Thanks for another great video, Jxmy! Jordan's 69 point game was the game that started my love of basketball. I was a bored 14 yr old on a weekend afternoon that was trying to find something to watch on tv. At that point I knew nothing about basketball. It just seemed like a really boring game in general. While flipping through channels the excitement of the commentators caught my attention. They were so excited about this Michael Jordan guy. Because of their excitement I had to see what the big deal was. I became so engrossed in the game that I hadn't realized I'd watched the rest of it. After that I was hooked. I was an instant Jordan and Bulls fan. I watched every Chicago Bulls game that I could find. It is so cool to know that my 1st game was a very historic one. Sorry about my rambling and thanks again Jxmy!

I’m glad that you were able to witness greatness in an era of basketball that was with the mindset that defense wins championships. The fans of today’s NBA have no idea how tough they played the game. When Jordan retired there are plenty of my friends that quit watching basketball. Today’s NBA is geared towards scoring and the rules reflect that. When you have a player that can just stand at the top of the key and go full steam ahead and either get fouled or have the lane open let’s you see how the game has changed

@@aidanb1129 uh...no. The "Game score" formula that this video is based off was created in the 2000s ;) The 1978 that you are talking about, is the fact that what the "game score" is based on, it can't tell what players did before 1978, because the specific stats that are needed weren't tracked before 1978.
@slothbin4 жыл бұрын
So I decided to look those games up and have come up with some answers. Simple answer is: poor shooting percentages, high fouls and turnovers, and lastly 0 three-pointers. Your first example he achieved a 44.4 GmSc (Larry Bird was 44.8 for 100th spot at the time of the video) and went 48.3 FG%, 71.4 FT%, 5 PF, 4 TOV. Second example he achieved a 34.9 GaSc and went 55.6 FG%, 60.0 FT%, 4 PF, 5 TOV. A point to note, a 2-pointer will net you 1.7 points towards your GaSc, whereas a 3-pointer will net you 2.7 points. Those 2 games he went 0 from 0 at the 3 point line, whereas today 3's are far more prevalent. Also a miss for a 2 or a 3 will cost you 0.7 to your GaSc regardless of which one, so there's potential to earn more through hitting 3's than 2's as the punishment is the same for missing, yet a whole point extra in GaSc if you get it. Bonus fact: ORB are worth much more than DRB, and his 25 TRB game he went 6/19. Bonus bonus fact: steals are worth more than assists and blocks. Bonus bonus bonus fact: on the wiki for the formula it says it only applies from 1978 onwards, however the stats on the top 100 list only apply from the 83-84 season onwards. This doesn't affect Olajuwon though

Listen. There is 4 letters why mj is the “goat”. E.S.P.N. ESPN wasn’t round when wilt played. All we have is some games,film,and stats. Wilt holds 71 records. (Not 72 anymore,Russ broke one) When espn started. All that was on was mj. Mj also played in a league where it was a bit laid back. In wilts era it wasn’t easy. I’m not saying Michel isn’t one of the greats but his greatness is exaggerated a bit. Plus after wilt was beat down and broken up,he play PROFESSIONAL VOLLEYBALL. Mf played another sport after he retired and his knees were fucked. He ran track in college. This man was a BEAST. The only thing that I will say is wilt wasn’t aggressive. He was afraid he would hurt people. Back to how great wilt is. He averaged MORE MINUTES IN A GAME THAN THERE IS MINUTES IN A GAME. He never sat out ONCE in two seasons(pretty sure but he did one season) His domance was through the roof. Y’all can shit on me all you want but you can’t debate mj or Lebron. You guys can debate wilt or Lebron.
@tanganot27135 жыл бұрын
I actually tried to do the game score based on recorded stats. Since a lot of the stats were not available I made some adjustments. Like all 25 rebounds counting as DREB. His stats were 100 points 36/63 FGA/FGM 28/42 FTA/FTM 25 TREB, 2 AST and 2 PF. Steals and blocks were not tracked back then. I can’t believe that he did not have a few of them. With all known variables plugged into the formula I came up with a game score of 80.

The average pace in 1990 is not that far away from todays pace. It was slowing down from the absurd pace of the mid 80's but the peak of the slow / deadball era is the late 90's early 00's.

The averages for his top 5 are 79 pts and 27.2 rbds on over 60% FG. If they counted blocks they'd have probably been around 10 bpg. Old Wilt matched up well against Artis Gilmore and Kareem, both of whom played well in the 80s including against Olajuwan. Prime Wilt in the 80s-90s? Who knows? Kareem had 40 against Ewing in 86.

In the 2 season stretch between 1987-89, MJ played 163 games with 13 of them being top 100 games (roughly 8%). This means that during this span if you had a match against MJ there was a good chance he would drop one of the greatest games of all time on your head.
