I suggest you read the histories. Commodus himself was described by Herodian as "well proportioned and attractive, with naturally blond and curly hair." So, if anything, Phoenix is too dark to play the part of Commodus. Of course, it suppose it depends on what the Romans meant when they said "blonde." It could mean a light brown color, not a flaxen haired color like you'd see in Sweden.

This is not the real centre, it was very different also way more monumental than this. The biggest temple of Rome (centre-left) was the temple of Venus, in front of Coliseum. In the centre there was the arch of Titus (0:14) and it is still there, in the beginning of via Sacra, but in 1:17 we see Arch of Septimius Severus (built in 222) like it was the entrance of Senate circular square (this is fantasy), but the arch is luckly still there; the second temple (centre-right) was the temple of Heliogabalus ( do not existed yet at the time of Commodus). All those columns are inspired by the square of Saint Pietro in Vatican, but the Roman Forum never had that wide place. It was full of imperial palaces, in the centre it included a square with so many honorific columns and statues, kind of "trophy square", very important part of Rome. In fact, the real centre was really better and way more richer than this "simple" symbolic picture in cgi. All this goodness destroyed by the time, the gothic war in VI century, stolen marbles, and especially destructions of earthquakes from 801 year and next.

Also Is weird in the third scene of that magnificent cinematography who lack in History Realism though, that we see those gigantic banners and the Gigantic Colosseum and even more Gigantic Temple on the Left and the people are so tiny like thousand myrmidons.. Even the Ancient Egypt was never so Gigantic on every Mighty Structure Structure. The director here scaled too much the Structures of Mighty Rome. More realism and history accurate I find in some none movies but 3D architect footages that explain how ancient Rome was really. But general in none hollywood film I saw Rome in the manner it really was. Of course was the most Mighty and Bright City in the World of the Ancient World after was Babylon but here these buildings are like they ve been built by Titans not humans Lol and hurts so much to my eyes this. Of course the opposite is in HBO ROME that we see a very non suitable Ancient Rome Picture. Even in some PC games I think we could create in somehow Rome with the description you mentioned above but needs so much effort and very careful notes that is very hard to achieve that. Anyway, Thanks a lot for this info friend. I will keep it deep cause Ancient World especially Rome was always a real Magnificent part of my head and I always wanted to have a PC game that has a complete list of Ancient Rome stuff or to see a great movie with history accurate theme of that Mighty City of the Ancient World.

In reality one of Caesar’s servants always travelled in his chariot whispering all along the journey “remember Caesar thou art mortal” Can you imagine how you must have felt crossing the Rubicon and entering Rome in triumph. The entire Pretorian Guard lining the route and legions of soldiers on parade in the forum. The entire city throwing flowers and screaming. And you dismount and ascend the steps of the senate to take your throne as the Emperor of the Empire. And the most powerful man on the face earth of the earth perhaps on oat with the emperor in China. Stalin they say was the most powerful man in all of human history but he never entered Moscow in triumph he never rode a chariot or a white charger that was marshal Zhukov, and the USSR at its zenith was nothing on Rome. Perhaps when the King Emperor of Britain attended the Deli Durbar in India he felt a little of how Caesar must have felt. But even London at its most imperial and at full pomp Victorian or Edwardian England still never quite had a Caesar feel to proceedings. The emperor of China at this time of history might be the closest thing to the Emperor.
