Great video, Justin. I completely agree with your take on fame and the boundaries that need to be respected. Just because someone is famous doesn’t mean they lose the right to a private life. I remember seeing Noel Fielding at London Zoo years ago. I was a big fan of The Mighty Boosh, but he was with his family, so I just walked past and got on with my day. There’s a time and a place, and it’s important to treat public figures with the same respect we’d want for ourselves.

Honestly, I doubt a lot of "fans" would use their situational awareness and emotional intelligence to come to such a conclusion. Rather, they will go with "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take." 😕 I remember another comment section with a story about Bob Dylan. Some lady took care of his expired parking meter. Then she camped out, and tried to use that "good deed" to badger him into taking a photo with her child.

Fame sucks. As a pro musician of over 40 years (though not famous), all I ever wanted was for my musicianship to be appreciated and just share a few moments with people. That's what music is really supposed to be about. So many empty people try to fill the holes in their souls with fame for fame's sake. I think that they think if they are the objects of adulation that will make them feel that they have value. Only the most vapid of celebrities truly get their personal value from how much they are adored. I can't think of many things worse than being a prisoner to one's celebrity. Always people wanting something from you. People like Keannu Reeves are truly something special, to be able to deal with the baggage of megastardom with such patience and grace. I'm nice to people, but I KNOW I don't have that in me! God Bless, Justin. Love your music, your show, and your attitude! Oh, and I play a bunch of your awesome songs on guitar too! Though I can't sing your stuff. 😂

Years ago I was walking with my GF at the time in Hamstead, we heard a geezer shouting at us, he had stopped at the traffic lights. Couldn't make out what he was saying, he was asking us if we wanted a lift down the hill tinto Camden.Town. The sun was out he was driving a white droptop Bentley Continental, and it was her neighbour. George Michael. And speaking of, GM dealt with a 'crazed' fan who crept in and camped underneath his house for a week, she was found out & arrested. But George rather than have her punished invited her to stay with him for week to see how ordinary/boring he was. He was a rock n roll popstar

I found this video insightful into the world of fame. It raises some important questions and points. Its not often we hear how someone famous may object to their treatment and I have respect to Chappel Roan for being brave enough to discuss her objections and hope her record label supports her for doing so. We all need to discuss our boundaries to be able to maintain them otherwise the result is unhealthy and toxic but for those who perform it must be particularly challenging. An interesting topic as the world around us is changing so fast with the use of the internet and social media in particular which has increased the pressures on all of us. I wonder just how much different the world of fame has become. Well done Justin on another thought provoking video!

I don't envy any celebrity that puts themselves out there, it's vicious. I rarely approach because I feel its invasive (and I always make a fool out of myself and get tongue-tied). I've wanted to share my journey, I even started a website, but I know who I am and I take things very personal. I'm older and finally embraced my love of music so I started playing (learning) drums in my late 50s. For me, its about sharing a mutual love of music and expressing myself through it. My vibe is not going to jive with everyone. Thats okay, so move on and follow someone you do connect with. But tearing someone down or expecting that person to be what you want them to be, um no. And there is far, far too much of that. Be nice people, it doesn't cost anything. (I know, for that to work properly, everyone needs to be respectful).

When I was 17, I had a semi-successful KZbin channel. ~ 2008/09. Early KZbin days. You'd get little badges with ranks globally, nationally #20 Most Subscribed etc. Back then, I was adamant I wanted to be anonymous. I was terrified of fame, but loved making music. One day, I logged on and I saw I had a little ribbon with "#2 - Most Subscribed (Today) - United Kingdom" or something like that and it absolutely terrified me. The numbers were rather small by todays standards, as well. But I closed it all down without explanation, stopped making music and have only recently returned to making music in the last two years. I felt so overwhelmed and terrified. How these young women and men find the courage to cope with REAL fame, with ZERO privacy or anonymity, I do not know. Of course it helps actually wanting the fame. But the absolute vast majority of people have never stopped to consider what it must feel like to be famous as a by-product of doing something you love. You don't get to invade peoples space, or treat them like you own them just because you happen to like art they make. It's absurd.

This is a good reminder that each artist is (obviously) an individual human being that has their own personality and preferences. In this age of non-artist celebrities that put their “reality” out there to be discussed and promoted, it was good to have a reminder that it’s not one-size-fits-all. Some people are shy and reclusive, and are not courting public notice or interaction. It’s just plain old good manners to respect a person‘s privacy when they are not engaged in a public function. And it’s just good manners that when they are, such as walking the red carpet, to still treat them with courtesy and good manners, and realize that they’re not some public commodity or puppet that we can manipulate.

I have been within 6 foot of my biggest music hero a lot of times, lucky in some ways, but I always left him alone, I can see the constant hassle he has to deal with and would feel guilty adding to it. I've been in bars/restaurants/hotels near rockstars too, and just left them alone. My only regret really is standing at the back of hammersmith one night watching a show, and realising a musician I really liked was standing next to me, I think he assumed I didnt know who he was, I should have shook his hand, all I could muster was a weak smile.

Interesting debate. Ultimately I think it comes down to respect. I do think it's OK to approach someone you admire and respect, to ask them for an autograph or to just tell them what their music/art etc means to you, but it needs to be done in a polite and respectful manner. Also there's a time and a place. There have been many occasions when I've decided not to go and speak to someone when they've been with their family, or in a situation where me approaching them would be inappropriate. In the same way, I think fame is a by-product of success and kind of goes with the territory, so if you are approached in a polite and respectful manner then I don't think you should get arsey about it.

It must be a hard balancing act for those who are expected to be on all the socials all of the time nowadays. Like kids in school, expecting to have the latest phones and be media present. I think lots of people have trouble recognising the difference between reality and fantasy anyway. Respect and tolerance are in short supply and almost frowned upon while we are encouraged to show hatred and division. Not right that respect, tolerance, love, kindness, diplomacy and just agreeing to disagree are not in "fashion" now. Bring them back I say, lets be kind to each other and change the current fashion trends! 🤘💖

Being famous really just means a lot of people of know you. I like meeting famous people, but it's because they often are very good at something and/or lived abnormal lives, which often makes them interesting to talk to. But they are just people. I've lived in places in other countries where I was the only person of my race in that town. In effect, I was locally famous because everyone know who I was and often talked about me. It made me VERY uncomfortable for a while and really stressed me out for a while. It has to be even more uncomfortable and stressful for people who are famous singers, actors, and so on. I feel sorry for those people. Try to imagine this: you love music, playing an instrument, and/or the roller coaster of performing a song in front of others. If you want to do it professionally then you need to become "popular". Sure, it's nice when people like what you worked hard to make, but should you then lose your privacy, put up with constantly being interrupted if you dare go to a restaurant to eat or go shopping, put up with people insisting you take a picture with them or sign something and then get angry if you refuse, people thinking they can say absolutely anything to you because they saw you on a screen somewhere, and so on. Just insane.

I always ask first if I may meet them. So far, celebrities and rock stars have been very gracious. I absolutely, without hesitation, would respect it if they said it was not a great time right now. When I politely asked Paul Dean of Loverboy if I may have a selfie with him, he said, "if you can wait 2 minutes". "Of course", I said, and wasn't sure if he'd actually come back but he did! He seemed happy to have a super quick encounter with a fan. I've also gently put out my hand for a high five or a quick hand shake...it's not appropriate to try to hug/ get close to someone who doesn't know you. I don't ask every single time for a photo/selfie, but when I have, the artists seemed genuinely courteous about it...meaning, they are also smiling with their eyes. Al Harlow of Prism said to me, "Hey, the day this stops, is the day I'm out of work". Justin, you once briefly told the story of the "fan" who put you in a head lock and wouldn't let go. That was an actual assault and SO obvious of what NOT to do when spotting a celebrity or rock star! You may have just given me an idea for a new channel..."Separating the Artist from the Art" - an Intro into not going Ape Shit when crossing paths with someone Famous." Notable: the very first time I heard the audio of what actually happens on the red carpet, I was beyond appalled! Yelling photographers competing for the celebrities attention to get the best shot without the inking that this is a person in front of them, not a "trick pony!" Super great commentary, as always, Justin.

I always think of commercially successful artists as having a creative job - the key word being job. There are exceptions obviously - it is art after all - but people always talk about having a career in the arts. This is where the disconnect happens because there is no job description for being an artist or famous - some may love the attention, others not. There have always been obsessive fans and always been intrusive media but social media has multiplied people's visibility by a massive factor. Even if you are not fan you still probably know who people are. Art by it's nature talks to people and can provide meaning and emotional fulfilment. This is the fundamental point of art which and contributes to the feeling of connection to the artist and fellow fans. However it must be terrifying to be a young person and have everyone know everything about you when you might not have figured that out yourself. A little bit of respect for the wishes of the individual artist and behaving like a decent human being (to everyone not just the famous)goes a long way. Ramble over ❤

I should think it’s the reality of 24/7 hassle, people can be so rude normally without believing they know everything about you and can say anything to get a response, be that good or bad or shocking. I remember Bowie explaining someone phoned and told him his son was very sick, when he was on tour, it was a hoax. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Outrageous. I’m sure he was probably grumpy with a few people after that. 🫤

There's a point made in this video about the importance of separating the art from the artist, but at the end of the vid we longingly reminisce about a time when the artist was an extension of their art. Huh? Which is it? There might seem like there's a weird tension between those ideas. But it makes sense. That's how any other profession works. If an amazon delivery driver wants to moan about their job, or have a bender on the weekend, that's entirely their business. The consumer should just be happy that they're getting their prime-day delivery of life-sized justin hawkins body pillows or whatever. I think the confusion arises in the marketing and publicity of art. Artists are encouraged to "engage with their fans", "tell all", show us "whats in my bag" etc. "Para-social" publicity has always been a part of the music industry and it confuses fan and artist alike. The problem is that it works.

Thanks Justin, your insight and humor come through as always. I will never understand what it's like to have that level of attention and being a shy person don't want it so I can agree with her and others on that. However, it seems ironic to me that she's using social media to voice her feelings and opinions while complaining that's what others are doing. And appearing in that interview with makeup and clothes that scream "Look at me!". Maybe she's got to go on the DL, put on jeans, a t-shirt and sunglasses when she goes to the store, try to blend. It seems that she wants to control the level of admiration she gets and that's not going to work.

I ONLY separate art from artist for nice kind people just doing their thing. I believe in treating all people with respect and boundaries and Chappell Roan should feel free to call out people being fckernuggets, just like any normal person. Now, if people do actual horrendous things then I can't make the separation and I don't listen to them much, if at all, any more. I have albums in the next room I will likely never listen to again because I found out they were horrible people and I can't listen to it and not remember that, not have it be the 1st thing that crosses my mind.

A savage burn for Coldplay at the end haha. I agree with everyone's views in the video, except this Chappell lady seems to take the point further than everyone else. She speaks as though the rest of us don't have to deal with psychos and rude people. It's the poor celebrities getting picked on. Everyone (famous or not) is entitled to basic privacy and personal space. Everyone is entitled to not let the general public demand things like "take off your glasses". But it does come back to celebrities putting themselves in the public eye and taking the money. Obviously if you want the great unwashed to be exposed to your art, and to pay money for it, you are going to have to deal with more people. And statistically, that means more psychos, more rude people. So I think celebrities should accept that they are going to be treated differently, while also enforcing the kinds of boundaries that everyone is entitled to.

While true, I think it's easy for people (the proto-celebrities) to be naïve to these things, especially if they're pushed into the limelight as children. But it's definitely true that the nutcases are always going to be out there so the celebrities have to make their choice. Drop out and return to obscurity (I'm sure many do) or keep going. In the end, it's their choice to make and if they've chosen to keep being a celebrity, they have to acknowledge that they've accepted the risk of the bad stuff, especially if they have attained financial independence (less so for minor celebrities who are basically making a living).

You have to take consideration the context she was coming from when she made those videos last year which was not included by the pop accounts online. Her frustrations came from simultaneously her family being doxxed and stalked, esp her father, and she herself was sa'd while out in the public, kissed without consent (rolling stone interview) Yes all these came to are consequences of fame but also when is enough when she doesnt set these boundaries from the start. she has expressed: "but the appeciation i feel from fans who want to make me feel appreciated in a right way, i feel it so much more than the ones that disregard my boundaries" (hulu faces of music docuseries) true fans knew what she meant, only those with problems with normal human boundaries are twisting it to "she's rude to all fans"

I have this fear for my favorite band, The Warning. Some of the comments from much older fans on their direct socials are just gross and I wonder if they get that sort of behaviour from fans in person. They grew up on social media and fans feel a specific entitlement when it comes to them that I haven’t really seen with other bands.

Fame is good if you do something with it, if it's useful to bring to light things that would otherwise not receive attention. Otherwise is a pain in ass, money is lovely when you earn it with something you have created, but fame is crap especially show business fame because you are not a scientist or a doctor, someone allegedly so intelligent that people keep a distance. Know what I mean?

I wouldn't leave negative comments on anyone's posts. But if I saw someone famous out and about and really liked them I would be torn. I'd want to say something just because I'd feel like I might never get that chance again and would regret it if I didn't. But I think you can tell if someone really doesn't want you to and then I'd leave it.

Robert A. Heinlein commented on the rise of celebrity culture, stating, “The United States has become a place where entertainers and professional athletes are mistaken for people of importance.” This quote reflects Heinlein’s view on the shift in societal values, where individuals in the entertainment and sports industries are often perceived as influential figures, despite their lack of significant contributions to society. I will never understand why so many people think because a person is famous, they don’t deserve personal time for privacy. In 2020, Harry and Meghan were hiding out near the small town. I lived in on Vancouver island. In the beginning, the press have not figured out a way they were there, and the locals all just left him alone. Obviously we know who they were, but if we saw them at the grocery store or at the beach or something, we would just leave them be. When the Prescott hold of where they were, it was madness in our little town. All of a sudden we had all of this paparazzi from all over the world, trying to catch a glimpse of them. They were disappointed, because they were trying to hire a local boat to take them out to the area where the house was they were staying, and they refused to take them.
