Something to keep in mind is that sports medicine has evolved greatly the last couple of decades. Surguries that were once not available or were experimental, are now routine. I wish this young man a long and healthy career.

And it is precisely in the last two decades, as specified in the video, that we have seen a complete lack of 7’2+ players who can play without staggering amounts of injuries. Sports medicine has not evolved in a way that prevents long thin players from getting hurt. And the recoveries for the injuries they’re more susceptible to are very long. TL;DR, in the past few decades specifically, nothing has changed at all in regard to this topic. We can only wish the best for Wemby

He does have a good team. He went up to the EuroLeague at 17 to prove he could play, he did that in spades. After that year he was basically a lock to be number 1 in the NBA draft two years later so his team had him move back down to the French league so he only had to play once a week during the season, and didn't have to travel a lot. So the last two years hes basically been load managing, and just working on his development.

I hear a lot of people talking about how bulking up decreases injury risk, but is that necessarily true. When you're 7'3+ tall, doesn't having too much weight put a lot of strain on your body. Yao Ming's injury was stress fracture, which I imagine was partially caused by his weight of 310 pounds. Being super tall increases your injury risk, but not by as much as you might think. There are two reasons why. First, a lot of tall people have gigantism. People with gigantism are far more likely to be weak and get injured simply because they don't grow the same way as normal tall people and their musculoskeletal system cannot handle their height. Victor Wembanyama doesn't have gigantism, so his risk is already reduced. The second problem is that there are so few people that tall, so you often have to make a sacrifice. You don't have a large enough pool to choose people who are going to be as agile and injury-resistant as the shorter people in the NBA. I mean there aren't enough tall people in the world to find one as agile as the guards in the NBA, so of-course they are going to have a higher chance of getting injured. Injuries are highly inversely correlated with your control over your body. Skill in manoeuvring your body and understanding where your body parts are at all times will reduce your risk of injury, especially in the fast-paced athleticism-based game.
@KB-qk1ic2 жыл бұрын
Like everything else, there's a healthy balance. Put on too much muscle and you could easily become injury prone due the loss of flexibility and just too much weight on a frame not built to handle it.
@holo28692 жыл бұрын
Bulking up help protect against injury because the muscles protect the bones and cartilages. There's just no way to determine the ideal proportion, more so individually. But with today's NBA with less body banging, tall players will also have longer careers like the smaller players.
@aantoine58192 жыл бұрын
Yes being taller does means greater likelihood of injury so adding mass also makes it more difficult on your joints etc. That’s why these super bigs have short career spans, but they’re careers will be shorter if they don’t put on weight, because he’s not gonna be able to battle in the post if he remains a twig

Being lanky is worse
@leafacademy2 жыл бұрын
If they don’t neglect tendon strengthening then the big man can last a lot longer than what we have previously seen. It is okay to build muscle as long as you also focus on flexibility and tendon strengthening. If the medical team can work on day by day form reconstruction, players like d rose, Shaun Livingston could have avoided their injuries - for both of them tendon neglect and form was their downfall. It is is inevitable for it to happen to players like ja morant and Zion Williamson if the trainers don’t put focus on that aspect of their injury prevention.

What I hear is there have been such a small number of tall guys in the NBA history .. yet the video keeps comparing the ratios of injury across athlete heights categories. I'm no statistician but to me that makes zero sens statistically speaking, you cannot just compare the average number of a group of thousands units with the average number of a group of less than 20 units. So it's a nice video, raises an interesting point, but the statistical biases just make it irrelevant

Thanks Jimmy! What I like most about Victor is that his attitude is so much different than your usual players that all this hype goes around, he's said in interviews, even on this video, that he just wants to have fun playing basketball, he's just great while doing that. A lot of prospects think like this, but most in the first picks don't. At his age he seems very level headed, I've never met him so it's just a assumption. Also, and for me it's the biggest thing, both is parents are accomplished sportsmen, his dad a long jumper. He said that he learned from a young age how to run properly. I think that sounds simple at face value, but having a professional in a different sport based around being tall and running teach you how to run, jump and "fall" properly is massive, I believe it's the reason WHY he's so fast and agile in his frame, he's had that since his father taught him. With this, he didn't just suddenly spurt into his height, he's apparently been taller than most his age for a while. This means that he's super used to his body, his physiology is used to his body and tensions, as it develops - we're talking about a kid here so I won't describe him like a machine, but he's grown up in this form. All of this should reduce his injury proneness, and puts him in such a good position. On the other end, accidents happen, other players happen, and so injuries happen - to all players - he knows this, his family and coaches and everyone who cares knows this, and I'm sure he'll get the right support to ensure his longevity - cause this kid loves the game and he's not just gonna want to become the best as priority, he's gonna want to enjoy it for as long as possible if I had to take a guess.
@solidstatedrive2 жыл бұрын
With all that worry around his frame, I too would risk everything to have this kid in my franchise and watch him - possibly - probably - bring a different play into the nba, and I'm so excited to see him get it. Raptors fan here, but for some reason I see this kid ending up with the Spurs.

Just like all scientific disciplines, sports medicine is always moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future more and more of these athletic giants are able to maintain their physical health longer into their careers. Not to mention changes in managing and coaching regarding load management; play him 25-30 minutes a game, 50-60 games a year for ten or twelve seasons rather than 35-40 minutes a game as many games as he's healthy for six or eight seasons.

Love your videos, especially this one! Masterfully paced and produced. Your voice is honey, and insightful comments and research are amazing. Thank you! As for the percentages being SERIOUSLY stacked against Victor, that is simply undeniable. I've been a lifelong Blazers fan since 1979, and I've seen Sam Bowie 7'2" out of Kentucky (drafted along with Jordan) break his leg at the actual game in Portland's Memorial Coliseum. Then we had Greg Oden - another #1 pick - go down with repeated knee injuries. Both were generational talents in their own right had they stayed healthy, and therein is the cruel rub - they simply can't. In Victor's case, he's obviously bright and coordinated, but he will need to add another 50 pounds in muscle to be in the NBA...and his height and frame will suffer as a result. The writing is on the wall. Perhaps the X factor in all of this is that sports medicine and treatments for high-end professional athletes have never been better, and I hope Victor can rely on science and medicine to extend his basketball career. Regardless of talent or physical stats, he seems like a really good human being. I am rooting for you Victor!

I disagree with the statement that "only" 3 of the 26 super-tall players made the HOF, that seems like a lot to me, considering the amount of players that have played in the nba. I did some rough math using data i found on google and it turns out only 4,2 % of all players ever made the HOF, however of your listed 26, a whopping 11,5 % made it, so it is nearly three times as likely for a super tall person to get into the HOF. You also have to consider that these people are just extremely rare, meaning that it is much less likely that they are super athletic, tough or skilled because they are closer to the normal person, just a lot taller and therefore recruited. I have the same doubts with Victor that i have with Zion, their bodies just seem too different to stay healthy, but Victor has this serious amount of skill as you mentioned, and in the current NBA that is the most important, which makes him hard to pass up on at #1. You just can't throw that away because you know he might get injured.

Rewatching the beginning of the video again after watching the end really drives home the point. It's hard to talk about this kid like lebron when you have these injury risks shadowing over him. As usual with jimy, his analysis isn't very statistically sound, though. He does have a point in tall players being injury prone, but the group 7.3 ft tall or above is literally too amall a sample size to draw any valid conclusions from it. The way vic moves and his physique certainly don't give me anxiety like zion always has, it looks quite sustainable on screen.

Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!

For this kid to make it he needs the help of MODERN HEALTH & TRAINING: Trainers should give him Low/No impact excercises to maintain his joints as well as Food supplements that strengthen bones and joints.
@balbonits2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, his joints are the weakest in his frame. Instead of just bulking up willy nilly, get him to swim a lot. The cardio and muscle development related to the activity is perfect for those that need less impact on their joints, while also building core strength that's also a common issue with big men when they start working on their post game. The best case/evidence I got is Tim Duncan. His longevity is underrated, for how long he played at a high level as a PF. Along with his style of play, which I'd recommend to emulate 100%, his physique is a perfect example of a balanced development of "not too heavy, nor too light." He can post up people like Dwight, and still finesses his way in.

I'm highjacking this comment thread because i was about to come here and say the same thing. I would also like to add that adding weight would be the wrong the to do. His frame wasnt made to carry a lot of weight. The problem with 7'0 just comes down to one thing and that's physics. Majority of peoples weight is above the knees and the mode weight you have the more pressure you put on the knees. Now add running and jumping on a basketball court for many years and thats more pressure on your knees, legs, foot, and back. If you look at basketball players these are the areas that are affected while they are playing and after they retire. To minimize this for 7"0 they shouldn't add weight just strengthen their muscles and joints. Best theory that has the most success is physical therapy rehab workouts. It reaches you to strengthen all your muscles instead of your main ones.

@@AcousticOlli that ain't true at all...that's some straight up boooool sheeeet. SMH, there's many cases of people growing additional inches up into 19, 20, and 21....you must not be familiar with medicine (I'm in PA school btw).

I’ve been following Vic for a while now and I agree that potential injury is a real concern. But if he maxes out his potential, he could literally be one of the greatest players we’ve ever seen.

I think there’s 2 main determining factors that will make victor different than any other big man career and injury wise. 1) everyone talks about his weight and how he’s too light, however I think this works in his favour. He’s less likely to get serious injuries when he’s on the slimmer side because his body will be under significantly less stress. Less weight = less body stress = less injuries. 2) the way he plays is so so key here. Although he may not be a lights out shooter yet, his form is extremely solid and I’m almost certain he’ll turn out to be a great shooter. When this is combined with the fact that his post move is more based on fakes and spins, rather than going body to body down low, it significantly decreases the physicality of his game. I think that by decreasing the physicality his body will stay healthy. He’s an amazing prospect and I’m very excited to see him in the league.

Less weight doesn’t equal less injuries.. good try tho. I could refute that with the TALLER you are the MORE LIKELY you are to get injured. The nba is physical.. funny how you guys only mention offense like he isn’t going to have to bang down low all game on defense which will put SIGNIFICANT toll on his body especially which him being so light. His height will only mean so much when Putting shoulders three him backing I’m down. Hopefully the kid does stay healthy.

Good point Jonathan King. Even though he’s a massive human being his body being on the slim side will help out because there is far less weight for those knees to carry. Just hoping those constant little nagging injuries don’t hold him back his whole career. I can definitely see lots of pulled hamstrings, ankle sprains and probably a Lisfranc injury or two in his future. I do hope he can avoid them though. I’m rooting for him to be great.

After watching your video, I went to watch some of his highlights, and he's definitely an unique player. But I did notice a few things. Firstly is his ability on the offensive end, most of the highlights are pick and roll dunk and fast break dunk, but I haven't seen any one on one attack and the offence didn't seem to centre around him. Not sure if it's because of the highlights or him being a young player in his team. This reminds me of porzingis, who is becoming more of a 3pt spot up shooter rather than capable of getting a bucket with ease. Secondly is his recovery speed on defensive end, definitely is quick on his feed, but he might struggle when guarding a heavy player like Jorkic or Embiid. Baby Yao was also skinny so in order to be competitive in nba, Yao bulked up quite a bit, but that also increased his risk of injury.

I was just about to say "I hope he watches this, takes the constructive critiques to heart, and does his best to protect himself from injuries by developing good habits" but then I saw his comment on this video! Here's hoping you go on to become one of the GOATs, Victor! Make sure to watch a lot of Larry Bird and Michael Jordan videos -- they have the work ethic. And keep a good attitude like Magic Johnson. You'll get there, bro! I'm looking forward to watching your career!

Somebody needs to tell this dude about Ralph Sampson, one half of that dynamic frontcourt of the Houston Rockets who put the defending champs the Lakers on their backs in 1986 WCF, along with Hakeem Olajuwon.
