I live in Maryland. We in the suburbs/rural areas of the State just roll our eyes at the hot mess that is Baltimore, and "Thank God we don't live there! Three mayors IN A ROW resigned and were prosecuted for corruption. The second one ran again for mayor a while later (fortunately did not win). New mayor Brandon Scott, pretty young guy, has a monumental task ahead of him. About Washington: I couldn't tell you exactly who is being convicted for what, but the fact that that is where the federal government is HQ'd tells you all you need to know LOL. Many of the founding fathers of the US were classically educated so they ended up designing a political system not unlike republican Rome. And it resembles its ancient counterpart in almost every way! In Maryland we had a governor in the late 60s named Spiro Agnew. He resigned as governor when he was elected Vice-President of the United States (with Nixon as president). Spiro resigned the year before Nixon did because all the shady shit he did when he was governor, and back when he was the county executive of Baltimore County, came to light. He eventually plead not guilty (but "No contest") to federal corruption charges. A British political scientist said at the time that the world was shocked when Agnew had to resign, because the amounts of the actual bribes were so small, that "It would not have bought a Junior Minister in the third world". Kind of like a wealthy person shoplifting. I mean, come on, if you're going to take bribes you might as well take large ones, lol.

Cloud Gate, aka “The Bean”, is one of Chicago’s most popular sights. The monumental work of art anchors downtown Millennium Park and reflects the city’s famous skyline and the surrounding green space. Here’s everything you need to know about The Bean, including where it came from and where to see it. What is The Bean? The Bean is a work of public art in the heart of Chicago. The sculpture, which is officially titled Cloud Gate, is one of the world’s largest permanent outdoor art installations. The monumental work was unveiled in 2004 and quickly became of the Chicago’s most iconic sights.

I’m truly shocked that Providence, Rhode Island is not on the list. In the 80s, Dateline dubbed RI “the most corrupt state in the union since before there was a union.” Corruption in RI is a venerable institution since the 1690s. In the 1960s and 70s, it was the arbitration house for mob disputes. In the 80s the Mayor’s secretary left early on Friday’s so he could use her desk to count and divide the week’s cash bribes. In the 90s he was charged with 94 RICO counts. The list goes on ….
@JPMadden2 жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised. Providence is too small to have a high number of convictions that this list seems to be based on. The corruption here in Rhode Island seems to have lessened, in part because the Mafia is not so powerful. We're probably not the only place that believes we are the most corrupt.

Rhode Island? Shit. I guess corruption *does* exist in places you wouldn’t expect.
@JPMadden2 жыл бұрын
@@kelseydonoghue158 The original comment of this thread talked about how bad it was in the late 20th century. The ex-con (and future convict) mayor of Providence, Buddy Cianci, became a sort of charming anti-hero local and national celebrity in the 1990s and 2000s. The Mafia of course still exists here, especially since we are the most Italian state, but they seem to have lost much of their influence. A distant cousin who I haven't seen in decades became locally famous and infamous for helping them. Many Rhode Islanders seem to take a perverse pleasure in how corrupt our state is, almost as if there are bragging rights involved. In the '90s, a guy I worked with played in a local bar band called "State of Corruption." As far as I know, the corruption is similar to bigger urban places known for it, like Chicago, NYC, New Jersey, etc. Most of what people think of corruption is not the illegal stuff, but the "I know a guy" type, where a local government office seems to work quickly for a few and more slowly for everyone else. During the colonial era, there was so much smuggling in Rhode Island that the British nicknamed it "Rogues' Island." The 1772 burning of the customs schooner HMS Gaspee was perhaps the first overt violent act leading to the Revolution. It is little known outside the state. There is a relatively short Wikipedia page about it titled "Gaspee Affair."
