I can’t understand why people even resist super steels. For anyone who actually does some work everyday with a knife to be against a better edge and tougher steel overall is insane. When I had my first pocket knife it could dull by just staring at it too hard. Then fast forward to a M4 pm2. The thing was a laser for half a year if not more! After some serious use. A small investment in diamond stones covers all your bases and allows you to have access to all the best equipment. Great video E you proved your point as always 😂❤

Your Rex-45 Native 5 had the blade slimmed down. You said you and the guy that reprofiled the blade agree that Rex-45 can go down super slim and maintain a stable edge. I know a lot of folks consider K390 and Rex-45 to be in pretty similar territory. Would you say the same thing about K390 - that you can take it down really slim and it will maintain a really stable edge (presumably with a good heat treat like we see here)?

OHHHHHHHHH that's painful! It's worse than the proverbial fingernails on the chalk board! Next time give an earplug warning! 🤣😂🤣 A good course stone like you have is the key to taking care of serious problems in a reasonable amount of time. Nice work on bringing it back.......after you killed it! I couldn't find the right emoji to insert here, I guess it is too far off from being politically correct! 😁 A 0 grind convex can be thinned out on a diamond stone. Once you get the hang of it you can slightly roll the knife to maintain the convex. Bark Rivers come with an obtuse edge angle. A lower angle while maintaining the convex seriously improves the knife. When I worked on a farm I tested many different steels. It was a very rough environment which made the differences show up quick. For 1095 I would have to carry a sharpener with me because it would need to be touched up 3 to 4 times a day (lots of rope and burlap). Most good steels today will go a whole day with no problem. A quick nightly stropping takes care of it. So as far as the field sharpening goes, I'll take the knife that doesn't need it! Have a great Thanksgiving!

It would be fun to see how you'd fair using one of those no named, two tone, supposedly dual grit (they always feel the same to me) sharpening stones you find cheap at an army surplus store. My grandfather had one that was bowled out like a canoe it was so soft, and he was only sharpening 56-58 hrc knives on it. I suspect the myth of super steels being hard to sharpen comes from folks using stones that aren't much harder than playdoh.

@ericasedc even if it's just for a laugh, I think a video comparing the 'old timer' sharpening tools to the modern stuff would be very interesting. Every now and then I come across the miniature dual grit 'oil stone' I got in the boy scouts 25 years ago and wonder how it would work on my new magnacut knife haha. For edge reprofiling or to repair major damage on the cutting edge, diamond is the best option, regardless of whether it is a simple carbon steel or a super steel. I now use Atoma diamond plates (140, 400, 600 and 1200 grit), and in my experience they have the best results. I also have Naniwa Diamond Pro stones, these are resin bonded diamond stones, also good, but I find the Atoma better (performance and feel). For resharpening I like to use the Shapton Pro Ceramic Stones, especially the 1000 grit is absolutely great, good performance but above all the best grinding feel of all the stones I have ever used. For stropping I can recommend Stroppy Stuff diamond compounds, it is really good.
