Kageyama had so much development in terms of personality. From a dictator, Kags indeed followed Oikawa's advice and asked everyone abt their preferred tosses. He asks "Do you want it higher?" Or "Sorry, that was too low, right?" but this ended up clouding his own game sense. Kageyama ended up being called a "goody two shoes" because he kept sucking up to spikers. Yes, it's important to give the spikers the set they want but Kageyama is of high calibre skill. He has so much talent and experience in volleyball and as a setter, he should be the one calling the shots. So from being a puppy who listens to each word the spiker says, he matured. The most notable set he made that truly showed his determination is when he set to Tsukishima. Before, Kageyama sets an eerily perfect toss for a quick. Then he learns that Tsukishima prefers tosses that gives him more options. But now, Kageyama gives Tsukishima HIGH ASS sets because HE knows TSUKI can REACH A VERY HIGH HEIGHT to go over the blockers and STILL have options (this extra work annoys tsuki tho). Another example of his maturity is when he admitted there is nothing else he could do once he made the set, that the mid air fight is in the hands of the spiker, not him. He showed full trust in his team. His middle school days are completely forgotten. He is a badass now. Hinata on the other hand grew in volleyball. His game sense is not as sharp as others (like Kenma, Suga), but he thinks like he is indeed a player worthy of fighting in Nationals. He is still a "monster" but with sentience, with intellect. He has always been strong physically but when he achieved the combined skill of instincts and strategy, he was able to execute more plays successfully. His presence in the court is truly the brightest. KageHina is usually written like they're the best of friends with competitive natures. But they are more like enemies to lovers. Until the end, they remember their bet: the one who stands on court longer wins. Indeed one of them won.

A theory that I have is that Kageyama actually does know that he's the one being selfish but he knows that Hinata is eventually going to surpass him. Kageyama's scared that Hinata'll leave him behind once he doesn't need him anymore, and it'll end there. Kageyama wants to keep Hinata the way he already is because without him, people would eventually not care and his days as 'king' would be long gone. I don't think Kageyama would be _so_ selfish that he'd intentionally do that without reason (then again, he was taught by Oikawa, so...the chance is low, but never zero) just to profit off Hinata. What I'm hoping is that Kageyama just wants to feel accepted and not have to hold back, which is what he wants with Hinata, and that he just wants to stay by his side. That would explain and clear up a lot of confusion that we have, and the KageHina shippers would be happy, so I think it would be a very satisfying answer to the question we all still have Edit: I just realized how long this is sorry...

But wait, he said he doesn't like being called "King"; do you mean the other kind of "King" ? Like the "King of the Court" or smth like that ? An unavoidable asset to the team ? Because Hinata, has his closest teammate, legitimizes all the things that "Kags" always did with his old teammates, who absolutely hated and tried to take away from him, by, between other things, removing him from the field for not changing his ways of leading his team ? So Hinata, by keeping up, but also PREFERRING Kags' speed & intensity, which is on par with his, MAKES HIM exactly that "most important man on the field", in other words a "King", so to speak, the dream that he always yearned for ? And he thinks that no-one else than him would ever be so tolerant and willing of this pressuring personality of his, because, like, maybe because the proportion of "Onion Head guy"-to-Hinata players that he's met in his life, in terms of tolerance, is incredibly astronomical ?

@@nicholasleclerc1583 These are all really good questions! I wrote this a while ago so I'm not entirely sure what was going through my head at the moment but what I think I meant when I said "Kageyama's days as 'king' would be over" is that he doesn't necessarily like being called king (but we all know that, of course) but he would be devastated if that light that's shown on him would disappear because it switched to shine on Hinata. He would rather stand in that light together if that meant keeping Hinata where he is now and not letting him grow as a player. We all know that they'll eventually graduate and live their lives as now young adults, but I feel like Kageyama would always have that regret sitting inside of him if he didn't tell Hinata how he wants to grow _together_ directly because it would totally mean so much more if it came from Kageyama's mouth. Going back to the re-crowning scene from season four, (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about) I feel like this was Hinata's way of saying "There's nothing wrong with wanting me to stay by your side. I accept that. That's why you're the king." I hope this answers your questions a bit!

this is late but its just a personal opinion of mine, a lot of people say that they had that fight and bicker a lot because they hate each other. They bicker because of their competitiveness and also because they see each other as rivals (and best friends/partners too) and the reason they werent scared to have a big fight with each other like the one in season 2 is because they know that how big the fight is or what theyre fighting about, they'll always make up again. I hate it when people say that theyre a toxic pair when theyre extremely close and accept each other the way they are. This paragraph was extremely unnecessary but i just felt the need to say this

I don’t think it’s a who is “‘more important” I believe the both of them are equally important, but on different levels. It Kageyama never appeared, Hinata wouldn’t be able to unlock his potential because no one saw that he had any, not even himself. Kageyama brings that out by first being a rival, and then being a teammate, and the TWO playing together showed Karasuno that Hinata isn’t as useless as they all thought him to be. That there’s more than meets the eye, and I believe that’s because, as you said in the video, Hinata was able to keep up with Kageyama, who was considered a prodigy and never knew what slow down and match others pace is. Hinata, on the other hand, constantly gives Kageyama slaps on the face, reality checks if you may say. He isn’t important to him because of volleyball, but as a person. Hinata is constantly helping Kageyama develop forward, not technically, but as a friend and teammate. And to be honest, I think this terrifies Kageyama, but this is a whole other discussion lmao So yeah, that’s what I think. I haven’t watched Haikyuu in a while, but maybe I should (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

Thank you for this comment! The thing about Hinata thinking not even he had the potential is something I don't think is true because Hinata is so damn persistent at volleyball he would've definitely been able to learn the basics; even training with Bokuto alone after a night taught him how to do a faint. Although, without Kageyama, he's not the "monster duo" decoy, but with another great setter (as I said in the video, Oikawa) he would've still become an amazing player. Kageyama's problem is he had so much potential no one actually knew what to do with it without telling him to like...be worse lol. However I do definitely agree Hinata also helps Kageyama on a mental and emotional level just because of the person he is, which is truly a whole other discussion lol. I feel like I should've said in the video that instead of bringing out 100% of Hinata's potential, like Oikawa would be able to do, Kageyama brings out 1000% of Hinata's potential which is only something HE can do eheh.

the karasuno third years were at that game with hinata and kageyama, they knew about both of them. Daichi made a point to make them work together because he knew they would make a powerful combo, he just didn't know how powerful. Then Suga, Tanaka, and kageyama also took their free time to help hinata with the basics, they knew about Hinatas potential and they worked to help refine his skills.

Youre calling my inner OH-MY-GOSH-No-One-Dare-Harm-My-Man persona w this analysis ish video. As someone that usually prefer second leads than the protagonist, I whole heartedly agree- I LOVE HINATA. Being the 'cheerful but lesser guy' in a rivalry is such an overused troupe but Furudate made his/her protag a likable and somewhat endearing kind. Honestly at first I wasnt paying much attention to him- I was interested to know more about Noya, Kuroo, etc but Hinata's personality, wholesome drive to improve and grow to a much better version of himself all of a sudden hits me so hard- AND THEN HERE COMES THE MOST HEART HITTING MOMENT- when that whole Ball Boy arc happen... my gosh it was so heartbreaking I literally cried but Hinata improved so MUCH just by observing others play... He found a way to improve by himself. He's so amazing I swear! Plus the fact that both Hinata and Kageyama joined a training camp but Kageyama came back w a lowkey bigger ego and a shaken resolve cos funny enough Atsumu passively made fun of him. When Kageyama aggresively lashed out his frustration to Asahi and Noya, without Hinata speaking up that time I cant imagine Karasuno moving passed that incident smoothly even tho technically Kageyama was right. Hinata can take the cold hard truths and shrug the unecessary details, Kageyama speaks his minds most of the time. Hinata is what Kageyama need, AND MORE. They are more than a freak duo, I cant even describe enough how they compliment each other so well.

I couldn’t agree with this more. Hinata needed to learn more about hard skills through Kageyama and Kageyama needs to learn about soft skills through Hinata. Honestly at the beginning, I fell in love with Hinata at the end of the first episode when he kept on going for another ball despite clearly losing. I love how he has the innate talent for volleyball from the beginning, but because his foundations were weak (and lowkey because he’s a boke) he was not able to utilize it well. Whenever I go back to rewatch the first episode, I always get the chills when Kageyama shouted at his teammates and faced Hinata’s team head on. From the beginning, he respected Hinata’s potential. The first time they finished they quick OMG that would be one of my most favorite scenes of all time. It feels very natural and hits you right in the feels. Kags has a very strong personality and that causes a divide between him and other people. At the lowest point when he’s starting to believe he’s not gonna meet anyone that can spike his toss, he meets Hinata. It’s not something as simple as having an experienced spiker hit the toss flawlessly. Hinata has to work hard for it. And he never showed signs of stopping. I think that’s what moved Kageyama even more. He finally found someone who’s as obsessed at volleyball as him. Someone who’s as obsessed with winning and would not stop to keep growing (if not more obsessed). It also gave me chills. Honestly I can go on and on about everything that I love about the friendship between them two and how there’s so much platonic chemistry going on between them (I also wish they were hots for each other, but let’s face it... the closest they’re gonna get is at bromance).

I I agree with these shipper comments, but gosh it makes me sad too because this video goes so much deeper than that. This video didn’t really mention their potential romantic involvement with each other, but their relationship as players. Their dynamic on the court. And gosh am I happy to see someone else who realized how it is Kageyama that need Hinata (in volleyball), and not necessarily the other way around. I’m half way through season 2, Karasuno is about to face Aoba Johsai again, and man am I looking forward to Kageyama’s development as a player and person from here.

The moment anyone tries to make an argument as to one being more important then the other I have to disagree. They literally can not compete at their fullest potential without each other. Can they do well? Yes. Can they do their best? No. Because they were written to work together, not against each other. Neither of them are useless without the other and it would have taken them both much longer to succeed if they had had to do it alone. Kageyama would likely not gotten to play as much due to his attitude taking longer to change because he had no one to give him a reason to believe he could do his best (play at his highest capability) with his teammates. He likely might have not even played at all after a few games since the seniors would have worked better together without Hinata to make it so Kageyama could set without holding back. Hinata might not have played at all because most people wouldn’t have trusted a rookie to be in the main line up when he is not particularly good at anything but spiking, and I doubt they’d have taken the risk at letting him shine as a spiker without someone incredibly skilled like Kageyama to support them technically if something went wrong. Kageyama is there to make sure Hinata can shine and polish his technique as a spiker while slowly finding his ground in other areas. Hinata is there to moderate Kageyama’s already existing skill so that it can be used the most effectively and while keeping in mind that he is playing with other capable individuals. I’m a very neutral person on most things and you said you’d like to discuss their relationship so I shared my own opinion. No disrespect or any hostility whatsoever. I’ve not talked about these two with anyone and figured this was an opportunity to do so. Thanks for sharing your own opinion!

I see your perspective and agree with it to some extent, I must mention that Ive only watched the anime a couple of times but not read the manga. I only feel that one is not useless without the other as both bring out the true potential within in each other from the start. Hinata does certainly bring out the best in Kageyama as he was the only one who could hit his tosses in the beginning (amongst other things youve mentioned) even when Kageyama wasnt necessarily giving him the appropriate tosses that he wanted at the time. But Kageyama, In my opinion, brings out Hinatas potential at the moment from 70% to a 100% due to his forceful nature ( in the beggining atleast, especially when he says he doesnt want to toss to someone who he knows isnt worth it) as well as motivates him when he needs it whether hes aware of it or not(Hinata does the same for him too in a more obvious way). When Hinata learns a new technique from whomever, its only as good as what hes being taught or who tosses to him. But for some reason, whatever he has learned gets amped up to a 100% when Kageyama tosses to him throughout the seasons. I cant say Kageyama is useless without him or vice versa because they both bring out the best in each other also due to how similar they are in nature when you actually pay attention to their goals, aspects of their personality etc. They have had a synergy between them from the beginning that slowly but surely gets unlocked and deepened with the help of the both of their efforts into their relationship. It also refers back to the quote on how there isnt a sole player in volleyball and this allocates to their relationship too. If one was more important than the other then it wouldnt be called a relationship tbh and it just doesnt work, they are a team in their own dynamic in the end. At first they are definitely viewed as opposites in their manners or being, but if you really observe them then youd realize that the two of them are actually very much in sync but just blinded by different insecurities in the beginning seasons. There isnt one relationship out there where one person does more to bring out the best in the other I believe. And I strongly feel that this anime, so centered around teamwork and the importance of everyone in it, shows that in these two characters.

Thank you for such a big comment! Yeah I do think I used 'useless' a bit too freely here ahah, but the thing with Kageyama is because he was already an amazing volleyball player, he needed not just someone with the ability to be able to keep up but the persistence to stay with him. At the beginning Tsukishima even tells Hinata of Kageyama's nature, which Kageyama thinks will have Hinata hate him, to which Hinata says he doesn't care. Even Kageyama was surprised by that! I believe it's not only the abilities Hinata has but him, HIMSELF, that has made Kageyama into a player who can truly work in a team. Although not 'useless', Kageyama definitely wouldn't be as good as a player without Hinata. They definitely do work off each other though which I should've mentioned in the video!

@@MelonTeee no problem, I had thought that you wanted a detailed reply and funny enough I had just rewatched this anime for the 3rd time and just finished it today and saw ur post. I thought it was quite synchronistic lol. I dont think you used the word useless too freely because I feel as if the characters (hinata and kageyama) themselves would use that exact word, so to me it feels like you are channeling them while speaking for them. I completely agree with what you have said in reply to my comment though. I definitely feel that why Kageyama is really a perfect match (not only my words as it had been said in the anime itself) for Hinata is also because his demeanor, speech and his entirety as a person is what Hinata needs. Let's just say that he is the power behind the throne. He is the main force enabling Hinata, he just never saw that in the beginning. We already got the idea that Hinata, by nature, is more receptive and that honestly was the only thing separating him from Kageyama because he isnt as dominant as him. To me, Hinata is not trying to subdue him but instead, change him from domineering to dominant. And kageyama was literally showing Hinata that he needs to up his game to take a place alongside him, which is the motivation he can give him, also to bring forth the initiative that Hinata lacked. And tbh, I doubt Kageyama was aware that he unlocked this in him as his mere presence in his life inspired Hinata to improve as it drove him to even desire surpassing him. The term "soulmate" can honestly be used for them and it is a term that doesnt always mean it in a romantic way as we can find soulmates in friends, parents, animals etc. But I honestly feel that they are very much a powerful duo with an unstoppable synergy as teammates or even friends (whether they realize it or not). In my eyes, they look like the best of friends that have a connection that didnt even need years to develop. Like they already knew how to deal with each other for the most part. Hell, they couldnt even remember the really bad fight they had later which honestly gives rise to how well they suit each other and the best part is that none of them are aware of their similarities (which is alot) that they share. Theres not a time after in the later seasons where you dont see them together I think.

Fair points. I just want more of the anime in general. Sport and fighting in anime is a lot cooler than how it looks in manga, so here I am patiently waiting for the anime to be made, rather than get ahead reading the manga. Other than that I love the whole team turning in to cool dudes with their own cool moves and syncing with the main character, like in "Kuroko's Basketball" or whatever it was called: The main was "useless" but still kinda cool and then he became f*cking awesome! The second lead was pretty cool and remained cool, maybe he increased a bit in coolness as it went along too but, the main character rocked the whole way through! ...and the supporting cast developed steadily throughout and made the whole team cool in the end. That's my kinda show!

I know people hate Kuroko's Basketball bc it was unrealistic but tbh for me that's what made it more enjoyable. it was a really fun show to watch and Kuroko's one skill kept me on the edge of my seat because the moment his one skill didn't work, he'd be "useless" either way both these anime's are really amazing

i am very impatiently waiting for season 4. the few times you see sugawara playing he is great with all the players even hinata (though not as good with hinata), so the argument of the video is very correct. I also appreciate that hinata and kageyama are pretty equally dumb jocks. In a lot of other anime (at least the ones i've seen) kageyama would also be a academic genius and rich for some reason

This is why I really appreciate Suga as a character. Although I haven't watched the anime in a hot minute, I still vividly remember the moment when Kageyama saw how Suga was so close to all his teammates. Unlike Oikawa where Kageyama felt like there was a secret technique that caused his demise (although their meeting probably started that thought to form), Suga could show Kageyama how it really is his own fault-and if memory serves me right, Kageyama actually gets benched because of his attitude, then sees what Suga can do even though his actual skills on the court are inferior.

I think that the trailer for season 4 is giving an overview of more development in not only hinata’s character but how he acts on the court, i havent read the manga yet but i think that this will be the end of hinata’s reliance on kageyama. or at least mostly and yes i do ship kagehina but all ships aside i feel like this is the first relationship that kageyama really had with someone who understands him and can relate to him which what i think is one of the main reasons their argument really happened but they were still able to play together. just a thought tho im an idiot

Hinata by far has had the best development in the series. I finished the 4 seasons just last night and the tears I had after seeing Hinata come such a long way were unstoppable. Not only did he push himself to become better but it was in that one play that Kageyama pushed himself to barely touch the ball to pass over to Hinata that showed just how much influence our little red carried. Because Kageyama not only wasn't ready to lose to Inarizaki but also because Hinata lit that fire in Kageyama to become competitive and push himself fruther beyond his limits to match up to HInata. Especially the way Hinata was the only person who held thru with such fire and happiness during the match with Inarizaki; that was commendous, because it helped his teammates reawaken their hunger for the game too. Season 4 was simply blinding in terms of its shining character developments.

Both are equally important in my opinion in this relationship, neither more important than the other... I don't agree Kageyama just give orders and no one questions him, in my opinion it's the opposite he has been so mellowed and just follows what others tell him to do what Suga tells him, what Ukai tells him, what Oikawa tells him and just follows them because he know when he was incharge nothing worked out he was left alone. And no one told Hinata he is useless it is a real thing that Kageyama, Ukai and Suga tells him that he cannot hit the ball because of its speed, it's just not humanly possible. And because they are all setters they don't know that there are some spikers who can see things in slow motion. But even if Hinata can see things in slow motion still it will never be possible for him to hit Kageyama's current sets because of which he develops the "set that stops" that finally Hinata can fight midair with his eyes closed. And once again Kageyama does as is asked of him. It is the first time that Kageyama refused any demand from Hinata or others since the very beginning because he knows it won't work out and this will affect the team's performance in the next tournament which shows such great development on his end to think about the team first. I think he sees his younger self in Hinata who is being selfish and not thinking about the team which terrifies and frustrates him. You are entitled to your opinion but I think because its Hinata everyone takes his side... If it would have been Kageyama everyone would have been like look at him reverting or whatever... Like I like them both and I'm not hating on Hinata in any way but calling Kageyama as the useless one when he carried the whole team on his shoulders the entirety of the first season is just ridiculous. I'll just concluded as I stated at first they both are equally important in the dynamic constantly bringing the best in each other, they both challenge the other and makes the other better, when one feels down the other lifts him up. Calling Hinata not being useless without Kageyama and calling Kageyama useless is the most absurd thing I've heard... The dude literally coached the guy from day one, made him realise how important his role is, gave him freedom to jump wherever he wants because the ball will come to him.

5:30 Fascinating : Kageyama HAD skills and UNLOCKED potential that were TOO SUPERIOR to those of his teammates, so was his intensity, so they couldn't keep up, there was NO CONNECTION/COMPATIBILITY between him and those teammates that Kageyama could USE TO INFLUENCE THEIR ACTIONS, and so he couldn't turn his team FROM A LOSING team to a WINNING team by changing in any which way that he could with that connection and that the situation demanded, like by making it able to coordinate, as a separated and complicated organism, to redirect the ball into the field and make a point While Hinata had LITTLE TO NO skills and PRACTICALLY LOCKED potential that made him EQUAL to his teammates and INFERIOR to the enemy's team; the CONNECTION I was talking about also has to do with the skills and potential of the enemy; if there's a compatibility between your skills and those of the enemy like "having high reflexes" in relation to "the enemy is fast", then there's a connection made that can ultimately connect to the rest of your team, even more so if your connection with your team has the skill that you "can be well understood by your teammates on a dime, by, like, having a varied set of clear hand signs", and therefore you can make(manipulate) your team more easily to react to the communication from the CONNECTIONS with the enemy; therefore, if you're INFERIOR to the enemy, there is no strong enough CONNECTIONS for you to react quickly enough to the enemy in order to optimise a counter to their forces *They have their own differences that can be easily worded to be completely antipodal to one another, but you can also make them arrive to the SAME conclusion : Their inability to make sufficient CONNECTIONS with THEIR team and THE ENEMY'S*

I think it was not only hinata that brought out kageyama's best but the WHOLE karasuno were (well hinata was the most important part of course). when kageyama went back to being the KING once again, instead of getting offended and leaving him like how team kitagawa daichi did, they accepted him, believed in him, trusted him and followed his orders because they believed that what he demands is the best for the time. Kageyama was really lucky for founding such a team and such a partner that made him one of the best and most terrifying setters in the whole world. also (manga spoilers) Miya atsumo said that too in their last game. he blamed hinata and the whole karasuno for bringing out this perfect terrifying KING out of the Goody two shoes little setter he was before...

I think you are bang on, Hinata has always been my fave, but jags is a close second. But I would say one thing, raw as he was, Hinatas potential became obvious because of kags, I think it worth noting, that without their relationship, which improved both of them, kageyama might always have hit the communication wall, and never been all he could be, and Hinata might just have just become like Washijo, the old , and also small, coach of Shiratorizawa. Washijo, had all of hinatas drive and passion, but never had the chance to shine above the prejudice about his height, which ultimately defeated him as a player.

i really liked most of your points!! the only thing that id point out is that in the whole s2 arc where hinata wants to spike differently, id say that it’s not completely kageyama still having dictator/demanding habits (although it is part of it), but also kageyama having learned from his mistakes of pushing his teammates to change their playing style to “catch up” to him. from Kageyama’s point of view, hinata is selfish in the sense that their plays revolve around hinata being a decoy, and his confession of wanting to change and potentially ruin the team’s playing style for the sake of his own pride to prove he’s a strong player reads a bunch of red traumatic flags in kag’s book (when in reality, hinata just wants to improve)
