@@neoqwerty I've always loved making my species at least SOMEWHAT biologically specific, even if a lot of it is based on Magic properties and organs. I got talking with some people about how weird it is that depictions of mermaids STILL tend to lean into the weird pale skin thing, as if they're not always in the ocean and in the sunlight often (I know why that is, it's just hard for me to comprehend why people have time to be mildly racist when designing creatures that shouldn't be burning up from one day of swimming in the ocean). The vast majority of humans who live out around beaches, and the native groups who have EVOLVED to live in those regions and out on the waters, are often much darker in their skin tones, because melanin helps to protect against the sunlight. Thus, unless the creatures live in the DEEP deep depths, they'll probably be darker in coloration. A good example of mammals in the ocean would be dolphins and whales (and their relatives), which are usually darker in color on the tops and sides of their bodies, with lighter colors on the undersides. THATS what most (mammalian) merfolk should be resembling imo. Even sharkfolk would look similar, just not mammals (unless making them mammals somehow works with their main biology). Sorry for the rant, it's just something I care a lot about, as both a fan of animals/plants and character designer
