But they must have read it somehow. They do know obscure details about Tolkien that only someone who had read most of what he wrote would know. I think they just don't understand Tolkien. They're only surface level fans.

As Angrenost02 stated, they read it. I also think besides not understanding Tolkien, they outright reject what they do get right about what Tolkien put in this work. Some of them in fact despise Tolkien. The "consultant" from Glasgow University, a doctoral candidate, who was one of the ones who replaced Tom Shippey, clearly rejects Tolkien. Her "credentials" were that as a master's student she wrote three or four articles on Tolkien, two of which were published at an obscure university and on the same topic. In other words, she is no expert. Everything she has written, however sparse, is from a CT studies perspective, such as queer studies. This is the type of person Amazon hired. They are trying to recreate Tolkien's work to fit their own ideology. That is why you also get articles written by the like minded types on media stating how this series improves upon Tolkien's lore, not just Jackson's movies, but Tolkien himself! The people who have KZbin channels that go on about how great this series is have clearly read Tolkien. They seem to love Tolkien's work, at least what they understand of it, but hate Tolkien which means they have no idea of their cognitive dissonance since of course you can't separate the work from the man. They reject his own thoughts about his own work in order to replace it with their ideology.

@@Angrenost02 I'm not so sure they did. The CliffsNotes, maybe. But it feels more like someone read it, and told a friend about it. That friend then told another friend, who then told the writers. And this is what we got, at the end of that game of telephone.

In the book Sauron as Annatar also spent CENTURIES working with the elves to perfect their ring-craft. They made countless "lesser rings" (which Gandalf initially thought the ring Bilbo found was one) until they had worked up the skill to create the first of the greater rings (the nine and the seven). Instead, this show has all this happen over a period of DAYS, which just makes the characters come across as even more ridiculously stupid, since they apparently have the memory of a goldfish.

That line is a corruption of two actual lines, one from The Return of the King and one from the Silmarillion. Every time you quote that version, you're only dunking on yourself, and worse, you're quoting TVtropes. "No, [orcs] eat and drink, Sam. The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. I don't think it gave life to the orcs, it only ruined them and twisted them; and if they are to live at all, they have to live like other living creatures." "For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar; and naught that had life of its own, nor the semblance of life, could ever Melkor make since his rebellion in the Ainulindalë before the Beginning: so say the wise."

Exactly. Unfortunately the way RoP has characterised Galadriel goes so far away from Tolkien's legendarium that even with an actress who is more physically suited to Galadriel the show would still be a disgrace. In the chapter 'The Shibboleth of Fëanor' from The Peoples of Middle-earth, of Galadriel it says, "From her earliest years she had a marvellous gift of insight into the minds of others, but judged them with mercy and understanding, and she withheld her good will from none save only Fëanor." The RoP Galadriel is the opposite of Tolkien's Galadriel.

Yeah, Payne and McKay are clearly fans of the films rather than the books. There was a Hollywood Reporter interview with them where they told how they'd pitched the show as a 5 season version of PJ's prologue. There was also some magazine interview where they told of combing through the books to get more details to make their pitch more enticing. So they (and JJ Abrams, who vouched for them) basically tricked Amazon into thinking they were big Tolkien lore nerds, lol. They certainly have no respect for Tolkien. They and their simps pick things from his letters to excuse certain decisions in the show- when they don't even have the rights to said letters.

The writers having the Elves use the same logic as Boromir when it comes to the rings is one of the stupidest writing decisions I've ever seen. "These things might be evil, but rather than rejecting them altogether, let's instead try to use them ourselves against the evil guy who helped make them!" is the EXACT argument that causes Boromir and other Men to fall to the One Ring. Having the Elves use this same reasoning completely undermines the wisdom and nobility of the Elven race. It's dumb enough to reverse the order of the Rings' forging and have Sauron even marginally involved in the making of the Three, but to then go beyond that and have the Elves continue to use the RIngs makes them no different than any other race. Are the Elves flawed? Yes. Are they inherently morally ambiguous and stupid people? Absolutely not.

I have always admired the set designers in the film industry. They are some of the unsung heroes of the business. A set might take weeks to build and only be used for one or two shots. Then they never get any credit, other than being on the end credits, or exposure for their efforts. So it's fantastic when they receive Emmy's, Bafta's and Oscar's. Now we just need the stunts team to get some credit too.

I think George R.R. Martin said it best about Hollywood screenwriters adapting other people's works: "There's a few phrases in Hollywood that you want the screenwriter to feel he's free to make it his own. And too many screenwriters do make it their own, even if they are adapting Dickens or Tolkien or Shakespeare or whoever you want. They decide to make it their own. But they never make it better. Because usually, the people who are making their own are simply not as good as the people who wrote it in the first place."

It has been suggested that Theo is the future Witch-King of Angmar. That seems plausible enough - Tolkien said that three of the Nazgûl were (IIRC) “three great lords of high Numenorean race”, but not which Nazgûl they became. He also says in Appendix B that the Nazgûl first appeared in Second Age 2251. On the other hand, ROP is not very careful with the timeline.

One of the big problems for fantasy and scifi in particular is that activism has gotten its hold on them moreso even than in other genres, with that fake "Bechdel test" being forced into just about everything to be "morally compliant". Another problem is that these genres are just not taken seriously by Hollywood as legit art or drama- look how rarely they get in the major awards categories even as nominees. So in the past years they've been putting the unproven writers/directors/actors on these projects and saving the actual talent for other things.

All 17 rings were meant to go to elves (300-500years of infiltration & deception down the drain.) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) - Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Noldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves as a cursed name meaning “the abhorred” and deceiver! Similar to his former name as Gorthaur. (Correction - The Sindar Elves in Beleriand gave Mairon the name Gorthaur, meaning "dread abomination," while others called him Sauron, meaning "the abhorred" or "the abominable," a play on his original name. Gorthaur was when he ruled in the first age as lord of all werewolves in isle of werewolves called Taur Ín Gaurhoth) After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Celebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, & evil in the form of Sauron had been defeated twice already in the past. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤ There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted! Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion: 1200 Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens. c. 1500 The Elven-smiths instructed by Sauron reach the height of their skill. They begin the forging of the Rings of Power. c. 1590 The Three Rings are completed in Eregion. c. 1600 Sauron forges the One Ring in Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Celebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron. 1693 War of the Elves & Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden." 'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them. But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained. These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One." - The 3 Elven Rings are not susceptible to “The One Ring” in any direct way.. They’re only tied by fate to lose their power if Sauron is defeated completely & absolutely. As they were made by the elves and as always they make things for a purpose and pour their literal spirit into things they create. So if Sauron is defeated then the three rings power will fade and basically become almost useless or diminished versions of their original design since by this era magic has bled from the world by a huge degree thanks to Morgoth’s poisoning the world itself with his very essence that he poured into it. Called The Long Defeat By The Elves and The Men Of The West.

Tragic what they have done to Celebrimbor. He was nothing like that in the book. Celebrimbor created the three Elven rings that Sauron never corrupted.
@Makkaru112
@Makkaru112 6 күн бұрын
Exactly. The 3 were forged by Celebrimbor AFTER the 1 Ring was made. Made in response to the threat of the One gaining dominion over the lesser rings and their bearers. We haven't got there yet. Elronds concerns over Sauron controlling the Three makes NO SENSE in this timeline. That particular threat has not materialised yet. The One Ring doesn't exist yet. This is CRUCIAL, it's not a minor oversight. Sauron is not even aware of the Three until he creates the One. They've wrote themselves into a corner and are hoping people don't notice. Please! Don't they understand Tolkien fans at all haha? Probably not because they certainly don't understand Tolkien. Many events from this show don’t ever reveal that they’re indeed separated by 500 to 1000 years a pop. It wasn’t happening all within the same 5 lol. - Remember, Amazon's 2nd age is not Tolkien. It’s a perverted vision of what should have been, if the show leaders & chief writers had stayed true to the original canon. but we both know, fellow Tolkien Lover, that this is an absolute violation of the vision & canon that the great Professor laid down. Really what our speculations Should be is how far from or how deep are they going to take their perversions & distortions. Amazons Rings of Power are a catastrophic failure. It's a bunch of mumbo jumbo BS that is meant for the uninitiated! It is eye candy at best........ at best! It is a tragedy what Bezos has done with this sacred work! Tolkien rolls over endlessly in his grave, and I weep endlessly as well. A sign of the times my friend, a sign of the times! The timeline presented in Amazon's Rings of Power series does not align with the original Second Age canon created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The series makes several changes and combines events that are separated by hundreds to thousands of years in the original source material, leading to inconsistencies and contradictions. Many Tolkien fans and purists have criticized the show for its departure from the original vision and disrespect for the lore created by the professor. The series is seen as a disappointment and a sign of the times, with some fans even claiming that it is a violation of the sacred works of Tolkien. Sacred because so many peoples lives were saved and transformed by all of his scholarly work. ❤

In later writings Tolkien said that the Blue Wizards were vital in the resistance against Sauron in the East. They were sent in almost a special mission to go East and keep down the numbers of Men who would join Sauron's army. And they were indeed successful in this, and without the Blue Wizards efforts in the East, the armies of Gondor, Rohan, and the "resistance" led by Gandalf would have failed as Sauron's armies would have swelled and straight out over-whelmed them. There are also some less than kind writings about Radagast, who basically became lazy. He was a "good" person, by aiding Gandalf a few times, but with regards to his mission became lazy. And in truth, Gandalf actually knew more about birds and nature than Radagast, which was supposed to be Radagast's "specialty."

Yeah, I'm actually more offended that he'd talk about Christians like that than the image from ROP. Next thing we know he'll start doing sociopolitical vids again and that went _soo_ well the last time. I'm not saying no Christian would get offended but at least wait till it happens and get a screenshot so he'll have receipts. The way he did it makes it looks like he hates Christians just because they're Christians.

@@AClockworkHellcat the author of the video stated that the image of Annatar emerging from the dusk and the flames could be offensive for the Christians. And in the last Olympics opening we saw a "parody" of the Last Supper. In any case I didn't feel offended because both performances were horrendous and hated by a majority.

At 11:14. For a Christian who knows Scripture, this scene would not be blasphemous. The angel of darkness would disguise himself as an angel of light to deceive the unwary.

They don’t even follow the movies either. They’ve got all the rights to all 3 books and their detailed appendices which cover several chronological events throughout his other 26 books which were written first before trilogy got published.

In defense (wait until the end to bash me), you CAN be a fan of something, and still like a poor adaptation of it. But the circumstances have to be unique. I'll use myself as an example. Eragon and the Inheritance Cycle books. Years ago, I watched Eragon. Thought it was good. Years later, i see the books at my local library. I then realized that no sequel was made. When i went to find out why, I learned it was bashed, which confused me. I read the book and learned why, and I agree with them. I then finished the book series. I still enjoy the movie, but I also understand why it got the hate it did.
