It's kinda the How To Train Your Dragon dilemma. The How to Train Your Dragon films are some of the absolute worst book to movie adaptations ever in the sense that the only things carried over is the series' title and some superficial names but basically nothing else. Might as well be called Somewhat Friendly Dragons although I will say they don't shit all over the source material like other adaptations. And yet like this, they're good as standalone products.

Whenever I see this show, I’m immediately reminded of the Garfield Show (the CGI show, not the original 80s one). The plots are way more extravagant and crazy and the comedy is definitely more in your face and slapsticky rather than the more laid-back, sarcastic style of the comics. Overall, not the worst show, but the people are going to get the most out of it are kids who will grow up watching this and get oddly nostalgic of it 10 years later.

I do think that The Garfield Show was a lot more accurate to it's source material than Big Nate is. The characters still keep their respective personalities, such as Garfield still being lazy and witty. Not to mention the wacky situations add it's own dimension to the show not exactly seen before, but still feel accurate to the Garfield franchise, which is important because Garfield has gone through a lot of evolutions, so it's important that this one should stick out. Very underrated show imo.

As someone who became a fan of the strips (not really the novels I only have a few), I gotta say it’s easier to take in the show if you treat it as like an alternate timeline/ universe, I still enjoy the show and I very much like the moments where in the background shots there’s moments of the trio just being stupid and hanging out but if you compare it to the actual strips/novel versions it’s pretty infuriating how the show interpreted the characters. I actually had more of a problem with DeeDee, she’s is a theater kid who is very passionate in acting and her arts, yes, but the way the show portrayed her is that she is capable of doing EVERYTHING that comes her way and that’s not it. Students and teachers cant tolerate her because she’s way too into acting and is over dramatic when she doesn’t need to be. She’s like the emotional standpoint of problems, but the way the show made her is that she is just good at everything and is more capable than the trio. I also really despise the way they went about writing Francis, Francis has nerdy traits but he is not the stereotypical nerd in the strips or novels, he can catch up to Nate and Teddy and isn’t physically incapable or weak, he literally partakes sports alongside Teddy and Nate to show this. The reason why I like Francis so much as a character because he managed to break the nerd stereotype but still keep it? Yes, he keeps this trivia book wherever he goes, knows the most useless information just because he thinks it’s fun learning it, and is just more logical/academically smart. But he literally joins in on banter and shows a more snarky/sarcastic side where he isn’t afraid to put his input in situations Nate comes up with. The trio is the literal definition of a friend group that consists of stupid middle school boys, and that’s how they’re supposed to be and Peirce did such a good job at showing that? To see Francis’ character butchered to pieces like this and see him fall into the “I’m scared of everything and I get nauseous at things that make me nervous” was such a disappointment to see. But other than characters falling into tropes and feeling out of character the show is generally funny and I’m glad that Peirce is able to have some input into the show’s writing as well that’s fun to see

Finally someone who gets Big Nate. I always related to Nate- which was especially rare with male protagonists because I was a girl- because I constantly got in trouble for doodling in class and being a total chatterbox. And I was also envious of how real Nate’s friend group seemed. Even as a kid I could grasp the concept of Nate typically over exaggerating Mrs. Godfrey’s “evilness” and Nate’s better qualities like how he would always stick up for his friends. And Nate may have not been entirely studious but he wasn’t god awful at school. He’s a master at chess, and when he able to be artistic with his assignments he tended to do great on them. This show just doesn’t seem to understand how all the characters relationships mesh together.

Big Nate was probably the best "middle school" type book series from when I was growing up - even as a little kid I remember seeing that big Nate was quite a few steps above literally everything else I could get my hands on to read and I'm glad somebody has finally gone more in depth on why the novels were so great. With that said - I don't care how funny and witty the show is, or how well it executes It's animation or "new" personalities - It's still an adaptation. I'm so tired of people wanting to write their own stories and characters using pre-existing stuff, instead of making a new IP - they have to morph an old one into their own personal vision. Just make your own show - instead of changing virtually every character to fit your needs. It's an ADAPTATION, so write it like one instead of changing everything because you couldn't afford to pitch your own original show with all of your own characters. Great vid by the way, very on point :)
@animezilla44862 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but when you are adapting a series that's based on a comic book or graphic novel some things are going to change you can just take everything from a book and put it into a movie or TV series it doesn't always work like that sometimes you're going to have to change characters or settings
@SimeonJester2 жыл бұрын
@@animezilla4486 I couldn't disagree more - you can have a character act and behave in the same way, have their friends retain the same chemistry they had from the books, and retain the same vibe and setting when you apply it to a show. If it's an adaptation you need to actually make it so - sure you can change what the story might be and the goal of the characters, but you can't just change the personalities and DNA of 70% of the characters. There is a difference between putting a character in a new situation and completely changing him or her all together. That's like if peter Jackson decided to make Gandalf all silly and stupid because he thought that would fit his movies better - you gotta stick to the source material - you can't just pick and choose which characters change completely and which ones stay the same.
@animezilla44862 жыл бұрын
@@SimeonJester it's important to stick to the source material your right but at the same time there is no such thing as a one hundred percent accurate of the source material true that Nate has changed very different from the comics whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on how people feel about that but most importantly how does the creator of Big Nate feels about it. The story was very spicy and i like also how there are important new characters in each book while still keeping the old ones. With the wimpy kid i felt kind of... bored?? The characters were more annoying to me than likeable even though a character with flaws can be likeable. There werent many memorable chatacters outside of the heffley family and rowley. While in the movies they took the secondary roles and gave them greater purpoise as well as giving them back. Also the movies had satifying endings. With character development and stuff that would never happen in the books. For example.. we have so far 16 books of the wimpy kid and greg still hasnt made good interaction with any girl. Does anyone remember holly hills in the books? Her character did absolutely nothing other than just stand there and be the "popular girl". In the movies there was relationship development between holly and greg and in the end they even become a couple. And the books still follow around the same pattern everything goes wrong for greg and in the end nothing particularly great happens other than things going back to how they were at the start. Same book every pattern.. and its filled with secondary characters that play a minor role and then disappear.

Besides that, I think it's great so far. I'm especially impressed with how GOOD IT LOOKS! Like I was scared about it being 3D, especially with Nate's hair, but they made it work and I think that's amazing. It looks so good.

It reminds me of how the Captain Underpants movie adapted the books. Quite a few changes but still enjoyable as someone who loved the books. Also please don’t say it’s like the Middle School movies. The actual Middle School books were suprisingly dark while the movie was pure stupidity.

The thing for me is it just seems too different. I grew up with the graphic novels and comics, and the reason I loved them so much was their entertaining slice of life plots, the realistic characters, and the comedy. The comics specifically were just so cleverly written and I love them, especially since the characters felt like real people. The show just seems to be another generic kids' cartoon to me, barely faithful to the source material. idk if I will check it out.
@e1iteyoshi9982 жыл бұрын
So basically it's a good show if you've never checked out the source material but it's lackluster if you've followed the source material. Is that the best way to look at it?

It's honestly sad how much more cinematic and beautiful this show looks compared to the diary of a wimpy kid animated MOVIE adaptation Why does a literal SHOW look more like a movie than the doawk MOVIE?

Honestly Big Nate is still going strong, after the graphic novel ended, some things carried over to the comics, like dee dee, and Nate no longer hating Jenny, making Jenny more then a 2d love interest, adding a bit of character, with out losing to much of the prior comedy from said lone interest plot

The fact that after they changed the name of cheesy poofs Lincoln Pierce ACTUALLY made a comic where deedee asks how cheesy poofs and cheese curls are diffrent

Sounds like a Catscratch situation: Its an adaptation of a comic that BLATANTLY ignores the source material but what it does is so strangely different that it doesnt even feel like an adaptation.

I've been waiting for a TV show of Big Nate FOR YEARS! Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to see a cartoon or TV adaptation, but in 2D. Instead we got 3D which is fine, but if this is going to be an adaptation of the book series, I think 2D wouldve worked. Oddly enough the animation for the show is better than the Disney Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie remake.
@artpenguinharry2 жыл бұрын
There was originally going to be a 2D animated series based on Big Nate for NBC's morning block, with the creator of the comics being offered by Lee Mendelson of Peanuts back when it first appeared on newspapers in 1991, but unfortunately, many, if not all, of their Saturday morning cartoons got canned by the network which led to the animated series being in development hell for almost 30 years.

Ya know, I’m only now hearing about the Big Nate TV Show because of your video, and I only have one suggestion: The animation art style genuinely freaks me out a little. Plus, it doesn’t have the same or similar “aesthetic” like the original. I believe the best way they could’ve handled was to do something like the Captain Underpants movie, as the movie is more appealing and has the comics have a similar art style with Big Nate. Not having to have a movie budget, but something similar (Also I can’t even look at the video footage, it’s too freaky for me-)

It would’ve been nice if Nate talked to the camera because he’s THAT full of enough that he believes that someone would make a tv show of his life, with the rest of the cast poking fun at him.

Feels like people who made this show were big fans of those Netflix Captain Underpants cartoons, THEY ARE GOOD but the comics do seem more like something that are a more calming and chill read. Not something that makes you laugh or have your heart beat from the events happening.

I'm not familiar with the Big Nate books, so I guess I didn't have a lot of those problems you have and enjoyed it overall. The shorts really did a disservice to the actual show's reputation. I guess they had a lot of money spent into it, since they even got Jack Black as a guest voice actor and use licensed music a lot.

About the whole thing about Nate’s moral compass and him being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I remember this arc in the comic strips that had Nate delivering a love letter from Jenny (his crush) to Artur (A nemesis of his) and thinks about tossing the letter to prevent the delivery, but ultimately decides against it, since it would be just a jerky thing to do. Nate does have a sense of right and wrong, and when he can get away with doing wrong, and him getting in trouble is usually from him being in a bad spot placed by something or someone, like when he secretly gave an funny yet insulting drawing of Ms. Godfrey to chad, in which he laughs out loud and gets them both a trip to the principals office.
