goals in his career, depending on the criteria you adopt (I prefer 772, in Oficial Pro Matches). 772 goals in 993 matches, acording to Wikipedia. This is almost 0,8 goals per game, and a better ratio then Cristiano Ronaldo (0,71) and almost equal to Messi (0,79), and we must consider that Messi ratio should get down a little bit in the comming years since normally players have a performance drop in the end of his carrers. So Messi will have to strugle to get a goal ratio similar to Romário. Thierry Henry cited somewhere on the comments as better than Romário, scored 228, and altough a very good player, is definetly way, far way... no... far far far far away, bellow Romário. In another league really. Also, Premier League in late 90's/ early 00's was not good as Brazilian First Division. I was a teenager with a lot of spare time and watched both, so believe me. In the FIFA World Club Championship cited on the vídeo (2000), Corinthians draw agaisnt Real Madrid 2 x 2 (i bet Christian Karembeu still has nightmares with Edilson 'Capetinha' until today...) with a big help of the referee for Madrid, and Vasco (With Romário) humiliated Man United 3 x 1. So fellas, lets cut the crap: Romário was a Genius. Period. P.S.: Sorry for TL. Hope you guys Do R. P.S.2: Congrats on the vídeo, HITC Sevens guy/girl/people. Really good one.
