Yup, there is no denying that the K-series top end flows exceptionally well from the OEM casting, but it responds even better to port and flow work so I'd bet there would be even more gains to be had with some work on a flowbench especially. The intake would definitely benefit from being located better, or with a proper heat shield and seal to the hood, and I'm also willing to bet some adjustable cam gears would make better use of the cams/ powerband right off the start. Without the gears you can't degree the cams which is leaving some on the table. Thanks for sharing this man. 👍

yup - its a hot air intake from hell really.... when the bonnet is closed you'll hit like 60c air intake temps for real in traffic - down to 30 on the motorway cruising - and up to 40 if you thrash it - it neeeeeeeeds a cold air intake - but that particular intake makes vtec sound stupid loud in the cabin so maybe thats why they did it? also if its the factory air temp sensor, that will heatsoak and lie about the intake air temps as well after it gets too warm - easy to replace with a sensor with the same curve tho :)

well, there isnt really any room normally where to put filter in a colder location without moving the battery, ep3 has quite large hole and high up in the wheel well, thats where most of "coldish" air is coming to filter, also mine has a metal shielding plate between the filter and headers, but yes its not ideal, there are of course bottom mounted filters, just dont hit deep puddles

Assuming you're still on the factory ECU, must be sure to do cam sweeps at each cam timing breakpoint. Tune each cam breakpoint fuel/timing map for optimum. Then select your cam angles for each rpm breakpoint. You'd be surprised how tuning each map fattens up the curve during cam angle transitions. Have fun. Sky's the limit if you've got the time and money (500+ whp on naturally aspirated, methanol 2.6 liter K-series race motors now).

@Christdeliverme Жыл бұрын
Probably the previous tuner backed off max cam so it's not mechanically maxed out and left some fuel in it so it wouldn't knock when it got heat soaked under load. The other thing is taking 2 degrees out having nothing changes is probably due to the ecu trying to reach it's max timing before knock
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
ecu doesn't have any knock protection. or have any knock issues. it does have iat sensor which should be used to trim fuel / Ignition. rather than leaving it rich all the time, will just get even richer as air gets hotter. the cam timing is another whole story. will cover it in next vid. All i can say, is the guy who had the work done didn't get what he paid for.

The second I saw that FAT 11.7 AFR, I knew there was a ton of power to be had. Did you keep it at 12.5 AFR to be "safe", or do these NA K24's run better on the richer side? should have left vtec engagement at 5000 ish, and just letf the timing alone imo.. keep the air filter clean, the actual engine bay will have more moving air and potentially take advantage of those couple of degrees, without any risk of knock like you had in your dyno testing cell/environment.
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
Unsure if serious, but clearly a dip with vtec set that low. which is an exhaust side issue. will suck more hot air with bonnet shut and removing the air filer didnt do anything (tested off camera) was no knock, but also no point running more timing than it needs
@fry.master
@fry.master Жыл бұрын
@@Garage4age man I literally just typed out a very lengthy response and youtube automatically refreshed on my ass... lost it all. I was serious, and while I concede you have looked at the data concerning the vtec crossover engagement at "optimum" advance, you didn't realize that you need to tweak the timing during crossover on top of the crossover point itself. You can make that 5000rpm point there be the perfectly flat spot of torque you see at 6000, it just involves running less intake cam advance during the crossover, as well as properly adjusted fuel/timing trims (preventing unsettled combustion events from pulling power during the crossover itself) When it comes to your comments on air temps, I fully dispute them... you will have a lower density altitude in a moving car's engine bay outdoors than in your dyno cell with the hood up and a dinky fan blowing shop air at the block. During these times in real world applications, that extra 2 degrees of timing (so long as it actually doesn't trigger ANY knock tables at all, and was only removed for your opinionated "safety"), will help your customer reliably see/feel the gains they paid for when they drive the damn thing on the street in real life... *EDIT*:ADMITTEDLY: this involves keeping the air filter clean, engine bay clean, proper undertray/aero/underhood ventilation control.. basically the setup needs to be right, and this setup needs to be maintained more often when you take this razor edge approach to tuning. Not every customer is going to want to do that either, some guys go to protuners and not service their shit. In which case, if this was one of those guys, I agree pull that 2 degrees and if the power mostly stays, nice!
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
@@fry.master yeah with the right intake setup i agree. but in this case the inlet of the filter pipe sits beside the exhaust manifold and behind the radiator. so would expect iat's to rise or at least be the same as on dyno. The cam timing was a tooth out on the vtc gear, hence the poor results and it being maxed out (advanced) everywhere to get best power. in the process of fixing this then will retune. it was basically running 10deg cam advance, since a tooth out is roughly 15deg. Pretty sure the vtec switch point can be lowered a lot with the right headers and exhaust and make a stack more midrange. its just the same as with a fixed big cam engine. most people take the hit in the lower part of the power band and blame the cams. but with the right setup doesnt have to be like that. vtec kinda cheating in a away. can get away with sins of bad setup by just turning vtec on later. and yep youtube will do that to ya, haha
@fry.master
@fry.master Жыл бұрын
@@Garage4age As far as I knew. a tooth out on vtc will most definitely cause serious issues on k series motors, and therefore I find it's impressive you were able to make any gains as is. Serious lemonade from a lemon, man. Im glad there ended up being a bit more to unpack there, subbed and hope you get all the algorithm love ofc.
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
@@fry.master Yep, knew something wasn't right when it was gaining up top, adding what little advance it had left. should be pulling the timing back right up top. I'm new to k series, but have done a lot of cam timing stuff. Not expecting to gain much if any top end from fixing it, but should be a decent amount of midrange to pick up. basically i want to get everything working properly and the most power out of whats on the car, before i change anything else. Then i can see if the changes do anything.

@@Garage4age Thanks. Im running close to 30 so it might be a bit much. Not certain that K24 is the same as K20 due to longer stroke however. There is also some potential in optimizing cam timing on the lower engine speeds without vtech and how the cam timing at low engine speeds meets the cam timing at high speeds with vtech. The way to do it seems to be to set vtech activation to a higher than optimal engine speed and tune low engine speeds, then set vtech activation to a low engine speed and tune high engine speeds. Then find out the optimal switch point and start to phase the cam to the desired position a few hundred rpm before the vtech activation point. There is definitively some fine tuning in this. There are a lot of information that the Honda engine respond very well to large exhaust systems (3") and very large induction systems (3.5") but i havent been able to verify this on the K20 engine model. For a built K24 with cams i think there is some truth to that but not on a almost standard K20 och a non built K24

All that extra fuel it was running was probably to compensate for the HOT air intake it’s got…. It needs one routed outside the engine bay

What is wrong with the torque numbers? why is showing twice the amount of what it should? Instead of 450Nm should be more like 225Nm...
@Garage4age

its torque at the wheels

@@Garage4age Ok I see what you mean but why give us that number and not the one corrected from the RPM of the engine?
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
@@krnt13 My dyno doesn't do that calculation. every load based dyno uses the numbers you see in my graphs in the background, along with roller/hub speed to calculate the power. then either rpm pickup or some manually entered numbers and the power numbers to give torque numbers. which is really torque at the engine minus the driveline loss. not wheel torque or engine torque. so is kinda a irrelevant scaling to keep the masses happy anyway. Anyway you can do the math from the rpm at top of graph if want to know those numbers. if we pick 5900 rpm which is 150kw = 243 nm . guess some driveline loss and would be 260-270nm at engine

frankly, the only power difference was in the fuel load, come race day, I would go with the base tune, maybe a fraction rich, but that extra fuel is cooling cyl head parts, which will help after 5 laps

I'm curious as to why you didn't check the VTC angles too? ... It's a time consuming process for sure, however there are great gains to be had in the mid-range and part throttle with setting the VTC correctly too. Most "professional" tunes I've seen so far appear to be "cookie cutter" type basemaps with minimal actual tuning.
@Garage4age
@Garage4age Жыл бұрын
? its the first thing i did in the video, after the baseline runs. Was where i was expecting to make all the gains, after looking at the tune. Tune looked as you say, base map, make sure it runs ok (which it did) and send it out the door. progress stopped on the vtc tuning because ecu is reporting no more than 28deg vtc, so must be pinned or something. its not even to the point of needing to pull the advance back in the top end. it makes best power maxed out to 28deg everywhere

Really impressive how you got 10 more whp just with the proper tune, also that torque curve is so damn flat! You love to see it! You still get that lovely top end power and sound without it dragging it's legs at lower rpm.
