I love how in Japan, even if this (and many other shows) in all intents and purposes, a kid's show, they did not hold back in having scenes with drinking, smoking, gambling, a lady in a Playboy Bunny type suit, fist fights against teammates, and death by being stabbed by a purse snatcher. Jetman is really a great series.

18:00 - The point where Tran becomes the adult Tranza marks a tonal shift for the show too. The villains stop competing to defeat the Jetmen and instead have to work together to stop him, and the Jetmen have a villain that is just badass, easily able to outfight the team. They are defeated in every major encounter with him, up until the last one (Ryu manages to damage him a bit in one fight, but if the fight had kept going, Tranza would probably have still won out). Don't you know Kaiju? Saban along with Shuki Levy collaborated with Jean Chalopin and Andy Heyward of the now-defunct DiC Entertainment on that respected series. Actually, Alpha 5's (and 6 when the Hip-Hop personality is deleted) famous catchphrase has its origins in Kidd Video. Ay-Ay-Ay was the catchphrase of Kidd Video's drummer Carla who was portrayed/voiced by Gabrielle Bennett. Bennett in real life did not have the drumming skill. Lesser known fact Power Ranger/Super Sentai fans. Saban and Levy also wrote the songs; "Video To Radio (Kidd Video theme);" "Come Back To Me;" "You Better Run;" and "Easy Love." "A Little TLC" was co-written by Terry Britten (also co-wrote Tina Turner's smash "What's Love Got To Do With It?"), Elton John's longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, co-wrote "When The Phone Stops Ringing," Kidd Video covered the Motown smash "Where Did Our Love Go" and Kidd Video himself aka Bryan Scott wrote the song "Time."

I've seen and heard people suggest Carranger should have been skipped in favour of adapting Jetman as it has a more serious tone. Having now watched Jetman in its entirety, I can safely say I can see their point, when they're not fighting noodles, vacuum cleaners, walking piles of garbage or tomato headed monsters. As for Jetman as a Sentai, this is a huge breath of fresh air compared to the three or four seasons preceding it which, while each had their moments, started to feel like a stale routine. The writing is complex and nuanced, with the team learning to become a team rather than simply getting on with each other from the very beginning. Jet Icarus and Jet Garuda combining is friggin' epic, with the high-five / fist bump before they reconfigure into one colossal mech. All of the rangers undergo some level of character development, which is a big plus, particularly Gai who goes from a creepy lone wolf to someone who values and respects his team-mates. His appearance in Gokaiger 20 years later is confirmation of this. I could have done without him admitting his attraction to the girl in the vacuum cleaner episode, but I guess this is a culture thing. Ako I think has the least development of the five, but she does rise from a selfish schoolkid to a young woman with a strong sense of responsibility. I felt for Raita when he had a chance to live in the stone age with a woman who loves him, people who worship him and a society which strongly depends on the agriculture he loves so much, but he gives it all up to save the earth. Sacrifices don't come more heroic than that. Kaori grows from being something of a spoiled princess to a brave warrior, giving up on Ryu's love when she realises how much Gai's been sacrificing himself for her, but ultimately realising Gai's not the right guy for her and comforting Ryu in his hour of need. Ryu tips the balance for me when it comes to Jetman being my favourite season. Not for his iron-clad will or morals, but for his humanity when he falls into depression for losing Rie. Right from ToQger was my previous high-standard for this, though his own struggle with darkness was from contact with a darkness fuelled monster, while Ryu's is based and somewhat more realistic. I still hold ToQger in very high regard, but Jetman is my new favourite because of this. Ryu finds happiness while still being a hero, something which I can aspire towards. The tomato headed monster, easily one of the silliest monsters in all of tokusatsu, has to have the darkest and most brutal defeats in all of the 1000+ episodes of Sentai I've seen so far. I would strongly recommend this season for anyone wanting to start watching Sentai. I've already watched Zyuranger, so my next Sentai will be Dairanger.

This is an all time classic entry. It had great characterization and character arcs, the heroes and villains were fleshed out, and it didn't talk down to the audience. My fave episode involves the Ramen Noodle monster and that guy that had a crush on Ako, it's hilarious but also kinda creepy when he creates a ramen noodle named after her, and the jingle for the product is 'all day long I want to eat Ako Chan'.... Great googly moogly! I was on the floor laughing but also like 'wtf?' that's not creepy or suggestive at all! This is also my wife's fave Sentai, although she hated that Gai died such a pointless death. I understand why she feels that way. But I also understand the meaning behind why he died the way he did. The stabbing was something that could have easily been treated if he went to a hospital, but he was determined not to miss the wedding. He didn't say anything about his injury because he didn't want the focus to be on him, cuz it was his friends special day. Gai was being completely selfless after spending most of his life and much of the early parts of the show being rather selfish. Granted it is a.needlessly tragic end to his character arc, but a memorable one.
@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, at the end of the day, it showed that no matter how much growth he had, Gai was still as selfish as ever, just unintentionally selfish.

I have a fanmade DVD set based on the Toei discs, with the exact same encode and the subtitles from “Grownups in Spandex”. I’ll make a comparison with Shout! Factory’s release, but I can say for certain they won’t be using the exact files on the disc due to the stats. Shout! Uses 8 discs, and Toei has 10. That’s doesn’t instantly mean anything, as if there was unused space on the discs, it could be a 1:1 clone. Which isn’t the case. Toei used up almost all the space on their discs, leaving only a few hundred megabytes left unused. Video bitrates are very high for DVD. Bitrates around 8.7 mbps (with the max Bitrate of DVD being 9.9) on average. Audio is encoded as stereo, but it was produced in mono. This is because early DVD players had trouble playing mono tracks at higher bitrates. Audio quality is superb with very good range and compression being non-existent. Shout! will certainly have lower bitrates, but it depends on the compresionist (the guy who does the encoding). It could very possibly look better despite the space. what i like here is that unlike the 80s sentai, not all episodes end with mech battles and theres also a human side of it such as guy gambling and drinking, him and ryu fighting over kaori. in the 80s theres less of these scenes and its just battle, battle and battle which makes it boring and dragging as the series goes on
@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I loved how the 90s shows did not always have a mech battle every episode and some series even made the rangers earn their mechs.

I just finished it, I liked it. But I think at the end it kinda falls apart and they didn't really know how to wrap things up with some characters so they do it in a rush. The Vyram were the best.

I will say, I do think the epilogue portion was kind of odd, but it was something Sentai hadn't done before at the time, so I give it a lot of leeway for that.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork It was a bit jarring. With what happen with Ryuu, Kaori and Gai, Kaori gives Ryuu a pep talk and then all of a sudden THAT happens lol. God I love this show growing up alongside MMPR thru CDs. Gai is basically the Tommy of this but at least he did have a reason for his seclusion to the team. Also,about the if the whole team is needed and then the auto-pilot thing was brought up,my guess is that the transformation data was saved into the machines when they were first brought up together. Same thing happened with MMPR with the Green Ranger in Green with Evil Pt.2. Lol,there were some things both shows were similar to me that I didn't even notice. ^_^ So yeah,must have been a back-up plan if one person in the team were to be vaporized or retired,this feature would be brought up but then again,it wouldn't bring the Jet Icarus or anything else up to full power. There were times that the Jet Icarus and other mechs were controlled with one or 4 rangers but it's not enough to put the monster down. Demon God Veronica is one instance. Also,Pumpkin Rapper is an idiot.

I hope that's an upper 4 stars, coz man I could've given this show 6. I watched this as a kid since it was aired here in our country back in the 90's. Even some adults here watched it because of the love triangle aspect. Gai is my most favorite character in all of sentai. He's so bad ass, he even beat God in a game of poker. I'm glad he was the one who guest starred in Jetman episode of Gokaiger. Also, what happened to him by the end of this show is really tragic. Just when he's finally done being a loner and finally accepted other people in his life....Ah I wouldn't spoil it for the ones who have yet to see it. But yeah that ending cemented him as the most Badass Ranger. Also, I dunno if it is an easter egg of some sort but Ryu from Street Fighter morphs into Red Hawk Ranger in the Recent MMPR fighting game. Not the same as Red Hawk Jetman, but I thought it was a neat correlation since they are both named Ryu.
