I always cut the dust shield off and just leave the part we’re the stud go through. That way it doesn’t cause any problems with alignment
@BryanRT3262 ай бұрын
I’m confused why it would affect the alignment….i get that it will narrow your track width a tiny bit…but I don’t see it affecting toe caster or camber….what am I missing?
@Hailboundoffroad2 ай бұрын
@@BryanRT326I failed to put a dust shield back on when I did ball joints and it caused a popping in the front locker when you turned the wheel to the left, so I’m assuming the difference in axle alignment is just enough to cause things to bind up inside the differential, not the wheel alignment.
@Fierofreak014 ай бұрын
DON'T FORGET!! If the axle(s) has never been out, keep a look out for the 4 plastic axle guides that are used only when the axle was originally assembled at the factory, there's 2 on each axle. Just give a quick look in the axle tube and make sure they are not in there (they may have come out with the axles). Just toss them out, they are not needed as the tube interior is probably not smooth enough for them to slide in. If you don't get them out, you could mess up your seals by shoving them into or through the seal and causing a big leak. Your not going to want to change the axle seals in your driveway, it's a pita. I've seen it multiple times in that someone has changed their joints, and caused a leak and these were the culprits. The whole job is easy peasy if you have a rust free jeep, living in the central NY rust belt makes this job take waaay longer than it should.

My daily is a '05 LJ and I recently subscribed as a good bit of the XJ stuff can be applied to TJ/LJs. I never heard of anyone in the TJ world online talking about CV joints in the front axle. I've been going through the underneath stuff on the LJ a bit at a time for a year or so now. My next big job planned for my Jeep was going to be new front bearings and u-joints on the front axle as I'm pushing 175k on the original stuff. I think I'm going to cv joints now.

Funny this video popped back up in my feed again, I was talking a break from changing shocks on my LJ. Also thinking that I should do this swap. One of the u-joints has 255151 miles on it. The other one was replaced 6 years ago. That one wasn't to bad even though my 36mm socket was in storage 50 miles away. Changed u-joint with hub assembly attached. It seemed easier than without it.

comment below mentions : captain_awesome 's reply to - people want part numbers - Ch-8221 and Ch8220 And a comment above said if you add a C to the end of the number it’ll pull up a fleet version of the axles with a smaller boot similar to rcvs 3 @captain_awesome Also consider the heavy duty versions with CH8220HDX and CH8221HDX through Rockauto for ~$150 shipped both axles. Same as the C mentioned at Oreillys but considerably less cost for the same axle. Wish I knew about them before I ordered the regulars but doubt I need the heavy duty ones anyway.

Kinda funny after hearing for years how the CV's in my "soccer mom" WJ were going to explode at every turn or hill. Seems the needle has swung the other way. I did spend the big money recently with a set of RCV's, if you're serious wheeling they are well worth the money. I do run only 33 pie cutters but with 4.56 gearing and a healthy 4.7 (08 and up cams really wakes the older ones up) a stock CV has puked it's guts once on me.
