Gintama is one of the peak series of Shounen with one of the most insane mangaka in generations, along with Oda Eiichiro. If anyone attempted to write the way he did these days, it probably wouldn't achieve the same results. And Kagura's fight scene is but one of the many proofs of that.

Gintama knew how to do one thing contrary to other shonens when characters are in danger we feel real stakes because we have with the characters through mostly peaceful and enjoyable times and it’s just gut wrenching when the suffer for real but also so satisfying knowing how goofy they use to be

Which is incredibly cool when you consider that it's an episodic anime so you KNOW the stakes aren't too high bc the characters aren't gonna die off but it still FEELS that way. Then when you finally think "ok I'm no longer fooled, no meaningful change is gonna happen," farewell shisengumi comes and wrecks you. This anime is top 2 and it's not 2.
