I used to fish for kahawai off Wainui Beach in the 80s. Fly-rod, 7lb line, no trace, little centre-spool reel, home made lure, three inch length of steel pipe shined up and a few swivels. You could see 'em in the breaking waves chasing the lure as the sunset behind the surf. I'm living back in London now, from England originally. Cant tell you how much I miss NZ. Thx for the vid.

A great video, and may I say, a refreshing change to see a left hander on the reel!

Haha I use 5-10kg rod for my kahawai and I won a pink kids thin 1-2kg rod and its unbelievable when you wind in kahawai on it. I hooked a 5kg kahawai, took my 18 mins to wind in. Im from Taranaki, Nth Is. NZ

Hey. Awesome video. Quick question, what are your thoughts on flattening or filing the barb on hooks? I understand it vastly reduces mortality in releases fish.

Totally for it, this should become common practice.

The kahwai would throw the hooks easy. With the way they jump

a rod size 7.8 will be ok or i need something around 8.6?

Hahaha, I love the camera operators ( Nina) warm greeting to the Kahawai at 8;55 ..... ' Hello'. That must have made it a very enjoyable experience for the fish. Great clip, thanks for sharing your experience with us Malcolm. What line weight was the rod ?

Nice video, but the scissors around the neck is a silly idea. Forget the life jacket, that won't save you if you fall and scissors go into you.

awesome video but those hanging scissors 'round your neck are so dangerous... if you fall forward and the things are facing up when you land that could be really dangerous
