Motivation for me! My PB was 24:24 - about a year ago. I stopped running, had a broken foot from kick boxing... back into it around 8 weeks ago, gingerly doing ~ 33min 5k. The goal atm is just to get to 5km in sub-30 and then work towards the low 20s. Anything faster than 20min is definitely amazing to see.

When I find it hard to get motivated and out of the house, I just tell my inner b*tch to be quiet and force myself out of the house. Its easier said than done, but it works. The feeling of accomplishment you get after a run is doubled when you didnt feel like doing it in the first place vs when youre motivated.

Running alone is hard. Have done it for the last twenty odd years. As a young man I trained regularly for a decade or so with a group and the social side after training as well as motivation during training itself was a huge help in running 15min for 5k and 31 for 10k. I'd say upon bad days etc when things are a struggle, give yourself a big pat on the back for simply getting out there. Always have a goal in mind, both short term and medium/long term and keep focusing on that.

I always look forward to running on my own. My mental motivation is “What cool stuff will I see/experience on my run today ?”. In the later months when it’s dusk I see rabbits and count them, other times of the year I see squirrels and count them, etc. It’s always fun to be outside breathing clean air and feeling your body refresh itself. Happy runs everyone.. 😁

I don’t have a short or medium term goal in mind right now, but COROS predicts I should be able to do 5k in 25-26 minutes. My plan is to build volume over the next 9 months or so and then to run easy/moderate until I stop improving. Anyway, I enjoy it. At that point, I should have an idea of what is realistic for me. Then I'll get down to business.

i used to average 16 minutes for a 5k before lockdown (with 15:20 as a PB) but following the death of a close family member and a depressive slump I quit running indefinitely which was the worst thing I ever did. I am a month back into running and did a 19:43 this morning, which considering the almost 3 years absent from running I am over the moon. This video has given me the extra motivation I needed to aim higher! I’ll come back here when I break 18.. give it 4-5 months haha

just hit 20:41 at age 51, 3 runs a week, parkrun for the fast effort when ive got the most motivation of all those runners around me, young guys to beat (and people to draft 😏) intervals mid week to get those legs used to it, 6 x 800mts. Long run Sunday morning to build endurance, sometimes with 10k pace inside of the long run to experiment with some paces. It's helped me hit about 6 pb's within 2 months. I've got a feeling the last 41 secs to get under 20 might take some time but it's within reach.

I ran my 5k 2 years ago at 48. I finished 3rd with 23 min. I waited 2 years while kept training till I would get to 50, thinking I would do even better by aging up a division. I was wrong. I ran my 2nd 5k this weekend. I got 35sec faster but finished 3rd again. My conclusion is that those who run in 50’ are better, stronger and experienced runners. I was shocked. But at the same time it is so motivating and inspiring. I will keep training and shoot for 21 min here in Colorado.

This does help! Im a freshman in high school and running for a team that is a state champion, going for a back to back title this year. My coach has been really helpful in dropping time so far, and improving at an alarming rate. My first 5k i ever ran this year was a 27:35, which is pretty slow. I slowly cut it down to 25:20, then 22:36, and when the 2nd offical race came around, 20:24. Next meet i broke 20 with a 19:41, and the next meet after that, which was today, i broke 19 with an 18:44. So basically i broke 2 1-minute barriers, 2 meets in a row. Now im probably not gonna break 18 next Saturday, but im at least going for a varsity letter/Nike nationals qualification. (18:30 or faster), so i feel like that is reasonable to do. You can do a lot more than you think you can! My goal for my freshman year this season was a sub 21, and now at only the 4th out of 9 meets, i have an 18:44, breaking that goal by almost 2½ minutes. You just gotta put in the work and stay consistent, and when race day comes, give it everything you have in you. It will pay off.

I ran my 2nd ever 5k last week and got 26:26, my first one in July was 26:54. So a little improvement 😅 The 2nd course had lots of dirt trails and hills so it was much tougher. My goal is 20 minutes. I train Muay Thai and that's done wonders for my stamina, so between that and practicing running I should be able to reach that at some point 😁 My real goal, however, is a 5:49 or better mile. Just to beat my brothers who claim they beat me in high school. I got 5:52, and they said they got 5:51 and 5:50. I'm pretty sure they were f**king with me, but I want to beat it anyway. One brother passed away a couple years ago, so I can't rub it in his face though lol.

I'm a 50+ yo runner. It took me years to go under 20. The main things that significantly improved my times were: hill strides and speed work (but especially hill strides ... as they say "running up hill is like sprinting in disguise). Running longer at easy pace, build the volume. Finally, running at goal pace for longer (i.e. 7km).

Im only 40, but what helped me the most was the consistency. I made sure to have 45-50 miles per week. 6 days with 2 days of speed work. I also did strength building exercises too. If it helps, I trained for the 10k, which helped my pacing amazingly, and then the 5k was just easy peasy after that.

@thepsychologist8159
@thepsychologist8159 11 ай бұрын
@@MtbEMS As 7km is a chunky distance, my training is very much the same as what I said earlier on for the 5km. My weekly schedule would comprise 5x sessions. 3x easy-pace runs of 12-15km each. A progressive run (I'd do these on a treadmill so I know what paces to hit) - 12km total, 4x increments of 3km each, with the last two increments above race pace. Finally, an intervals/speed session at above race-pace, preferably on an incline - 10x intervals, 200m and 6-10x speedwork, 400m (but of course, starting with an easy session of approx. 15min) But of course, to get better at a certain distance you need to practice it. I have a nice 7km circuit at a near-by lake which incorporates inclines, declines and flats. Simply running the same course over and over allows you to get better and better, which typically results in quicker times.

Good tips! Used to run 26:xx a few years ago when I was in my late 40s. Now I’m 52 and doing sub 30’. Hopefully can improve gradually. I prefer to run ‘barefoot’ though, with minimalist shoes.

Currently my pb is 22:10 and my goal is to run sub 20. I haven't tried a PB in a long time so probably my time is considerably lower than 22:10 but still far away from the 20 minutes mark. I have a 5k race in just a little over a week so I hope that I can lower my PB there. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Would like to disagree on the running with others. People can be flakey. Which would then turn into an excuse to not do your run. Sometimes it is just better to run alone. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have a group of like minded individuals to run with regularly. Just saying it can also become a reason to hold you back. Great tips otherwise!

The 80/20 ratio (or the intensity of the 80%) just doesn't work for me. It. Just. Does. Not. The Z2 running (for me) is excellent for increasing mileage, but at the same time my body is just "decaying" slowly with so much running at that intensity. I may just fall off to far to one side of the (physical) normal distribution curve, dunno. I had the somewhat same experience back in the 90ies when I was a swimmer: My body has to work relatively hard to respond optimally from training. It could be the same today, which would perfectly explain why (too much) Z2 running just doesn't do it for me.

I stopped running for 38 years. Came back to run 25:00! A year later I'm down to 21:15 and hope to break 21:00 by the end of the year. It's taken so much longer than I thought it would to get here! I never thought I'd be thrilled to run in the 21's since I ran in the mid 15's as a youngster!

7km).

@@thepsychologist8159 Almost 59 here. Sub-21 is about all I'm hoping for, but still haven't achieved it. I'm slowly creeping up my weekly mileage towards 25-30. I usually do one interval workout per week. I do a long run with a group of old guys faster than me each week. Most of my runs are in my neighborhood which is nonstop rolling hills. I do try and charge them most days.

@@thepsychologist8159 Thanks. That's great. At this point I'm running only every other day and then rowing or cycling on the offdays to acclimate my joints and muscles to the pounding of running. I did 6 miles straight yesterday at 9 minute pace. I'm not sure when I should start running daily. My mind is ready but I don't want an injury.

Love this video! I'm targeting an 18min ParkRun myself! Definitely helping to be consistent with a run group. Only doing 3 sessions a week right now -- one zone 2 (about 8km), one track session (similar to what you described), then either a parkrun or 10km zone 2 over the weekend. Do you think that's enough volume to keep on progressing?
