I do hope that our (🇿🇦) broadcasters are able to keep him for future test games- his expert commentary will again be appreciated.

I'm south African and I think NZ could definitely benefit from letting more players play overseas, and for their country, I think it's helped SA rugby. We lose so many players yo overseas teams but good overseas teams but it then gives the chance for the younger players to get a chance and step up alot of them would be on the bench if we had that rule in place and all the players playing overseas bring so much information back with them on certain players they play with and can pass that on to the rest of the team

Great conversation guys. I have waited a for a while to digest the entire RWC and to listen to others before I comment. I congratulate SA for winning the World Cup. The AB’s will be hurting as they had their opportunities and didn’t take them. I am a Kiwi living in Canada. I have played rugby in both countries and I am passionate about the game. Living in a country where rugby is not followed by a large number of people I encouraged many friends to watch the final. When it was done and dusted many friends were confused about the rules and how they are applied. I spent plenty of time trying to explain yellow cards and the laws around rucks and why the TMO was overruling the ref….and so on… The abuse of officials is a concern in most sports at every level. What referees need is the support of their governing body through training and providing the systems for them to do the very best job on the field. The silence from world rugby regarding the team officials since the RWC final speaks volumes. We have heard from so many rugby greats; players, officials and pundits stating that there is a problem. The “system” does not support the referee. I agree that Wayne Barnes is the best rugby referee in world rugby but it didn’t appear that way when the TMO overruled his decisions on the field. I think it not only made Barnes look bad it frustrated him also. World Rugby needs to take responsibility for this and make some adjustments to how the TMO is used and improve the game. RWC France was a huge success by the numbers but the next 2 might be a tough sell in countries where rugby is not nearly as popular. We want people talking about how great the game is and not the controversy of decisions made by officials watching video screens. Some questions World Rugby should answer…if player safety is number 1, then why didn’t any players come off the field for an HIA? There were at least 2 other incidents that involved head contact….why were they overlooked. If I remember rightly you could hear the TMO say after one incident “it was a glancing blow no foul play”. The Smith no try….you can clearly hear Wayne Barnes say “no knock on, play on”. Yet the TMO reviews it 10 times in super slow motion and tells Wayne your wrong reverse that decision. That is just rubbish. In trying to make the game better and safer World Rugby is doing the opposite and the game is a tough sell outside of a few countries.

After well over 50 years of watching every single All Blacks test match, the last game I watched was the one where SBW was given a red card against the Lions. I could see where it was heading and I haven't been wrong. Add to that the bit where NZ Rugby appointed an incompetent coach, only the pathologically optimistic fans are able to be fully enthusiastic about rugby and the once great and feared All Blacks. Perhaps next year will start being different with a proper coach, a genuine winning coach. That still doesn't change the shambles World Rugby have done to the game though.

Ja let’s not forget that pass to Telea was three metres forward and by that stage the tmo didn’t want to intervene but should have. And there was a dropped ball that 9/10 times is called forward, just after that, before the try. So there’s five points you don’t get 9/10 times. So too much tmo then not enough when it counts

Always curious when people point out that one penalty etc could have won the game for the losing team, and opportunities missed? True - but equally, the other/winning team miss opportunities which could have made the margin greater. Maybe if Kolisi had passed it would have put the game beyond NZ? Why not between the world cups. The second year post. Run a world 2 tier league. Top 8 face off for one tier. And next 8 another Tier. Play each team twice, one away, one at home. And do it like a football finals. Where the winner between the 2 teams after the 2 matches goes on points tally between both games. Encourages more tries. More regular international clashes. How is the flow more important than accurate decisions? The latter is magnitudes more important than the former. It was as un-obtrusive as possible, and the right decisions were reached more often than not, even if it can be improved a lot (i.e. Mapimpi vs. Dupont's culprits getting vastly different punishments despite being very similar incidents). Drop all TMO involvement for a year and see how that works out for you. You think referee abuse is bad now - you ain't seen nothing yet. Good time to reflect …. Imagine this scenario. World Cup finished. Many players retired or playing elsewhere. Then a pandemic like COVID happens. Whole country locked down. No real rugby competition throughout the early / mid part of 2024. The tri nations are now scheduled to be played in Australia late in the third quarter of 2024 immediately followed by a game somewhere else in the world enroute to the traditional northern tour. The boys selected cannot return home for close to three months because of the global pandemic. What will Robertson do faced with such a scenario? Oh yes … assume Robertson was not given any surety that his job is safe till the next World Cup ( I.e. he is constantly and openly challenged by other coaches and media). Further imagine Robertson, before his tenure is up being told that he will be fired following the next World Cup, irrespective of how well he performs at the next World Cup. Foster faced the same scenario after the 2019 World Cup. He had no choice but to pick over 40 players. He had two average assistant coaches to assist him. Imagine the effort it took to develop a team, develop combinations, progress in spite of massive challenges and losses to end up losing the World Cup final by only 1 point with only 14 players for most of the game.

Poor discipline, kicking and tactics throughout the rwc and fairly inconsistent against the top teams again, and it's worth suggesting the team failed. Fact is, fans have said the ABs have the talent, skill and they're not putting it on the park week in week out
@austingtir
@austingtir Жыл бұрын
Thats rubbish the kicking tactics were on the money imo and its the only reason we nearly beat them with 14men. Had we not kicked for touch and took more penalties that allows the boks a restart and potential to lock us in our half and grind out a mistake against 14 men. Which the boks are experts at. Fact is the tactical kicking for the corners kept us in that game (our lineout and scrum shaded them) because it ended up being the boks that couldnt exit their own half and it applied pressure on them and they were out of sorts because of that in the second half. It was just the officiating in general that lost us that game. THREE MISSED LEADING ELBOWS by boks players alone ignored. One on eben and the offside incident on him is enough for a red card. Same deal with Kolisi and then the bongi incident should of been reversed because Ginga bok prop comes in with a forearm to Frizells face which causes him to twist and fall akwardly on Bongis utterly ridiculously placed legs (that was also penalizable because he was sealing the ball off creating no contest at the ruck).

We sit on our couches every weekend and are spoonfed 20 angles of the same thing within 30 seconds of it happening, followed by often misleading law interpretations by the usually partisan commentators. So we come on here and bitch and whine (and create channels like TAS Analytics with the express aim of bitching and whining) about how the referee robbed us. The TMO has the ability to see what we see, the HD shots from every angle that give him the best opportunity of making the right decision; and still we moan. We moan because the right decision is not the decision we want, we moan because the right decision took too long to get to, we moan because our pundits and commentators have no clue what the law says and they get it horribly wrong so often. So here's the thing.... we NEED the TMO to get involved and we need him to weed out as many of the poor decisions as are humanly possible. From a spectator point of view, being able to do that without taking so long would be nice so let's hope they find a way to streamline that. But until then, the right decision has to be our number 1 focus even if it goes against us.

By expanding the wc to 24 teams you’re giving the sport more reach and giving those extra 4 teams added exposure to the highest level. The game won’t grow if we’re too scared to give those players opportunities. Look at how far Portugal and Uruguay have improved. Score blow outs will happen whether there’s 20 or 24 teams. Spread the game and give more players opportunities to learn and grow, and maybe we’ll get some exciting upsets too.

TMO should only intervene on genuine deliberate foul or dangerous play and only intervene on trys if asked to by the ref. Knock ons, forward passes, etc should be refs call on field only. Captains should have 1 challenge each per half that you retain if you are correct and lose if you are wrong. Apply the 20 min red card law. If a head knock is bad enough that a player gets carded, then the player that suffered the head contact also has to go for a mandatory HIA, this is both for player safety, but also to stop players milking penalties for nothing contact. As fans, if we want actual rugby played then the on field ref needs to make most of the calls and we have to accept the odd wrong one. Most of the Angst at the moment is that with all the tech, all the interruption all the "ahh Wayne, taking you back 29 phases there was a knock on" they still make just as many screw ups....

The same people who are now bleating about the TMO examining pre-try infringements would have paid top dollar to have a TMO in the 2007 RWC QF against France to call the try back for a forward pass. The same people who are calling the TMO a cheat for going back several phases to see a knock on, never had a bad thing to say about the TMO who overturned an English try against the Black Ferns in the Woman's final. The same people who are calling the officials cheats, have no clue what the laws say or mean, yes even their pundits who believe a phase of play includes a tackle and clean out - it doesn't! A "phase of play" is clearly defined on page 21 of the rugby law book as "Scrum, lineout, ruck or maul". There was not a single one of these, again as defined in the law book, because not a single tackle escalated past a tackle into a ruck. It's sickening how the best rugby franchise in the history of the game has fans and pundits who think they are entitled to score despite infringing and then blame the officials and the system when they are caught.

The only two games where I have seen the NZ fans and pundits go on like this about the officials were the last two games against the Boks. Both were games where you were heavily punished for infringements, both were games where knock ons and other infringements caused tries to be overturned, both were games where you lost a player to a red card LEGITIMATELY. I don't think it is the TMO who is the issue here, I think it is the process. What we actually need is the TMO to be calling things real time, or perhaps a couple of seconds later, it should not need to be shown to the referee on the big screen. He should be able to call out infringements or anything else without the onfield officials needing to convene in a location where they can watch it on the big screen. How many times we see the AR just give a thumbs up to say that a try is legit but with the TMO we now need a meeting and a Powerpoint presentation. But bottom line is that the correct decision should always be our primary goal. Now let's just sort out the process.

You do realise that that SA also played without a true hooker for most the game plus also 20 min with 14 players. That disrupted the SA lineouts, one of SAs strong points, where AB wouldn't have dominated that much. Also bringing part of the "Bom squat" on earlier with Bonambi injury defeated the whole purpose of having the Bom squat. So I dont buy the 14 man excuse. Then further why do so many think ABs deserved to win the RWC. ABs played only 3 of the top 6 ranked teams and only managed ro beat 1 of the 3. SA had to play 5 of the top 6 teams and beat 4 of the 5. From that, they surely deserves that win more. Do you really want to claim a try from a knock on purely because the clear knock on is tecnically a few plays back. By any rule that is a clear knock on and not a try. It would have been unfair to SA if awarded. SA almost scored two tried as well . If you want to count the missed kicks, you should count Arendse try as well because it wasnt any defenders stopping him and a mistake by himself, same as a missed kick by a kicker. Im also convinced that even if ABs was just Infront last 10 min, SA would have had a plan to score enough. They would have found a way as with the other playoff games Now last pount, stop complaining about the ref, as the players and team should not even put him in the position to have to make a call on foulplay. Not refs fault.
