Hi! Japanese student here, I'm new to the fandom so I'm possibly stating something really obvious to everyone, but I love how the fact that Hinata and Kageyama complete and compliment each other is highlighted by their names! Hinata in japanese is 日向 where 日 means sun and 向 means "to face", forming an actual japanese word that's used to describe sunny places. The show does not focus solely on them being opposite, but on them completing each other and that shows in the choice of naming Kageyama AND Tsukishima. What's the opposite of Sun? Moon of course: Tsukishima (月島, 月 being MOON and 島 meaning island) is Hinata's other side of the coin. Kageyama's name, instead, is formed with the words 影 kage and 山 yama, where 影 means SHADOW (and 山 means mountain, but in japanese surnames it's a pretty common radical). So we have, the sun and the moon, and then the shadow. Thus not only matching their roles in the show, but also matching their character design (brightness for Hinata, lightness for Tsukishima, darkness for Kageyama). [btw, almost all of the characters names have meaning, either in the kanji choices, or in the way they're spelled. I encourage everyone to check them out, my favorite is 烏養 (ukai) because it literally means "crows nurturer" or "to foster/bring up crow(s)"]

SPOILERS!! The whole idea of seeing one without the other feeling strange, or just wrong in general, definitely comes to play when Kageyama goes to the camp and Hinata doesn’t. He almost looks lost, and aimless. It’s the first time he’s played without Hinata in a long time, and he feels lost. When he doesn’t have someone it he’ll at, his fiery personality goes to waste, and he is left sitting quietly. Likewise, Hinata feels lost as well, leading him to show up where he does in the end Just my perspective!

god…this feels like the Exact video i’ve been waiting for, you sum up so well what i love about haikyuu and hinata & kageyama’s relationship!! i like how you pointed out how well furudate writes opposites like every relationship could probably get its own video dedicated to it hgdfghj 0:50 somehow you’ve read my mind and captured exactly how i felt watching haikyuu for the first time & seeing them actually stand next to each other?? like i legit remember feeling RELIEVED at how good the character design is cause i was like ‘oh thank god the two main characters look like they fit together. i’m in good hands.’ like. the power that has. (a similar thing happened to me w their uniforms? we got like a glimpse of it in ep2 or smth and i was So Enamoured with the design that i spent the next ten or so episodes impatient for them to be in a uniform that complemented their colour scheme…lol) i also love how hinata’s face is a bit more round and his hair is fluffier compared to kageyama’s sharper angles and flat hair. one is soft and one is spiky….it’s peak character design………… 2:43 this whole section on hinata’s flaws (and really the whole video too) makes me unbelievably happy just bc hinata’s always been one of my absolute favourite characters in haikyuu (along w kageyama and tsukki) but he was always the only one that i could never ever put into words exactly why i love him so much. this always frustrated the hell out of me bc he was my ABSOLUTE FAVE and i had NO IDEA WHY but i’m so glad i found this video bc you put it into words!!!!! thank you so much!!!!!!!! 9:05 thank you also for giving me Character Reasons™ to justify liking kageyama’s new hairstyle. lol 9:55 they actually weren’t written at the same time!! (if by this you mean ‘furudate conceived of these characters together and developed them alongside each other so they could be perfectly contrasted’. if not then. just ignore this part of the comment, i guess) this still blows my mind. so for ppl who don’t know, before haikyuu as we know it got started it had a ‘one shot’ which was essentially just its ‘pilot’, a single chapter one-off, and lots of things were different, i.e there were less characters present and tsukki was a second year, etc. but before the one shot, there was another one-off which i think is called the ‘prototype’(?) and things were SO different, with the main difference being hinata. for one, he wasn’t the protagonist (kageyama was) and his character was p much nothing like he is in haikyuu proper. he was meek, had no confidence, all around very down on himself and had a rly small presence as a person. i’m pretty sure i got whiplash from how out of character he was. it was especially weird seeing how at one point in haikyuu’s history, hinata and kageyama’s dynamic was so…off?? bc kageyama was essentially (though not entirely) the same character in the prototype, most of their time together was spent w kageyama insulting hinata and hinata just taking it & not fighting back lmao. they were less of ‘perfect opposites’ and more of ‘people who just don’t get along’ (they were even the same height in the prototype!! where’s the smol and tol contrast??) it made for a completely different tone & i’m glad furudate worked on fitting hinata’s personality to kageyama’s better, for pretty much all the reasons you pointed out in this video (hinata’s character being actually interesting, kageyama not seeming like a total asshole, and their strengths and weaknesses playing off of each other). if the dynamic between the two main characters wasn’t working we pretty much would never have gotten haikyuu as we know and love it today my god. i wrote Way more than i thought i would. i just. fucking love haikyuu and hinata & kageyama’s characters so much…if i don’t talk endlessly about them at least once a week i’m pretty sure i’ll spontaneously combust. and this video was so fucking good!! thank you sm for putting into words things i’ve never been able to & things i’ve never even thought about before!!! i’m gonna be thinking about this video until i die

The b a l a n c e is beautiful. Edit: Glad you mentioned the other characters. I especially love the concept of Bokuto and Akaashi. We always expect Akaashi to be the supporting and rational one, the one that understands Bokuto the best, as the anime has shown us the first few seasons. He looks normal on the outside, but is actually a lot "weirder" on the inside (~>New season). In the new season their dynamic changes though, we have seen that Akaashi is actually the one admiring Bokuto and that Bokuto understands Akaashi just as well. He is actually a big supporter, too, if the shit is really about to go down with Akaashi. So both rely on each other. Akaashi might help Bokuto out more in general, but Bokuto does have a lot influence and importance on Akaashi in the moments that he needs it the most.

i feel like haikyuu characters work with each other in a symbiotic sort of way !! the reason that they grow so much is because they learn from each other ! at first i felt like they were super cliché archetypes, and they sort of are, but they all compliment each other perfectly to create an amazingly balanced show. i could rant forever about how well written these characters are, starting with onomastics (their names tell us so much about who they are and are often used to emphasize the whole polar opposite aspect) and i want to thank you for such an interesting video :)))

Uh... I fell in 'love' with Kageyama when he asked Hinata: What were you doing for those three years? Kageyama is a perfectionist, that demands a lot from himself and from others - for him there are no half-ways. He is angry because Hinata has so much potential and he does not develop it . For Kageyama playing volleyball for fun is unimaginable - for him it's serious business but that's another trait of perfectionists. Kageyama goes deep into VB and thinks that if the game is to be right and won it's better he does all the things himself to ensure quality - control aspect - another trait of perfectionist. The thing is he doesn't consider himself a prodigy as everyone else does. He just focuses on a job done. When he feels he lacks something - he goes and practises relentlessly, till he gets it. When he meets people better than him he jumps to learn from them immediately. Kageyama is a reverse of enthusiasm that Hinata has - he represents hard work, focus and goal-oriented thinking that Hinata lacks. Hinata is socially great, while Kageyama struggles with communication with others since he is often, in his perception of volleyball, much higher than other players. Hinata needs to learn to treat vb seriously if he wants to play it and improve his shortcomings, Kageyama needs to loosen up and somethies just play for fun. That is why they complement each other so well but I still find Hinata annoying at times and I wouldn't mind a show with Kageyama only.
@elliesart_ Жыл бұрын
Loved this!!! Really agreed with all the points and you put everything together succinctly. One thing I love about Haikyuu is it has all the excitement and large, diverse cast and environment of a shonen anime, with characters constantly reaching new heights... but it also has this relationship at its center - undeniably, this show wouldn't exist without hinata AND kageyama AND their relationship. I love BL anime, but understand how it's a completely different trope and vibe, appealing to a set audience - but Haikyuu was similar to Yuri on Ice in that both concentrate on the sport they're about, the beauty in it and passion of the main characters and excitement and determination in practicing and winning... but also revolve around a dynamic between two main characters. One (yuri) just happens to be a romantic dynamic. One thing I find lacking in a lot of great shonen anime is this central relationship. It really, really doesn't need to be romantic. It just needs to be 'soulmate'-like. Animes like Chainsaw Man, JJK, Mob psycho, or even to an extent BSD (although there is a common ship and canon soulmate relationship in that, with Dazai and Chuuya) will never for me reach that satisfying level where I can exclaim 'this is my favourite thing!!' or that it'll be in my thoughts for years to come, because without that central dynamic where two characters bounce off each other, push each other, and complement each other even as rivals is for me just not as good

Furudate sensei sometimes adds some metaphorical situations that are hard to catch ( some small details as well) Like for ex when Hinata gets to the back and Tsukki gets to the front, or when they're subbed, it's like night and day. Yall get my drift? Yeah their roles have got to do something with it, but the position they take in the vanguard/rear guard gives it more sense. Also bc tsukki=moon, hin=sun. In the covers, them running was the sign of their friendly rivalry and the one who's ahead changes at times. There was also this one time Noya took one of Asahis knee pad and used it for his elbows, but it wasn't rly obvious since we were all too busy watching the match lol. Lev in s2 also had this beetle that was stuck to his shirt?? The fandom doesn't know if Lev hasn't noticed it, or maybe it's just his pet lmao [SPOILERS FOR FINAL ARC IN THE MANGA] Notice how Hinata is number 10 in his highschool days, and Kageyama is 9. Now that they're adults, Hinata is number 21, and Kageyama is 20. Kageyama continues to be 1 number ahead, and Hinatas number is just after his. It could mean, or truly means a lot of things.

Haikyuu was my second ever anime that I actually watched, and I know it sounds maybe cringy, but it really did chang me life. It gave me so much more perspective, emotional feelings, and really opened up my addiction to anime lol. But seriously, I've always had trouble paying attention to something really long, like a tv show or even tv show season. It was different with Haikyuu though. It cultivated me with every single episode, and heck, even scenes. It always left me wanting more. But when I finished its by then latest season, I kept wanting to feel that feeling Haikyuu gives me. I tried it with some other shows, but it was with little success. I turned to the manga but also finished that too. I cannot express how beautifully and astounding every single little aspect of Haikyuu is written. I'm usually kinda bad with explaining what I feel, but I tried with this paragraph. I still have too much to say about this, idk if this is weird to say or even if its my place to suggest, masterpiece. It is my favorite anime or heck, storyline, and I know for a fact it will always will be for me personally. (on a side note: I'm a huge hinata simp and kagehina shipper. He is my favorite character ever, and I again know for a fact, always will be. I completely adore him and find his character one of the best thought through and game-changing in the show. Irrelevant: I legit cry every episode of Haikyuu and squeal whenever I see hinata. I know I have a problem, but I cant help it lol) Amazing analysis and wonderful video btw!!! Though they're not polar opposites, I think this is also why Iwazumi and Oikawa's dynamic is so fucking on point. Their traits balance each other out and they make an amazing duo, just like KageHina

For the numbers of foreshadowing that we just now realized from the current chapters, i shouldn't be surprised... But THIS. THIS THOUGH... It's like it has been planned before a single manga panel is drawn

This is such a great analysis video!! I love their relationship a lot and you’re so right- the show would not work as well if it stared anyone else. As much as I love Noya... anyway, great points and amazing jokes too 😂

Slice of life is strongest when it has strong personalities and dynamics. I think what I've always enjoyed the contrast of personalities in Haikyuu pairs. Opposite enough to compliment eachother! What I loved this latest season has been Kageyama and Hinata developing without eachother. Especially Kageyama meeting all the new characters and falling back into old habits, but now excited for them work together again!

MelonTree, your One Piece videos have been absolute bangers and while reading HQ, I enjoyed/loved it so much that I considered the thought of thinking about having the series topple One Piece as my fav series of all time. My point is that, HQ is my second fav series of all time, it's basically nakama on the volleyball court instead of the All Blue (I see you Sanji 😢). I.e. do you think you can make more videos analyzing HQ and even going beyond the anime and covering the manga because the manga panels capture so many expressions and rally sequences that the anime can't replicate. Please and thank you.

Maybe a bit unrelated to this specific video, however i want to say that your videos, wether they be an analysis or not, are very gripping. I‘ve started watching devilman crybaby and haikyu because of your analysis videos and i‘m looking forward to more content of yours. This video and all others are very enjoyable and your sense of humour and intellect are really entertaining and eye-opening. I hope you have a nice day 💕

This anime so good that my mum, who usually doesn't like Shounen anime, loved this one. Hell she got so sad when Karasuno lost against Seijoh and when I mentioned to her in the manga, Kageyama and Hinata fight against each other once they're older, she got upset that they were split up. My mum a closet Kagehina stan?? 😂

While I agree with majority of this video, I feel like a lot of people (mostly shippers) like to act as those all of Kageyama's development as a character is due to Hinata and that is simply not the case while it is undeniable that they have a genuine bond and are written around each other people like to ignore that Karasuno as a whole made Kageyama into the person that he is. The scene with him saying "I never want to apologise for a spike again" was not solely for Hinata it was for all members of the team, it was Kageyama realising that he had a role to fill in order to support his team and be the best setter that he can be for them, this is also reflected when he said (SPOILERS!!!!) 'I wanted to go further with this team' to his teammates after they lost at nationals. It is further reflected in recent manga chapters when we get a look into Kageyama's past, Hinata isn't the sole reason for Kageyama's growth and I feel like that's something ignore by fans who purely want to ship them and call them their uwu babys but that's a whole other discussion. Other than that, this was a nice video
@MelonTeee4 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with you on the team as a whole helping Kageyama become who he is, but I really disagree with the "I won't apologise for a set again" being for the team as a whole. The reasons being, before that, he specifically apologised to Hinata for that, and Hinata got angry at him for it. Like I said in the video we also got a point of view shot of Kageyama staring at Hinata (hence the shot being upside down) as if he's thinking of what to say to Hinata. Then Hinata says "I just want to win!" which in turn is followed by Kageyama saying he won't apologise again, there's no coincidence he said that right after Hinata voiced his own determination. Not to mention Hinata was the only one in the gym with Kageyama at the time and while you 'could' take it as Kageyama saying it for the team as a whole, the fact he specifically apologised to Hinata after the losing set kinda says it all. The moment in the gym was a moment between the 'freak duo' only, which is why they were alone together while voicing their thoughts and concerns until the team showed up. It's supposed to contrast their first time in the gym together in the second episode of season 1, where Kageyama completely looked down on Hinata and mocked him. But now they respect each other, so we get to see their interactions anew.

MelonThot Definitely there’s no doubt that he was replying to Hinata but to say that his motivations and words are solely for Hinata is simply not true, I mean do you think when Hinata said I want to win that he meant I want to win for you? No, of course not because they are thinking for themselves and as part of a team, Kageyama is speaking to Hinata and to himself as a reminder to be the best setter he can be, not just for Hinata but for Karasuno as a whole, while Kageyama understands his role in their weirdo combo he’s constantly thinking about his role as a support to his whole team which is why he was so in awe of how Oikawa was able to bring out the full potential of all of his teammates (not just iwaizumi for example) I am not disputing that they had a moment and that their bond didn’t grow but I feel like people are too quick to act like they only exist for each other and not as members of a team, and I feel the reason for this is because of shipping which I don’t think is a bad thing but isn’t a completely positive thing but hey that’s just my sixpence

This video got me thinking a lot about Dowism, an ancient Chinese Religion, which is where Yin and Yang came from. The thing about Yin and Yang isn’t just supposed to be a representation of balance and opposites. The white circle inside of the black half and the black circle in the white half represents that some things can appear completely opposite but still be very similar. That’s basically Hinata and Kageyama, they appear opposites but are very similar. A few examples being they are both Male, around the same age, come from the same country and play the same sport for the same high school.
