Justin Marshall - former All Blacks halfback with 81 test caps to his name, and now one of the most respected rugby commentators around the world - joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport, to further unpack New Zealand's surprise 38-30 defeat to Argentina in Wellington. It was the third time the All Blacks had lost a test to the Pumas, with all three coming within the last four years.
Marshall and Devlin delve into specifics around the All Black performance including set piece, lineout and taking advantage of attacking opportunities. They also cast an eye over the Springboks' 33-7 thumping of the Wallabies in Brisbane.

If he doesn't trust Barrett then bench instead of MacKenzie and put Plummer there. Jordan at fullback, Ioane and ALB at 13 & 12, Ratima at 9 with Hotham on the bench with Proctor.

Springbok fan here, I have the utmost respect for Australia and New Zealand. I grew up watching them dominating teams. I think both teams need time to gel with each other and the new coaching staff. Mistakes will inevitably occur. The Springboks were in these situations early 2000's and then post 2010.

That's right. It swings in roundabouts. Haters have been saying the same thing for years, that the AB's have lost it but they made a world cup final and only lost by the slimmest of margins. It's the start of a new cycle, there'll be losses. The AB's will get back to the top I'm sure. The Boks are enjoying are great period but it won't last forever.

Let’s face it, Barrett at 10 and Jordan at 15 should probably start. The idea that the bench will rescue you begs the question of why we get into strife in the first place. The selection has been poor, the gameplan much-talked about but seemingly no different to Foster’s regime, the sheer gobbledygook spoken at post match almost condescending to the fans.

This is going to be a very long road for those New Zealanders stuck in the old way of thinking, when it comes to rugby. The tides have turned, and we are simply no longer the dominant force we once were. People can choose to bury their heads in the sand and go on doing the same old routine of whining about what went wrong every time we don't win. But I'd suggest it's not going to end well for them if they do. Personally, I'm enjoying watching games where the outcome isn't predictable. I never understood the so-called joy of watching your team play when you pretty much knew they were going to win every time they played.

@@J0sh351 Except playing badly isn't something that NZ have never ever done before until now (remember John Hart's All Blacks' side losing 5 tests in 1998?). We've just been lucky enough to get by and either find a way to win when we arguably didn't play that well, or to be able to start afresh the following year because we knew that the opponents would struggle to maintain the strength they had. Today, because the gap is closing, such mistakes make a much bigger difference to the result of games than they used to.

One issue is his selection policy. He said Ioane and Finau were dropped on performance, so why was Jordie there. Dmac doesn't seem to be learning so he needs to give someone the chance to show they are better. The forwards need to go forward. If there is difficulty then the 10 needs to give us go forward and field position by tactics and game management, something DMac doesn't seem able to do.

I would have thought the last 4-5 years of results would have seen a little bit more humility from the Kiwi media about where things stand in the rugby pecking order, but it seems they can't bring themselves to admit that maybe, just maybe, the rest of the rugby world has caught up, or in some cases surpassed the All Blacks. No, you shouldn't just be beating Argentina any more, the AB's have to earn their wins just like everyone else.

@@ryansmith2553 I'm fine with the Kiwis having standards, but there's also a stubbornness from their media to accept loses from teams they deem beneath them, which is completely unfair to Argentina. Agree with most of Justin's critique. The loose forward trio balance is not working. They do not play the attacking side as a cohesive unit. All played the attacking side as individuals. Papali'i was nowhere to be seen on attack and Blackadder was patchy. Ardie can't do it all. Changes are needed this week. Its time to stop repeating the same compromise/mistake that we have been making for six years...moving the world's best 7 to 8. Start Ardie at 7 and put Sititi at 8 where his heft and athleticism can best be exploited. I'd start Cane at 6 to shut down the blindside and add some mongrel at the breakdown...Blackadder and Jacobson (if fit) (otherwise Pinau) on the bench. Peter Lakai is the future at 7 and should be understudy to Ardie. Papali'i can sit this one out. As for the locks, if Tuipolotu is still injured then we should start Vai'i and Darry again. If Tuipolotu is ready to go, then he plays ahead of Vai'i who moves to the bench. Vai'i and the coaches need to take a look at how England use Etoji, and get some of his mongrel and spoiler into Vai'i's game. And he should be used like Etoji to disrupt the opposition's lineouts and be a fourth loosie in the last 30 minutes of games...he has the athleticism. The bench props should be Williams and Tosi this week. As for the backline, TJ is slow off the base and has a labored pass that is not out front to put his first-five on the front foot. His box kicking is not effective. Start Ratima and use Hotham off the bench. Roigard is still the future. DMac is not a starting first-five. His game management is lacking, especially against a rush defense, and his positional kicking has been poor. We need a game manager who can get us playing in the right parts of the park...out of our 22 and into theirs. DMac is a magical player best used as a super-sub to cover FB and first-five if needed. Agree with Justin that we should play Barrett at first-five this week with ALB and Proctor outside him. Wish we had the vision to bring Jacomb in as an understudy to Barrett. Plummer would be a settled place-holder option. Jordie was one dimensional on Saturday and couldn't get over the gain line or get his offloads away. ALB is better able to use a full skill set against a rush defense. Proctor is a specialist center who plays both sides of the ball well. He is much better at seeing space, creating space for his wingers, and distributing the ball than Reiko...who after 3 years is still a power winger who can tackle. Clark starts this week ahead of Talea who, if he plays, they will target again at kick offs and with box kicks. Reece plays again and should be used to feed the ball to a scrum or two and possibly throw to a lineout or two...freeing up a big body to confuse the defense and punch holes. Boks did this very effectively against the Wallabies...coaches (especially MacDonald and Hansen) should watch that game and learn what "innovation" looks like at test level. Jordan at FB. Leon MacDonald and Scott Hansen need to step up this week and show us the promised "innovation"...start by selecting players in their specialist positions...Ardie at 7, Jordan at 15, ALB at 12, Barrett at 10, Proctor at 13...and go from there.
@markreilly105
@markreilly105 Ай бұрын
Unfortunately Ardies time as a 7 has passed and he's too small for an 8. Best as impact off the bench. SR had the chance to pick specialists but chose a team of players who can cover multiple positions. Needed Sititi and Sotutu as 8's, Plummer as another 10, he doesn't seem to want to use Barrett, needs a specialist 7, Kirifi or Lakai, maybe both. Has to go with Ratima and Hotham but wouldn't bet on it. Barrett 10, though he's already said he's going with MacKenzie, ALB, Proctor, Telea and Clarke, Jordan at the back. If they target Telea as you say, then they need to move it on to the 10 to kick, or run it up so it can be cleared to halfway.

@@markreilly105 At 1.83m and 107kgs Ben Earl is 5cm shorter than Ardie. Kwagga Smith is only 1.80m and 100kgs and has played 8 for the Boks. So I'm not sure that at 1.88m and 103kgs Ardie is too small to play 8...he did win international player of the year last year in that position. Still, I think he would be even better reverting back to his original specialist position at 7 and making room for Sititi at 8. Sotutu was dropped because he is not consistent and goes missing in matches. Not sure he has the "give no quarter" attitude required to produce consistent results at test level against the better sides.
@markreilly105
@markreilly105 Ай бұрын
@@Buster62 I hear what you say about Earl and Smith, however Ardie was able to do the things he did because of the job the other loosies did as they are. Cane and Frizzell allowed Ardie to play a little looser and with Retallic, Whitelock, and Barrett he could work off them. Two years ago, when Cane was injured, everyone raved about Papali'i at 7. Ardie is 188cm and 95kg Sotutu 196cm 118kg. That extra height means we have an extra lineout option and we have seen how good he was all year in the lineout. So because 2 years ago he didn't measure up does that mean we throw him on the scrap heap. That would have meant no Kaino, no Frizzell, Carter had a couple of off years, as did Mealamu, Coles, shall we keep naming ones who did, Nonu. Ardie would be a great impact player but we need to allow Sititi and Sotutu to continue their development or we end up where we are at 12, 4, 5, and 2.

@@markreilly105 Either the coaches feel that with Ardie, Jacobson and Sititi we have 8 covered or there has to be another reason why Hoskins was not selected. I would suggest that his Instagram tweet of "Most hated" after he was not selected in the initial pre-championship squad (having just completed a grueling super-rugby campaign) will not have gone over well with the coaches as it demonstrated a rather egoistical mindset and disrespectful disdain for the new coaches -- which has no place in the AB environment. If his attitude was healthy he'd have realized they were going to select larger 36-man squads for the Championship and end of year tour, providing him with ample opportunity to resume his AB career. Hoskins squandered his opportunity to make the Championship squad with his Instagram. If I was his agent I'd have chewed his adolescent head off. At 26 years of age its time he grew up and learnt how to deal with disappointment. Maybe the coaches will give him a chance on the end of year tour...but unless he can redeem himself by showing some contrition and maturity...I doubt it. And as for his size: his height is 1.92m and weight 112kgs -- like Kieren Reid.

Reactive kicking without purpose and inaccurate. The lack of synchronicity. Twenty minutes to go and we are in trouble in most games I watch lately. We used to hear “they need to start well” and then it’s “exit strategy’s” next it’ll be “the breakdown”(SA). When are they going to put it together? Don’t we get the full package anymore? Is it just excuses for players and coaches now? Oh well there’s no one to play cos SA have gone north etc... It seems to me we lack mongrel that the opposition have these days. An All Black fan here. I think it’s still too early to call things to a halt. I can agree that the world has definitely caught up, and SA is the best now, but I think that Razor and the team still have it in them to change the narrative. It’s too early to say “ the all black dominance era is completely done “. New things are coming under a new regime. Give it 2- 5yrs & things can shift quick. It’s a transitional time for NZ and we still have a big say in who stays top and goes down. SA went through up and downs too over the decades so it swings around a lot. NZ are still in the top tier, the north aren’t quite clued up on winning a World Cup ( we came 2nd due to missed kicks and lack of discipline ). We came 2nd when were written off and should not have made the quarters according to many ( given the coaching and internal wars narrative ). I think it’s too premature to overlook everything and to panic. Let’s just relax and let them rebuild. SA rebuilt and now they are the talk of town, it takes time. That’s all.

The ABs lacked imagination / creativity…. a trait that ABs are well known for. I think Razor forgot that this is not super rugby … it is test level rugby. Even the coach is a joke, his name is Scott Robinson, not razor, and the guy needs a haircut, which is just as messy as his game plan. And what's with 2 vice captains, that's a freakin joke. One captain that can think in trying situations should be it! Cody needs to step up, Lomax spends too much time wrestling off the ball, S.Barrett should be blind side with cane open, TJ should be told he's holding the spot for when Roigard is fit, B.Barrett (two times rugby player of the year) at first five, ALB, 2nd, J.Savea centre, Ioane and Talea wings and Jordan at fullback. Bench should at least be Aumua (if not starting) Tamaiti, and Tu'ungafasi, (newell needs to harden up), Sititi or Papalii, Ratima, Mackenzie and J.Barrett. Darry was probably the only highlight for the ABs, he just needs to bulk up with more muscle... so we need another lock to go with Darry, a loosey that can follow in Canes footsteps, and a few more hard running backs... and a coach with a frakin clue. Not responding when the going started to get tough and leaving the boys under pressure shows signs of a weak coaching staff...

The ratio on rugby podcasts for congratulating Argentina are about 99 % from kiwis and you can go and check them and do some home work before generalising the public of New Zealand . If you really understand the Allblacks make up of players there from farming rural back grounds and religious backgrounds and have been since the Collin Meads days . A lot of them are actually quite shy and quiet and we’re sorry NZ doesn’t have the same political history as youres to pronounce to the world look where we come from attitude . I’m proud of who they are and how they act as ambassadors for New Zealanders and we are entitled as people to think they should be way way better than they currently are . I think getting a winger to throw the ball into the line out to make a mockery of Australia is the most arrogant thing I’ve ever seen at international level in the history of rugby .

You clearly don't know much about the history of rugby, wings used to through the ball into the line out all the time

Why exactly should you not lose that test match to Argentina are you bigger than them,are you faster than them,do you want it more,are your systems better no evidence of any of that oh wait I know because your (THE ALL BLACKS) like seriously what makes you better than them other than your history you guys can’t even sell out a home ground the South Africans are selling out away grounds I get times are tough I get it but I’m pretty sure the rand is weaker than your currency and divided between more people nobody went to that game because your fans think it is an easy win and players are arrogant and lose focus against teams they think they are supposed to beat your players are more arrogant than the English which says a lot considering on all available evidence you at the same level as them barely beating them at home
