My take on this as a korean is because Kpop is a business and as a music business you need to understand the music trends to maximize profit. "Wow my favorite idol also fws Ken Carson? She's literally me fr!" No bro she's a figurehead for the companies to milk money off of you within a parasocial relationship. I think there's tons of interesting korean artists like Mid Air Thief, Yaeji, Busker Busker, Beenzino, etc. But big Kpop groups are usually just pawns to a business. That's why the idols are so restricted too. When you are an idol, you are a product for the company. That's my theory at least.

i think we reached a point in general in music where genres, artists etc... intertwine so much from everywhere in the world that we're slowly starting to break language/cultural barriers so it's very cool to see that. Especially Rap being as big as it is today it declined into many sub-genres, i can hear the hip-hop influence in so many pop songs or artists from widely different genres these days all across the world. Through the beats, the rapping sometimes, the aesthetic, fashion etc...

I love your videos. This stuff is super interesting. I am a jazz musician and I absolutely love songs that take inspiration from jazz. I got into kpop a few years ago when I heard Newjeans. I decided I'd give kpop a chance because I am too open-minded not to. I started wondering how most songs I was hearing were so different, interesting, and good. I thought kpop was just cutesy girls dancing around singing silly feel good songs with little complexity. I was so wrong. kpop is likely one of the most cultured and complex of all the genres. Seeing Jazz musicians I respect like Jacob Collier and many others have helped me to truly see the beauty of kpop.

I can't wait for K-Pop to be original and stop going from genres to genres without even giving proper credits or where the genres come from. It really make them look like brats who are given a song that is meant to be viral, and we can't see their artistry. Especially since those songs aren't meant for them, they use a lot of techniques to make people think they really know how sing when they don't in this genre and also copy every single song to make a new one so people won't catch them copying. 1st Gen was obsessed with Western/Afro American Groups such as NSYNC, B2K, BACKSTREETBOYS, TLC, Destiny child and even got lawsuits for "inspiration" that turned out plagiarism with a lot of cultural appropriation. The second gen was copying the J-Pop industry and the Y2K like Britney Spears and Disney Channel. 3rd Gen was copying RNB artists like Tinashe and got away with it and also tried to be Latinos. Now, 4th Gen either want to make Amapiano or Afro mixing both or jump on tiktok music with Hyperpop, Pluggnb, Uk Garage, DNB, and House... like- I mean those are genres of music, and everyone can make music, but they don't give proper credits, pass as those who created it, and most of them are racist and materialistic.

Today K-pop sounds like plagiarism, old K-pop remains in the 3rd generation, all there is now is imitation, these songs for tiktok are fast music with beautiful pictures. I don't stay on these videos for long, they don't hook me, I don't need to listen to a copy when there are original talents like the Pink Panther. The original message of K-pop was high-level vocals with incredible charisma on stage. Now all I see is beats and a clear lack of personality. Just a correction for 5:18 -- PinkPantheress didn't actually co-produce the song, that was just a rumour fabricated by Yves' fans (Orbits) to promote the song. Pink isn't in the production credits anywhere, just to corroborate its falsity Otherwise this video's full of so much cool info and insight, draws so many cool connections between these disparate (but now intermingling) sonic realms. I guess k-pop has always been a reflection of Western pop and growing Western genres, but looking back on previous generations of groups it seems like there was a bit more of a distinct identity to the k-pop sound other than the Korean chants and lyrics. Now it's quite blatantly derivative, there's hella crossover, which is dope
