In 2014, Eastern Cape lawyer, Zuko Nonxuba, allegedly set into motion a sinister plan to defraud the desperate families of children with severe disabilities. It's claimed he pilfered millions in medical payouts from the Department of Health by manipulating the mothers of children born with cerebral palsy and pocketing the millions meant for their care. It’s a legal scandal that went on for years while the Legal Practice Council (LPC) - the profession’s statutory oversight body - looked on. Now, the Constitutional Court has finally ruled on Nonxuba’s suspension and, inspired by our investigation, some of South Africa’s top legal minds have come together to fight for the children. As Nonxuba finally gets his comeuppance, Carte Blanche puts the failings of the LPC under the spotlight.

I have dealt with the LPC twice. I have never seen such incompetent people. What I gathered is they never bother to investigate. In my case after supplying them with all elements pertaining to my case and constantly following up with them to find out if any action was taken. They then asked me one of the stupidest questions on the lawyer's particulars, which was on their own website, after taking screenshots of their own website and supplying it to them. They vanished and never responded to me. Please don't tell me about black or white, because both of the people I emailed and dealt with were white and black. Also lawyers are aware of the incompetence of the LPC and would laugh at you if you inform them that you are planning to take up the matter with the LPC.

The thing that truly frustrates me is the snail pace of our legal system with no concern that the people in need of medical assistance are degenerating in the process. Why is there no special consideration given to those whose health lies in the balance? This story has broken my heart because I too have been effected by the extremely lengthy process of our legal system. I feel angered by the lack of empathy and consideration of people's lives, that we should just fall into line along side every other case going through our courts. I have mixed feelings about all of it. I am grateful that my circumstances are not nearly as fatal as these poor children and understand the struggle that their families are up against dealing with government hospitals. Why is it acceptable to steal people's lives in a country famous for human rights?
