nice trick to clean the pistons! but shouldn't you use DOT4 brake fluid to clean the pistons? brake part cleanner will damage the rubber pistion seals

I've had no trouble. I've had a variety of bikes, one with over 100,000 miles, another with 60,000+. The k1600 now has 38,000 miles. All of them have the original (no rebuilds) calipers. I wish they used dust boots like automotive calipers, but then I guess you wouldn't see piston condition (unless you popped off the boots).

I just used this trick I learned from you to clean the pistons on my 2003 ST1300, I used DOT4 fluid, it worked so well. Thanks! I've had my eyes on the k1600gt for a while, I dig the inline 6 motor and the duolever suspension most, but BMW's reputaiton on reliablity and their design's DIY servicabliity concerns me. On my ST1300, unless the engine dies, I can do all the services myself and keep it running smooth. I've been reading the k1600 forum, but it seems majority of the owners relies on warranty and pay their dealer to take care of their bikes. I've ordered the k1600gt OEM service manual, I'll see what's inside.

The boot string works surprisingly well doesn't it? I'm finding that the ignition coils have a high failure rate. I replaced one when I checked the valve lash. In less than a week, a second coil failed. I purchased two coils along with the parts for the valve check so at least I had a replacement. It's close to three months since the valve check and I now have a third coil DTC with intermittent misfire. I thought about purchasing all six coils when I ordered the parts for the valve lash check but at almost $200 each, my wallet couldn't handle it. I am saving up to purchase the remaining four. I have a service manual and am disappointed. It has no wiring schematics and no diagnostic tests.

holy jesus, $200 each? bmw takes greedy to the next level, shouldn't they be $100 for all, and last for ever? unbelievable

on the Honda St1300 the ignition coil is located outside the engine, mounted by the frame, I havn't heard of single case of that coil fail, maybe you can consider retrofit the coils to give it more cooling.

Just bought a 2011 GTL, are front and rear pads same part number?

those are pretty impressive. I remember the first time I rode a bike with front disc's and grabbed a handful almost ate the ground... BMW's are well engineered.

+TJ. N TJ, I did hit the ground once. I hadn't ridden a bike for a few years and had the opportunity to ride a dual purpose (street/trail) bike. I took a short hop off road and used the front brake and could not let go fast enough! I then remembered why some of the dirt bikes I rode had NO front brake. Trux.

James Truxal hahaha I can imagine. I was transitioning from dirt bikes to a road ZX6 and was a little to enthusiastic with the front brake. PS. You should seriously consider doing more "How to/walkthrough/DIY" videos. Im sure other people will enjoy your informative videos.
