A few more fun facts: 1) Val Kilmer did all his own singing in this movie. 2) they actually used the head mold of Peter Cushing they made for this movie and laser scanned the interior of the mold to make the digital mask they used to 'resurect' Grand Moff Tarkin for 'Rogue One, a Star Wars Story', 21 years after his death. The studio recieved permission from his family to use his likeness in the film, but only had 2D images to go off until somebody remembered the mask still existed.

A few things. They got some really big stars in this. First of all, the spy who ended up crushed in the car was played by Omar Sharif, known from huge films like Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. And the bookseller from the weird backwards scene was Peter Cushing, known from the old Hammer horror films, but you'd probably know him best as Governor Tarkin in Star Wars. Many years later, long after Peter Cushing had died, Star Wars brought back Governor Tarkin in Rogue One. Top Secret was a great help to them, because there was a cast of his face for the weird prosthetic, and they used that to recreate his face digitally.

Val Kilmer actually sang the songs in this. That's his own voice. He's not lip syncing. (Well I mean he is but only in the sense that all music videos are done that way, with the artist recording their song in a studio first then later lip syncing to it when filming the video.) His performance in this is what landed him his serious role later in the Doors movie. They knew he's good at singing as well as acting
@Grethrey12310 ай бұрын
Apparently when the movie The Doors came out, surviving band members listened to the soundtrack and said they couldn’t tell the difference between Kilmer’s voice and the actual recordings of Jim Morrison, Kilmer was just that good. So sad what’s happened to him now

"It's lesser known, I don't know why" It bombed on release. It wasn't the easiest movie to market. A lot of the posters just featured the cow, which, out of context, is still funny but doesn't tell you anything about the movie. It's a weird spoof: It's an Elvis movie, but it's also a spy movie that's Cold War and WWII at the same time. Airplane is easier to wrap your brain around: it's a spoof of disaster movies. Elvis movies and WWII spy movies were passe by that time, whereas disaster movies were enjoying massive BO popularity. "If you had to choose..." My favorite of their's is "Kentucky Fried Movie" just because I'm a martial arts fan and "Fistful of Yen" is one of the best Hollywood martial arts comedies ever. But out of all the rest of their movies, Top Secret is my favorite because I feel like it had the most creative and inspired ideas. There may be funnier moments, but their high point as innovative, comedic film-makers were the backwards scene and the underwater fight scene.

They put effort into movies before CG came around and made everyone lazy. CG has a place, but look at 70s and 80s and practical effects always looked better. The Fly with Goldblum, the makeup work in that movie was astounding, amongst many many others. As for comedies, Naked Gun, this one and Airplane are great examples of them putting in the work. Think of the sight gags that maybe take up 5 seconds of screen time, but probably took all day or longer to do. That doesnt happen anymore, too time consuming and expensive, so CG it is.

I had the privilege of watching this with the creators, as part of a talk+screening a couple of years ago. They mentioned how it was viewed as their failure, not doing well at the box office, and how much of a good experience it was for them to watch it with a theater full of fans who cheered and guffawed during the screening. I cheered loudest for the backwards scene, but the audience as a whole reacted more strongly during the underwater scene. It is my favorite film of theirs. If you would like to see where it all started, you might check out their first film: "Kentucky Fried Movie". It mainly makes fun of the Bruce Lee film, "Enter the Dragon".

This movie has quite a few brilliantly surreal moments. My biggest surprise was to discover the German commander first seen on the train with Nick was the same actor who played Dim in A Clockwork Orange. Unless I read this, I would never have been able to tell it was the same actor; the characters and portrayals being so different. The other thing I love about these directors' movies is their use of name actors known for their dramatic roles. Omar Sharif starred and appeared in the epics Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. In Top Secret, he's picking up dog doo and having a radio antenna erection within a crushed car. You can't get too different than that.
