Jackson traces her interest in studying law back to her childhood. When she was 4, her father enrolled in law school at the University of Miami. She remembers sitting at the kitchen table with her coloring books, across from her father and his stack of law journals. Jackson went on to attend Harvard for both undergrad and law school. As a young lawyer, she says, she was often at the office before anyone else - and then she'd stay until everyone else had gone home. Working as a public defender helped shape the type of judge she would become.

Judge Motley was appointed to the court in the ‘60s, I believe. And this is the court in the Southern District of New York. And I was born in 1970. And when I was in late elementary school, early middle school, I came across an article about her in Essence or Ebony, one of the Black magazines that my parents subscribed to. And, gosh, I mean, it was such an eye opener for me, in part because I learned that we share a birthday, September 14th. We were born on exactly the same day, 49 years apart. ... And so here we had this woman who was a lawyer and who had gone on to be a judge, and the thought of being a judge just kind of planted in my mind. And it was something I guess I'd always wanted to do. And this was also around the time when Justice O'Connor had been appointed to the Supreme Court. So now we had a woman judge on the Supreme Court. I just remember those things being very motivational for me, early on.

I loved the part about learning about the first Black woman to serve as a federal judge, sharing a birthday, and then making that her goal. As a Black woman myself, my dreams were never to be the first anything. My sights were always limited to what I knew had been done before because I knew that those were attainable goals. I can't speak for an entire group of people, but I'm sure that I was not alone in that way of thinking. It's why representation is so important. Regardless of your gender, race, ethnicity, or religion. It matters so much when you have an example to look up to. I just wish that we all were able to understand that. Why it is that we celebrate the firsts, whether it's the first Black woman supreme court justice or the first all Black podium in women's gymnastics at the Olympics. Again, I can't speak for all Black folks, nor do I want to. Sure, those things are exciting, but my joy is always because I know that there is a little Black girl out there who is watching ❤

Aside from her brilliant mind and incredible resume, Justice KBJ has a warm & kind-hearted spirit. Idc about her race & gender being a factor in her being chosen, she's more than qualified and deserves to be there
@NS-ju7vz
@NS-ju7vz 10 күн бұрын
Qualification is always the context. Yet, we cannot ignore the unfortunate reality that minorities because of their skin color and women because of their gender, have not been selected for opportunities or not thought about because of the factors you mentioned. The inequalities based on gender and racial gaps cannot be more obvious that we must be forced to be intentional about breaking this disparaging ceiling of qualified persons being restricted because of unmerited biases regarding people of color and women. We will not have to highlight lifting qualified minorities and women when our country takes the ideals and principles America espouses EVERYONE being equal, regardless of skin color and gender. Then and only then, will there not be a need to highlight race or gender because qualified individuals will be judged and considered based his or her qualifications and content of character without prejudice. When we genuinely pratice that as Americans we should not be satisfied with seeing one gender and one race overly represented in spaces that do not represent the diversity and talent of America 🇺🇸. Qualification, equity, and representation balance is critical to the ideals of America that for a number of reasons we are still struggling to make this a realization norm in our democracy.

She’s such a nerd, in a good way. Definitely front of the class room answering all the teachers questions. On the other side: “I like beer! 😠”
