I come back in a few hours with a damp sponge to rework any bits that dried wonky. Just press, don’t rub, to moisten the bit you need to fix. ❤

I may even try one of the items one day. I especially like watching you do the mystery patterns. You are so good at figuring things out.

THANK YOU for pointing out that one should pin using the "star formation" like when tightening wheel lug nuts (6:10). The first time I blocked I just started at one corner and went around (as my logical brain told me to) and it was oh-so-wonky by the time I got to the end. 🤦‍♀️ PS: got extra glue? SLIME TIME!!! 😂

I cover my box with cling wrap first, because sometimes the colour leeches also if there is a tiny bit of glue that didn’t dissolve the paper can stick. When I stiffen bowls or plates I also cover them with cling wrap, it is just a precaution & a plus side is it is easier to remove. Love your doilies & can’t wait to see your curtain too. ❤️❤️👏👏🇬🇧

Nice! I do this with ball Christmas ornaments and tiny balloons. After it dries you just pop the balloon! There's a few channels here on youtube that show the process. I just use a higher ratio of glue to give them a little more stability in case they fall off the tree or something. Lots of doilie patterns can be easily converted into spheres.

You did really beautiful work on this, Corinna. So lovely! I'm currently in the process of making the baubles for the Irish Opera bags. I'm making one black, one white, out of Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton. Both the grosgrain ribbons and the raw Banglori silk arrived. After a few false starts on the baubles, I decided to go down from my 4.25mm to a 3.125mm, as they just looked way too massive. Cannot wait to tag you on Insta. Lots of love & many hugs!

If you pin the center hole with a couple of pins angled out it will help keep it from getting wonky or over stretched. It will also help allow you to shape more textured doilies and keep it from setting to pointed in spots, etc...

That doily is gorgeous! I taught myself to crochet when I was 7 or 8 years old. All I could afford was cotton thread, a small hook, and a book of doily patterns. There soon were doilies everywhere. I've been crocheting my whole life. As for the glue method, I think it's genius. My only concern is pinning it to a cardboard box without putting a sheet of plastic wrap between them. Doesn't the doily get glued to the box?

I did a lot of snowflakes one year for Christmas gifts and used the old sugar starch method. Worked well, but I did notice that in storing them that bugs were drawn to them so I had to wash and store them with no starch and re-starch them every year. I was wondering about using glue and I am going to try it. I only have one doily at this time but plan on doing some for my cousin as a gift. Thank you.

I just commented about using this for Christmas ornaments myself. I've been doing it for years; and it works great. I've used it on lots of different colored thread, too, and it doesn't seem to dull the vibrant colors or the metallic sparkly ones.

I bought the garden kneeling foam pads and bamboo skewers to make my own blocking board. My cats decided it was a new toy at first. They kept pulling out the bamboo skewers I had cut to size, out off the board. It stretched the holes ! Then every thing became sloppy. For my crochet squares. I said forget this, splurged on a block board, with rust resistant metal pegs. These will hold, and holes won't get stretched. I can do more than one block at a time. I couldn't layer them on my home made one. Too weak. I really want to make this Snowflake doily, it is gorgeous ❤ will use your method. Not sure when I'll get started on it. May be for 2024 Christmas year. I wouldn't get one made for this year. I am slow with my crochet.

Oh, I tried this last year. When I made snowflakes, I got through doing two of them, and had a visceral reaction to the texture of the glue and the cotton crochet. I really didn’t like it. If this works, though, maybe I should give it another try. I would also like to try the old-fashioned, dipping and starch method. I wonder though, I made some beautiful black pieces of crochet, if I dip it in the glue, will it dim the color?

Is this cotton or acrylic or ? Do you do this with all types of fibers?
@justvintagecrochet

This is cotton, you can do this with acrylic, the difference is cotton absorbs while acrylic is plastic and won’t absorb, so if you do this with acrylics you will get a set but it will only be surface set and it won’t last as long

Are there at concerns with the cardboard sticking to the doily, colour leaking through from the print on the box, or discolouring over time?

I’ve used this brand of glue for many purposes for decades. The only discoloration of this glue has come from dust or dyes/paints or moisture. As long as it stays dry it stays clear. Sunlight does not seem to affect it. Tried and true.
