19:46 I’m a Visalia native and there was a Psychology Professor from the local college that was murdered by the Visalia ransacker. From what I know of from just articles and reports, the Professor’s daughter was attacked in the middle of the night and he had woken up and shielded his daughter but ended up dying later in the hospital. His daughter would have been the first victim of the golden state killer if her father didn’t sacrifice himself. RIP Professor Claude Snelling 🤍

Rip. My heart goes out to Mr. Snelling, what he did was beautiful and I will never forget him now. It's unfortunate that his life was cut short, but hopefully his memory lives on in his daughter and her offspring. This story reminds me that there is still true good in the world. He really thought he was going to be cut down, and inevitably did succumb to injury, but he was able to save and protect his daughter ❤🫂

The Golden State Killer was my neighbor! His granddaughter and my sister were friends! My dad (a probation officer in Sacramento) knew Joe and our neighbors that lived between our house and Joe's House were all familiar with Joe's.... off-ness. I remember that he kept his house rather dark and when we would play in the house and got too noisy, he'd shoo us elsewhere with a bit of a sneer, but he never actually threatened us. He even made us Spaghetti-O's for lunch when we were there during the day. He kept mostly to himself, but occasionally, he would chat with my dad and our before mentioned neighbors about lawn care, recipes, and old law enforcement stories. The neighborhood knew him as "Crazy Joe" because he'd talk to himself and sound like he was arguing with someone. We kids mostly hung around his granddaughter, and eventually, we moved from the neighborhood for other reasons. My dad would eventually move back to that same neighborhood years later, but in another part and those same neighbors were still living next to Crazy Joe. Turns out, hours before his arrest, they had been talking about a recipe. When Joe was arrested, he told the officers, as they cuffed him, "I have a roast in the oven." To which the officers replied, "We'll make sure to take it out." I remember the phone call my dad made to us kids when he told us that Crazy Joe was the Golden State Killer. It was mind-blowing but also made a lot of sense? It's funny how the only thing he truly treasured, besides his roast, was his family, and it was his family's DNA that brought to light his crimes. I remember we all tuned into the sentencing, and it just felt all too surreal. I pray for the families he impacted, and I'm so glad justice was rightfully served. He deserves every bit of time that he wastes away. I hope his family is okay, too. That can't be an easy thing to come to terms with. I just wanted to share my experience with this, but it's also kinda weird... cause my mom used to live 5 doors down from the Manson House in LA as well, and I find the coincidence just a little off-putting. God, I hope this doesn't run in the family, but you never know who your neighbors are. One day, you're swapping roast recipes and tips on how to trim roses, and the next, they're being cuffed for murder.
@Blue_CowCow

That's actually crazy that you knew him personally. I'm glad he didn't hurt you or your sister while you were friends with his granddaughter. I, too, pray for the families that he brought such anguish to, and hope that they finally find peace now that he's gone for good.

My moms baby sister was brutally murdered in 1986 in Trenton Michigan right before her 17th birthday. Today is the anniversary of her death, Rose Marie Zoldos. Its still considered a cold case to this day, no one has ever been tried for her murder. The man that did it walked away free due to the lack of resources in the small police department. DNA testing wasn't available yet. Hopefully one day her case gets the recognition she deserves. This marks 38 years since she was taken from this world too soon. We keep the neswpapers, death report, autopsy and court proceedings in a family photo album and her senior pictures still hang on the walls of my mother's house. My mom says I look like her and my middle name is Rose to commemorate her life 💜

Im so glad you covered the Golden State Killer. He's probably what really got me into true crime because it's insane how he first started with burglary and grew to murder. He taunted his victims even in local meetings the towns had when they were frustrated with this masked man. The amount of victims he claimed for both -drape- and mvrder is insane. I'm also so amazed with how much DNA in the crime world itself has evolved, and so many cold cases are now being solved due to past forensic evidence. I truly believe this killer could've gotten a whole 1 hour episode because this man had no limits, but I'm so grateful you covered this horrible guy's atrocious crimes and undoings

New Hampshire resident here, Bear Brook is very dense and the distance between the barrels was about a football field apart, according to the NHPR coverage. Not to mention murders like this don't happen very often in Allenstown, and the police force was both small and they were investigating a completely different murder at the same time. The reporter from NHPR covering the case did a little investigation of his own with another person. They wore neon yellow vests and each went to the location of a barrel; they couldn't see each other at all because of how dense it is. They couldn't even find each other by sight, they had to call out to find each other. Hope this clears up just how difficult it was to see/find the second barrel, and police were not completely at fault for this. Love these true crime videos, great work Kris!

@@kkharrisxoxo Yeah it's a massive park. Also if I remember correctly the other barrel was sealed "tighter" the other one did not off gas as much. Wicked weird and unusual for NH and nothing really close to this has happened since. Love the state park but it sucks cause every time you go it still feels bad walking through someone's final resting spot. Also you get some creeps. A lot of those Statey's that were on the case work with myself and hearing the investigation first hand was crazy.

It’s also very plausible the 2nd barrel wasn’t dumped until after the first was found when he felt like it was not going to be investigated anymore.

Good to know!! I didn't see that in any of my research! I do my very best to get all the facts right, but it's hard to get EVERY piece of info that's available, especially if it wasn't covered as much, which sadly it wasn't, but that's an interesting tidbit. Looking into it further now, she clearly didn't "solve" the case, but she absolutely kept it alive and had some very compelling theories that matched who the killer was. At the end of the day it was DNA that put him behind bars, but I definitely think her research was notable for the case and played a big role. Always love hearing more info! Thanks!

Michelle McNamara didn't solve the case, but she did shed a lot of public interest in the case. Many people in law enforcement solved the case. Arguably, the forensic tech from Ventura county who always doubled up on his collected samples is the real hero. VC had a pristine DNA sample just sitting in a freezer which allowed the genetic genealogy testing that led them to JJD.

Which is absolutely insane because you hear of some eye witnesses saying they see a man in full black creeping around in their yard and never call the police or alert anybody. I know it was different times but the amount of unlocked and just wide open doors and windows is insane to us today. Some of the most creepy details were him feeding dogs with treats over time so they would get used to him and not alert, and using empty cans (much like the plates) put behind doors so they would alert with sound if anyone disturbed him during a crime

I think it's generally normal to be interested by these things- there's a reason true crime podcasts are so popular- but i'm assuming you're really young, somewhere between 8-15 (dont say your actual age for security reasons) and your mum might just be trying to protect your innocence. Anyway, it would be awesome if you did get into forensics or criminal psychology because there are a lot of unsolved crimes out there that are just waiting to be solved by the fresh eyes of the next generation of detectives. Just don't forget to look for other options too

It's fascinating for people to understand how criminal minds work because it helps them anticipate and prepare for potential threats, enhancing their ability to protect themselves in similar situations. This instinctive curiosity is part of our evolutionary heritage, which historically helped us survive by understanding and outmaneuvering potential dangers.

Super scary that there are people like this out in the world. My golden state killer lived 6 houses down from my mother’s house when he was arrested. He lived there for years. And I had even talked to him a handful of times in passing. Not many words just casual hellos and how are yous. Gives me chills to think about. Very entertaining video!

I get that feeling. I used to live about 3 blocks from a serial r*pist/k*ller. Mark Goudeau is known as the Baseline r*pist. Later changed to Baseline k*ller. The part that pissed a lot of people in the neighborhood off was the fact that many of us had called the cops to let them know where he could be found. But they wouldn’t listen because he hadn’t targeted the area. As if it wasn’t possible that he may not live in the areas he hit. Even though one of his first victims was graped about 1.5 miles away.
